Would you?

Is Photography your Passion, obsession, or just another hobby?

If you had enough money to live comfortably, would you quit your job and concentrate solely on Photography?

I did it as a living for 7 years and now I do something else. I have yet to get a DSLR (will get the Canon 40D in May) and I am thinking I am not as good as most amatures on this board. I have seen such talent here. Most of the people I admire here don't have practically any formal training but they surpass me in so many ways...I chalk it up to PURE Passion.

Please let me know...Do you have training? or are you just SUPER Passionate about Photography? Do you mostly take your pics on Vacation or is it a year Long passion?

Which Photographers do you admire the most from the DIS?

I have SEVERAL..I am just in awe of so many here...You guys ROCK.

:surfweb:

Photography is a hobby for me.

If I won the lottery, I'd quit my job and setup a non-profit organization that put together web services for other non-profit organizations (schools, non-profit foundations, etc) and taught them how to run them themselves (teach a man to fish).

Incidentally, the guy in front of me in line at the mini-mart yesterday won $1k on one of those scratcher lottery tickets. I found it exciting, he obviously was excited, but everyone else in line was pissed off by it. (I think I was the only one not buying lottery tickets).

i don't gamble but hypothetically, i might not do it all day everyday but the the new Mark 111 & all those L IS lenses etc I'd buy would definitely get a work out:lmao:

Well you know what they say about the lottery....
It is a tax on the mathematically incompetent. Heheheheheee

If I won the lottery - you betchya I would be taking more photographs - *if* I had the time - even with all that money I would still be Mom.

I agree there is a lot of talent here - so many from here have taught me a lot and continue to be an inspiration.

Photography is definatly a passion of mine - one I wish I had more time for.

Doubt I would concentrate solely on photography, but I'd certainly buy a 1D or D3 and take it with me on all the world trips I'd be taking.. my new mansion would be well decorated with my photos ;)

I could I think but not all day everyday. I'd probably find enough extra stuff to do, at least for awhile. Eventually I'd get bored but I have a lot of charity ideas so who knows.

Yeah that. World touring and photos to remember it by. But I also don't play the lotto so the odds are against it ever happening, not that the odds are great anyway.

I'd quit my job, move to an island in the caribbean, take and print LOTS more pictures, visit WDW and DCL more, etc... Probably spend more time volunteering in a church or go on mission trips to help build housing/infastructure.

I'd just like to get a photo published. I'd especially like to see it on a common item, like a phonebook or something, maybe an MBTA bus, I don't know, just thinking out loud. ;)

It took me a long time to realize just how much I care about photography. I happened upon some photos I took 30 years ago with my very first camera...some kind of instamatic. The fact that I still have them told me that I should quick messing around and really put some effort into learning and improving. So what was a hobby is becoming a passion.

As for winning the lottery...like DVCJen said above, for me it's more about time than it is money. I'm still mom and photography takes a backseat to that. :) But still...I'd get better equipment. ;)

Is Oblio missing?
he hasn't posted for a while...hopefully he's just toying with us;) i know he posted on a couple other sites but don't remember under what name...hopefully he'll take pity on us and come back:)

Photography and writing. :lovestruc Other things, too.

That's the great thing about winning the lottery. You can do anything you want, whenever you want. :cloud9:

Absolutely Yes! I would be a fulltimer if I had that kind of cash...

I started in photography via passion, trained a little in college, practiced in the real world and am back to studying it in college...

Graphic Design, Entertainment Media, Model Photographer and Manager -

at this point, if I can find a real job as a photographer, I would be there in a heartbeat~

I take tons of photographs on vacation and now attend local events just to get another 250 or so shots on any given day. I love photography. It's my heart and my passion.

I admire all the photographers here on the DIS. Oblio and RTPHokie, Philagoofy and both Virgos. Any given week, the photo contest here showcases all that I admire here on this forum.

No way. I think that all day, every day, will quickly become boring, no matter what it is you do, at least it would for me. Remember that you need a hobby to give you something to do other that your normal everyday activities!

For me... well, first off, I never play the lottery because... well, I won't use my usual line, but the government gets enough money out of my normally without me volunteering more. But regardless... with unlimited funds, I'd be buying a small collection of cars (including a steamer - whoo!) and doing a lot of traveling. Take some rally driving classes. Maybe pick up a few more lenses, maybe a nice rangefinder and medium format camera... but not taking pictures all day every day.

There's just too many interesting things to do in this world. Life's too short - I'd like one lifetime doing what I have done (mostly settled down, married, kid(s), etc), and another of living off the land and traveling around the world, another where I more aggressively worked to make money in order to enjoy the "fine life", etc, etc. I go in and out of various passions, I'm sure that no matter how into photography I am, that my interest will diminish at some point and I won't use the cameras nearly so much... then later, it'll probably pick up again.

Don't sell yourself short - you have some pretty nice photos yourself!

I think I'd keep it solely as a hobby. And given my beautiful new house near the ocean and lots of traveling (with my lottery winnings ;) ) I imagine I'd have lots of photo ops too.

I love looking at everyone's photos here and there are times I'm in total AWE.

But the people I admire the most here are those who are willing to help others in their quest for information - over and over again! (And they generally do it so nicely.) If it weren't for those here who helped me so much - whether they knew it or not - I wouldn't have had the confidence to take my own skills as far as I have in the past year and a half. That, to me, is a great gift, because photography is something I've always wanted to learn. I never dreamed I'd do so on a Disney discussion board!

i will now give you my thoughts...

If I won enough $$$ to NEVER work again. I would become an ART photographer. I would not make it my job, but I would learn as much as I can and challenge myself to take better photos.

I started making a list of DISers that I would invite to Disney on my dime so I could learn from them...What resort do you all want to stay at???

I have leaned so much from all of you. I really admires your willingness to share your knowledge with us all.

I have been on a few Photo sites where people are so mean. Here, I can always find answers without the snarky remarks.

Thank you all...and BTW, here in Canada, when you win the lottery, YOU KEEP IT ALL...the government gets none of it. So if you win 37 million, you get 37 millions in a lump sum...Now that would be fun. Anyone up for a visit to the Canon Factory????;)

If I won, I'd keep basically the same job I have now. The only difference is that I'd insist on a staff position instead of managing. I enjoy what I do. It helps the world. It sets a good example for my kids.

As for photography, I'd buy some additional lenses and keep more current with new bodies, but not much else would change.

I don't buy lottery tickets, but my stepdad does.

Photography already is my job. If I didn't need to be earning money, I'd still work. I'd limit myself to a max of 15 weddings a year though, and I'd be very very specific in my target market. I'd hire employees though - mainly someone to do bookkeeping, and someone to upload and manage client galleries and orders. I enjoy the shooting, creative editing (I'd outsource the basic editing), and album design.

With the rest of my time, we'd do a lot of travel, and I would take a lot of pictures.
