If your child (or you) breaks something in a store, do you offer to pay for the item?

I witnessed an incident today where a child broke something in a store. I was just wondering if you or your child breaks something do you normally offer to pay for the item?

Yes, once my son broke something and we took it up to the cashier to pay for it. She wouldn't let us pay for it though.

Most parents would when I worked in a furniture store (sold vases etc.). Those who didn't were considered very rude. We would never charge someone for an accident.

Always!

Wait, that makes it sound like they break things frequently.....

Of course I would. Fortunately, hasn't come up yet. But I'm sure it will at some point.

Yes, I would. Thank goodness and knock on wood it hasn't happened yet.

Absolutely - which is why we practice looking with our eyes and not our hands since when we look with our hands and we break it, then the money comes out of the piggy bank at home.

One time when DS was still stroller age we were Christmas shopping. He liked to pull the hood down on the stroller and "hide" we were in the store for awhile getting a package wrapped. We left and were crusing thru the mall when DS popped out from under the hood and lo and behold he had swiped a Christmas mug full of candy off the display (no wonder he was so quiet under that hood:lmao: ) we promptly took the sticky mug and remaining candy back to the store. We noticed all the wrappers on the floor and with a tremendous amount of embarrassment, we presented the culprit and the mug for payment, the store clerks found the whole thing so funny, that they handed it back to him and said "Merry Christmas"

I find, in retail ,most people do not.

Then the ones that do want it at a discount? I can make a profit on an item but now that you broke it i canmake nothing?

I witnessed one child at The Animal Kingdom who broke almost every rnament ion a tree at one of the stores. The mom did not say a word just picked up the boy and left. I pointed it out to the cm who then cleaned u the glass. She said people break stuff all the ime and walk out!

I always offer, but I have never had to.

Same here. I always offer and am ready to pay but I don't think the store has ever taken me up on the offer.

BTW I do this if I break something too. Children aren't the only clumsy ones.

DH and I were admiring a small redware jug. He picked it up and one part of it just fell off. He was standing holding the handle. You could hear the "ooooh" sound the people around us made. I could see them edging away from us. They were very nice about it and said it was okay. I bought one. Once in a while we laugh about it.

Yes, but the only things we've (mostly me!) broken were in a grocery store and they never let me pay.

Where I worked, about once a week or so we'd have a kid stomp his dirty feet or spill some sort of bodily fluid or liquid on an expensive garment and I never saw any parent offer any sort of compensation for it.

We had a child smash a 3' by 3' glass frame and not only did the parents not offer to pay, they left the store without even informing a member of staff - so there was 3' square of shattered glass on the floor until we noticed (luckily under 5 minutes). :sad2:

Of course! I wouldn't think twice about it... I should be watching my child better if he did break something, so I obviously have great culpability

My son broke a CD at a garage sale. It totally messed up my negotiating skills and I paid way too much for the pictures that hang in my kitchen. I also bought the CD.
