If you know you don' t like the topic

The original poster said WHY POST TO THINGS THAT DON'T INTEREST YOU????

I was saying when Dan posts to the Survivor threads that its CUTE and HARMLESS and it makes some people laugh so that would be why he would post to something that doesn't interest him.

Unlike others......who will post to ANYTHING they can to cause trouble, hurt feelings and controversy which is stupid and blatantly IGNORANT!

You find them cute and harmless, but the reality is that they have the same value to the actual topic as the things you see as thread craps. As usual, it's all about each individual perspective.

Obviously the solution is for each thread starter to be able to list the people they would like to be able to respond. :smooth:

:p and  Simultaneously a funny and frightening idea.

You probably know Dan's intentions better than I. However when I see repeated posts from someone saying how TV is such a waste of time and reality TV is the worst thing in the world and then I see smilies, etc. on a reality thread, I take it to mean "you are all idiots for watching this and I'm taking note of who posts here." Just my feelings on the subject.

No I think they have value to the topic, they are there to make people laugh.

You could say the same of some of Jason's little one liners....the threads wouldn't be the same without them but he means them to make people laugh, which they do.

As long as its in good nature (and NOT on a debate thread because thats where all the controversy belongs) then it shouldn't matter what is posted.

Its when people post hateful and hurtful things or baiting threads, thats when it gets out of hand. It is absolutly beyond me why people try to hurt others. For what purpose??? Just to say Ha ha I got them good????? Its silly and its stupid and childish. Especially when the people that get baited have done absolutly NOTHING to deserve it. I can pick out 3 threads right now that are based souly on baiting and trying to hurt someone else.

Yep your darned right I'm better than that!!!!!

But it won't change anything.

Hummm I never got that Dan was saying we were stupid. Everyone has guilty pleasures. Heck I watch wrestling and it doesn't get much sillier than that. I like silly shows as do many others but I have never felt anyone called me stupid because I like The Bachelor.

Just posted on a TV thread...for those who care, please take note.;)

I HATE THOSE SHOWS! :p *snerk*

But seriously, Beauty sums it up for me the best I think when she says:

I'm seeing a bit of the "ha ha I got them good" today and it's so disheartening.

Whew, sorry......pretty sure this went off topic at some point, eh?

Just asking an honest question. It sure does appear from your posts that people are not completely free to post on any thread. And since I am relatively new to the CB, I would really appreciate knowing the ground rules for posting here, such as when is my opinion allowed or not allowed. If I don't watch a TV show or don't like some sport or game or whatever, am I allowed to say that or is that forbidden?

BTW, if you don't like what some people write, including me, you have 2 options (like you don't already know) -- use Ignore or report it to a mod.

Steve,
I'm sure you know that you are "allowed" to say that you don't like a show. I guess my question for you would be: If you don't like baseball, don't know a thing about baseball, don't know WHAT a baseball is and there is a thread that is titled "Who's Gonna Win the World Series?", would you go to that thread and post a reply to it such as: "I don't like baseball and why would you waste your time watching the World Series?". If you would do this, why?

Actually, Steve, I think that "whatever Steve" was meant for me. :) :)

It's in the description of the board on the main page: Join our moderators in a discussion forum for any topic, Disney or otherwise. Swap stories, information, ask questions...just be friendly :)

Everyone is allowed to post whatever they wish, within guidelines of course, including the OP. No one ever said "don't post your opinion". she asked a legitimate question. I don't open threads I have no interest in, but when they're reported I HAVE to, which sometimes depresses me.

It takes a certain modicum of restraint and maturity to know whether or not to respond, and a complete understanding of just what you are trying to say. If your intention is to hurt or condescend, that's your option, but I wonder sometimes if you care how it makes you look. If you don't care, fine, but the attitude that it gave you the upper hand.... not really.

I have been through ALL of the attitudes on this board at one time in my life so I understand them. What I wish is that everyone would allow everyone to live and let live. It is not our job to change a person's life or mind with our judgments, we have no idea what they have lived through in their lives.

Christine, personally if I don't care about a topic on a thread, I usually don't bother opening it. If there was a topic on "Who'll win the World Series", I'd probably skip it 'cause I couldn't care less.

However, I would never deny someone the "right" to open the thread and add their comments, including something like "I hate baseball and won't watch and don't care who wins."

If you start a thread, it's open season for anyone to post to it. The OP cannot and should not be able to control who posts or what is said -- as long as the posts remain within the DISBoard guidelines. Of course, the OP can exercise the ultimate in childish behavior (JMO) and demand the thread be closed by a mod ( :sad2: ) because it didn't go the way they wanted it to go.

I just think it's absurd for some to think that everyone who posts on the DISBoards lives on a steady diet of {{HUGS}} and pixie dust. If an individual's posts bother you that much, use the Ignore feature.

Eeyore, I think you're missing the whole point of my original question.

Steve,
I agree with you totally on this and I am NOT a big fan of pixie dust (and I have gotten my fair share of flames on this board--but I asked for it). BUT, I just felt that you were misinterpreting the OP on this thread. She/he just seemed to want to know WHY some people felt it necessary to reply to a post with something negative when the person had no interest or connection to the original question. The person who gave the Subway example was right on. Why would you post to a "What Do You Put On Your Subway Sandwich" with "I don't like Subway." I mean, let's face it, it really wasn't vicious or mean, it's just stupid. The question wasn't about whether you liked Subway or not! It really does appear that people are trying to get their post counts up.

On the other hand, I'm not in favor of censorship and I sorely miss the Debate Board, so I just let these posts go and roll my eyes. I just tend to think the OP here is doing the same thing and not really asking for censorship of negative posts.

Believe what you will. I don't seek the "why open a thread and post a useless remark" a legitimate question; it's just a "dig" at people who offer a dissenting opinion that may not be coated in a ton of multi-colored pixie dust. And this thread goes on from there in the line of "if you don't have something nice to say, if you don't agree with the OP, if you can't post funny smilies ... don't post. Of course, no one would dare say that explicitly. But the message is there. JMO -- if I'm allowed that.

Too often people will read more into something written on an Internet message board than what is there. Happens all the time. We tend to project feelings and attitudes on posts that the writer may have never had or intended. I wonder whose problem that is.

I believe in the same things, but I also think when you start a thread you are offering an invitation for anyone & everyone to participate. Once extended, it's rather rude to start declaring who can and who cannot participate and what can or cannot be said, as long as posters remain within the DISBoard guidelines. Again, JMO.

What part of "If you know you don' t like the topic, then why open the thread and add a useless remark?
That's something I really don't understand sometimes." am I missing?

What gives anyone the right to determine what remarks are "useful" or "useless"? You start a thread, you invite responses. Reality is you may not like every response you get. You may not agree with every response. That's the way life works.

But isn't saying "I don't like it when a certain poster rains on my reality TV thread" offering an opinion, just like you are doing, eeyore1954? It may not be an opinion that you like, but certainly it should be allowed to be expressed, no? I don't like it when people rain all over threads either, and I have every right to express that opinion. I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to do it, just that I don't like it. Offering JMO, not laying ground rules.

ITA, snoopy, it's just an opinion. And it's JMO that it's just a "dig" at other posters.

Opinions are like belly buttons: everyone's got one and there are precious few in the world that are worth contemplating for extended periods of time. ;)
