If Your Child Found $50 On the Ground...

This happened to my son a few years ago at the mall. We did turn it in, along with his name and our address... They held the money for 30 or 60 days & then mailed us the 20.00 after nobody claimed it... What should have happened is the money should have gone to the front desk, where I'm sure they have the same policy if it is not claimed...

I agree to call the place, tell them your DD found money, but not tell them how much. Ask if anyone came to them who had lost money. If not, it's hers, and there is no way I'd have her donate the money. Maybe donate a percentage of it, say 10% or so, but no more than that unless it's her idea.
I can't believe I'm going to say this but I agree with T&B :teeth: . Except, if no one claims it I wouldn't make her donate any to charity unless she wanted to.

:rotfl2: People are going to think we have this terrible feud! :teeth:

I put that in there about the % to charity because some people, according to their religion, donate a % of earned $ to charity. I wouldn't have my child, but it sure beats donating the whole amount. :)

She picked it up, she asked everyone in the immediate area if they had lost it and no one had. It could have been lying there for hours...you have no way of knowing.

If you really want to be a good person, call the ice rink and tell them you found some money, don't tell them the amount, and leave your phone #. Tell them if anyone calls saying they lost $$ to give them your phone #.

Frankly though, I think the fact that she asked people in the immediate vicinity if they had lost it is enough.

Let her keep it. There's no way to know who's it was. And since they asked in the immediate area. I think they did all that could be asked of them. If you would have turned it into the desk. Odds are someone there would have kept it.

:confused3 were you in St.Louis over the weekend?????? we were down there for a skating competiton........just wondered.......... dh found a ten out in the backyard yesterday......with all the wind it was stuck in a pile of leaves..... pixiedust:

My husband found $50 at a parking lot of a steakhouse restaurant and we called the restaurant later on the day to see if anyone called in to Lost Sometihng".

No one did so obviously we kept it.

Let her keep it.

I'd let her keep it. Your DH asked the people around him, I think that was enough. If I lost cash, I would never think to go ask if someone had turned it in because I'd figure whoever found it kept it, or the person it was turned into pocketed it.

My DS found a $100 bill at school. It was after awards and I knew that someone had just lost it. It was raining and the bill was dry. Make a long story short everyone in the office thought I was nuts making him turn it in. Turned out that is was a classmates Mom that had the money in her pocket and was going to pay a dentist bill .It fell out when she pulled out her keys. She was so thankful because they were going through hard times and really needed the money. She gave my DS a $20 reward. Made a big deal in his class and all. I think I would call and see if anyone reported lossing money, if not let her keep it.

I found some money on the floor of a shop a few months ago. I looked around to see if anyone had lost it but no one had. So I put it in a charity box later that day. I agree let her keep it, but suggest giving it to charity.

This happened to me at a Disney restaurant. I found a 50 dollar bill on the ground. What I did was, I went and told the manager that I found some money on the ground. I didn't say how much. I left my phone number with him and said that if anyone could tell me how much they lost, I'd return it.

Nobody ever called, so I spent the money after 3 or 4 days.

Ironically, the very next day at MGM I found $26 on the ground! I've never been that lucky since!!

similar happened to us, we found $100 again informed CM's but no one called us, but karma has a habit of biting you on the butt. we went to Busch gardens later that week and had one of our bags stolen (long story) and thankfully the thieves dumped the bag with our stuff intact in a trashcan and we were able to retrieve it with the help of the security team there, our loss was just cash totalling $170 . so we ended up $70 out of pocket but could have been so much worse as in that bag there were a couple of travellers cheques and our room keys for our diney hotel with charge facilities, so thankfully our thieves were not so bright and didn't realise what they had in their hands ....

I would let the front desk know that you found some money, give them your number if someone comes looking for it....if not, then let her keep it. I wouldn't give the desk any info as to how much it is etc. or what day you found it, that way you will know if someone is telling you the truth about loosing it.

My DD was playing around an ATM once in one of those kiddie places and all of a sudden out came all this money. We turned it into the establishment, but in hindsight we shouldn't have, they probably pocketed the money.

If you loose cash do you go to the desk looking for it? I don't...but I have turned in $1 bills I have found. I have turned in beautiful necklaces I have found at the supermarket...and I have been very happy to do so...if it were me...I would hope someone would do the same thing. THey did ask so I would agree to keep it (of donate a portion).

absolutely let her keep it. they asked the people in the immediate area - anything else would have just been handing a strangner (not the owner) $50.

I would have left a name and number with the desk. If anyone came looking for money, they could call & verify amount/bill. Just because you asked everyone in the immediate area, doesn't mean much. Afterall, you had just stepped away for a few moments, someone else could have too.

However, where you are at now is a different place. You could call and see if anyone had inquired & left their name and number. If not, I like the idea of giving it to charity.

Just my $0.02.

Unless you see the person drop it I don't see a problem with anybody keeping what they find.

I was once in line at a museum gift shop, and the person in front of me left their money. I saw who it was. The clerk saw the money, asked me if it was mine, then, when I said it wasn't mine, and belonged to the person who had just left, he took it and put it in his pocket. I tried to catch up to the person who actually had lost it, but, was too late after paying for my purchases. To this day, I wonder if I should have taken it and then tried to catch up to the person who lost it, because I am pretty sure the clerk didn't.

Let her keep it! There is no way someone else in the dynamic wouldn't have taken it themselves if you turned it in. Your daughter picked it up, inquired around her, it's now hers. pixiedust:

Exactly! I've lost money in the past. It would never occur to me to go up to some desk & say I lost some money - unless I'm interested in being laughed at. :lmao:  And it would never occur to me that if I lost CASH that someone would turn it in. It's finders keepers. I'd just hope it went to a nice person & would be used wisely or for something fun or needed, just not for drugs or booze.

Now, if I lost a wallet that could be identified in some way, then yes, I would in that instance go to the desk. But I wouldn't expect to find any money left in the wallet. (Maybe because that actually did happen once.) I need my ID & credit cards more & would hope someone would turn those in, even if they took the cash.

I actually found a wallet in the back of a NYC cab once. Instead of giving it to the cab driver, who I thought might pocket the cash & toss the wallet in the nearest trash, I tracked down the owner by phone. He was nearly crying that all his ID was intact. He was in shock that all his money was left in it. I never did meet him, I just left the wallet, in a well-concealed envelope, for him with my doorman, to pick up that afternoon at his convenience. Besides just hearing those tears in his voice, the few times I've found cash on the sidewalk, I feel have been my reward. :cheer2:

Another time, I found a very expensive cellphone someone dropped on the city bus. Since I didn't think of how I could return the phone (til after I got off the bus, ) I left the phone on the bus. I wish I hadn't. When I left the bus, I saw another man eyeing the phone with $$ in his eyes. I'm sure he eBayed or sold the phone. Once I got off the bus, I realized the owner might just call up his cellphone & hope someone would answer it & return it to him.:(
