and your essay wasn't being considered for reasons that had nothing to do with the work itself, would you want to know? or would you prefer to be told that your work was considered, but someone else won?
the 5th graders were asked to write essays for their DARE graduation. one essay from each class was selected, and the winner had the honor of reading her essay at the DARE graduation. she was very pleased and honored to have been chosen.
a few days later, each 5th grader was asked to write an essay about their school experiences, and one essay from each 5th grade class will be read at their upcoming graduation. before she even began to write it, my dd told me "I know my essay isn't going to be chosen because I got to read my DARE essay." but she wrote her essay anyhow, and did a beautiful job.
the teacher wrote a short note on the essay, telling dd that it was a wonderful essay, but that in all fairness the teacher would have to select someone else's essay., that someone else
while dd is happy for the girl whose essay was chosen, she can't help but feel disappointed.
if you were in dd's position, would you prefer to be told "I can't consider your essay" or would you prefer to think you eassay was read and considered but someone else's was chosen instead.
