If your dishwasher actually washes dishes.....

And here I thought it was just me. My dishwasher and I are not on very good terms, and it is omly 1 1/2 years old. The dishes on the top are never clean, I constantly have to rewash glasses and it just all around drives me nuts.

our miele is great and very quiet. looong running time, though, at least it seems like it to me. I can't remember what my old dishwasher was.

Ours is a Kenmore, no idea what model, and I'm not sure exactly how old it is. This used to be DH's grandma's house, and it was here when I started dating now DH in 1995. It only takes about 45 minutes start to finish and isn't noisy. I dread the day we have to replace it.

I have the cheapest Bosch that Lowes had. Very happy with it. I think we bought it about a year ago.

I love our Bosch. Had three Kenmores before this and while they were OK, they were nowhere NEAR as good as the Bosch. It is so quiet that it has a light that projects on the floor so that you can tell when it's on. Seriously!

Plus my big dishes fit in it, where they never did in my other dishwashers.

Some plastic doesn't get completely dry, however, because it doesn't have a heating element - it uses the heat from the wash to dry the dishes. Upside - no melted crap in the dishwasher. It didn't bother me at all, but it might bother some.

We have a Whirlpool that came with our house. We used to hate it and now we are down to only disliking it. Main issue was the detergent since we have hard water. We have to use something called Magic Glass that goes just in the tub, detergent, and Jet Dry for each cycle. We have most things come out clean. A quarter of the time the whole load has to be rerun because it gets a white film on it. We are using the Finish Quantum tabs which seem to work.

Do you know which model Bosch you have.

Also, when you say your plastics aren't dry is it just plastics? I mean why do the glasses/dishes dry and not the plastics? I'm so confused...

GE Profile.....very quiet.
I use the combo tablets..........and add vinegar every couple of loads since we have very hard water. Keeps the dishwasher clean and helps with not having spotty dishes.

Never get a Samsung! I HATE mine! You have to hand wash before loading and it never gets things clean..especially the glasses..it shoots clumps of stuff in them ...its gross! I bought it about a year ago, so I'm stuck with it..

Miele. Similar to Bosch. Not cheap, but quite and good.

One thing I do notice is that my bottom rack plate rack has the plates spaced very close together if I use every space, and my dishes sometimes don't come out clean because I don't think the water can get in there. If I put the dishes every other space, no problem.

Before you throw it out the window, have you tried changing detergents? A lot od detergents have changed their formulations in the past couple of years. I've found only two that work - Electrosol powerball tablets and Cascade two-in-one (with the funky swirl).

btw - the dishwasher repair guy suggested my mom try the Electrosol ones before he went out to "fix" it when her washer wasn't cleaning. One tablet and everything came clean.

Agree. I use those brands.

subbing! mine is a real piece! it's awful, leaves a mess on the top rack stuff, doesn't wash, and its sooo freaking loud!!

loving the bosch reviews!

I have not read everything yet so if this was already mentioned, sorry, but I wanted to before I got sidetracked. Check and see where the water for your top sprayer is coming from, if it is like my ancient(12 plus y/old) kenmore, the water for the top actually sprays up from the bottom, so if any dishes are blocking the center hole for the bottom the water never gets to the top so the top rack doesn't get clean._To the original question, we moved in about 12 years ago and have not replaced the kenmore that was already in the house, its loud but it works. The cascade gel packs seem to work best, finish does not work at all.

Oh my Gosh, I was going to say the same thing. I love the Miele. It has a top pull drawer for the utensils which gets them super clean. It runs an incredibly long cycle and is silent - so I'm never quite sure when the cycle is done. :goodvibes

I second what a pp said about the detergent changes - along with that, the newer dishwashers have longer, more energy efficient wash cycles. My new Kitchen Aid's *quick cycle* is an hour long! Most dw's didn't wash quickly. Not sure how I like it, we're not in the house yet!

More things I found while researching:

The available cycles and options are decreasing - my 8 year old Whirlpool Gold $400 dishwasher has more bells and whistles than my new, $1k Kitchenaid!

Bring a place setting of dishes with you to the store - many have funky configurations - place settings don't sit well.

Some dishwashers have upper/lower wash only - great for small loads.

Many don't have the thing on the front so you can glance to see where you are in your cycle.

Hard/Soft food disposal - geesh, I can't remember which is *better*!!

We had a problem with dishes getting clean and I decided to try JetDry. It made all the difference. I hadn't been using any so stuff was just sticking to the dishes. Give it a try.

IA lot of the phosphate-free detergents don't work as well, but I have found that a lot of the 2-in 1 tablets with rinse aid do work a little better. I am currently using the electrasol tablets, and they work pretty well, but you STILL need to add jet dry in addition to what is included in the tablet.

I know that I am supposed to want to save the Earth, use Green things and be an Earthy Crunchy girl but I want Phosphates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would give up a lot of other things to get my phosphates back! :headache:

I will add to that. You can also try running a full cycle on an empty washer, and fill the detergent container with vinegar. Hard water can cause the jets to clog.

Tomorrows plan!

I have a GE Profile. I like it but do not love it.
