Actually, I shop in Hudson NH/Nashua NH, so I choose among MB, Hannaford, Shaws, and Stop and Shop.
My take is, if I'm looking for just a few general things.... for example, some fruit, soda, and ice cream, I find that Shaws usually has the best price because of their great sales. I find that MB is usually the most expensive when it comes to name brand non perishable items. For example, Coca-Cola has a reg price of $4.44 at Shaws and $5 at MB in my area. MB hasn't had Coke products on sale for under $4 in the past few months, whereas Shaws has went as low as $2.50. Also lowest Hood goes at MB for ice cream is $2.50 in the past few months; last week Hood was $1.99 at Shaws plus there was a $1 off 2 store coupon to make it $1.49.
But I do agree that many of the regular prices are expensive at Shaws. I do see that Stop and Shop is much better in Hudson NH. Stop and Shop prices a lot lower in NH stores than any of their other stores, plus they have a program where you can get a $10 certificate for spending $200 at my store (you don't have to do it all at once). So, in the end, the price all evens out in the long run if you just amortize that and view it as a 5% discount on everything bought. Maybe a couple dollars more spent at either store is the difference. But the difference that counts is that S&S service is way better than MB service, especially at deli and checkout, and that S&S gives you the item free if they overcharge you (I've gotten free clementines, free Tostitos, etc.); another thing that MB doesn't do and another thing to keep in mind when thinking about pricing differences. Sure I think there is certain instances where you'd do better at one than thte other, such as an order with large amount of deli products is cheaper at MB; an order of a lot of health and beauty care is cheaper at S&S, especially when you talk about the price of Dove Soap at MB (ouch!). Last time I checked a couple months ago it is $3.49 for 2 bars! Vs, I stocked up on a sale a couple months ago at shaws when they had it at $4.99 for 6 bars - $1.00 store coupon = $3.99 for 6; haven't seen that price in ages! This means I paid $.50 more to get 4 bars!
Plus, if you can come up with a $/$$ off coupon to use at Stop and Shop, whether it would be there's or a competitor's as they do accept competitors' $/$$ coupons, I can guarantee that Stop and Shop is then cheaper than MB.
So, I really think the more for your dollar theme is false in Hudson/Nashua NH.
Though, I do have to agree, I've been in Chelmsford S&S a few times and MB is better in Chelmsford.
Also, even if you're not lucky to be around Hudson NH S&S like I am, you can still do better at wholesale clubs and Trader Joe's. There's many prices that are lower at wholesale clubs that MB definitely does not beat. I go to BJs at times and I think BJs is at least 10-20% savings over MB. I went there to pick up some bottled water a few months ago and it was $4.49 for 35 bottles of Nestle water; so that's equivalent of a little over $3 on a 24 pack, which is hard pressed to beat. Also, regular price of 24 pack of Coca Cola is $6.29, so that's definitely lower than any other store's reg price and beats any time that MB has put Coca Cola on sale.
