Whose responsibility is it to hire and pay for an exterminator to come and get rid of it?

We live in a home owned by someone else, and pay them rent every month. They refuse to do anything about the dreadful skunk smell that has been present in the house for the past week. They keep telling us, if we don't like it, hire an exterminator and pay for it.

Shouldn't that be a landlord's responsibility?

You might have a dead skunk...gack, I don't know. Yeah, I would think it's the landlord's responsibility, but I'd rather be able to sleep and exist than live in a gassed environment that makes me nauseous.

Your landlord sounds like a tool. Sorry about that :sad2: .

agnes!

Awww....I would hire an exterminator and deduct the amount from your next month's rent! That is how I would do it ;) That'll teach him!

Unless it's in your rental agreement, your responsible.

Wow what jerks!

Well I suppose I would hire an exterminator and move when my lease is up, for sure.

You can try calling the board of health.. a skunk dead or alive is a rabies threat. but then you might not have a place to live..( meaning the owners might kick you out)

if you want to stay there I would check it out safetly.. If it a dead one, remove it yourself. It is is alive then put a radio where it is living... they dont like noise and will move somewhere else...

Also is it a sprayed smell, or a oily musky( you can taste smell) if it is an oily smell then chances are the skunk is still there.. if it a sprayed smell maybe something just got sprayed...

We had a rabid skunk ended up in our yard. It fell in a hole that we were digging for a water line. No one would come out and kill it without charging us $500. The police told us to shoot it but also told us since we were so many feet from a school zone it was illegal to use a firearm...thankfully the thing died and we we called the board of health and asked what to do with it...the first guy we talked to told us to bury it but when I said that chances are that something would dig it up and could get rabies. he said to through it in the trash...I called someone from the state and they came and picked it up....

Unless the oil from the skunk is actually IN your apartment, the smell should dissipate soon.
We were the unfortunate recipients of a skunk spray on both our dogs about 2 weeks ago.
The smell was horrible for about 10 days, now you can not smell it at all (spray was outside ON both dogs :scared1: )

You can still smell it on both dogs, right between their eyes, if you get right in their faces and take a good sniff.

It is awful. I hope we never have to deal with it again

I would hire someone to catch the skunk and let it go by the landlords house..

I would call animal control to come out. If you are charged, give them the address of your landlord so they can send them the bill.

What does your lease say about exterminators?

I was just going to ask the same thing. This is something I just learned....who knew???

Maybe it depends where you live. :confused3 I live in NYC. The landlords here are responsible for hiring and paying exterminators.

:rotfl2: LOL thats what I was going to say to that was the first thought that went through my mind when I read the title. If it is smelling that strong then that has to be some good pot, not that I would know or anything:rolleyes1 The skunkier the better
