If you have a breakfast bar, do you eat meals at it?

I'm not really sure what a breakfast bar is.

Growing up, we had a formal and informal dining table. We never, ever ate at the formal dining table (it had its own room too). It was always covered in mail.

Our informal (everyday) table was in a nook off the kitchen surrounded by windows and had skylights above it. We ate every meal there.

In our home now, we have a large island with the sink and dishwasher and it has 3 high stools. The kids eat there exclusively. I eat there for breakfast and lunch. My husband and I sit at the dining table for dinners. The table is right next to the island
We have a "great room" style downstairs.

What is a breakfast bar?

Don't have one anymore, but in our old house we remodeled the kitchen, took out the wall between the old kitchen & DR, put in a large island, and that is where we ate most of our meals (it's just the 2 of us now but we had 4 chairs). Only used the DR table for larger groups, it mostly collected mail and projects. In our new house I bought a higher kitchen table and we use the same bar chairs there.

DLgal, an island or peninsula with stools like you describe used to be referred to as a breakfast bar. I guess it's an outdated term?

Now people probably think of protein bars as the only breakfast bar.

When we bought this place 25 years ago, we specifically wanted a "breakfast bar." I'm always glad we have it, but I started this thread because it occurred to me that we rarely eat at it. We use our "formal dining room" space as a den and eat at the table in the informal dining space next that is open to the kitchen and family room that's big enough to fit even the expanded table. Three eating areas seems excessive to us since our house is just not that big! When we recently redecorated a bit, we went down to two stools at the bar from three.

It was the easiest way for me to give my kids breakfast, lunch and snacks when they were little but that was the only time we used it otherwise if was always just a nice big block of counter space for cooking. They are useful because it's quick to get plates in front of kids and then clean up.

@DLgal something like this this is what is usually meant by breakfast bar, grabbed the image off internet.

ooooooooooh o.k.-thank you for clarifying.

so i've got a big peninsula that's traditional counter height and we have 3 small stools (about the height of the arm on a sofa) that when seated on make for a dining spot that my kids used a bit when they were younger but for the most part it's the primary prep area in the kitchen b/c of it's proximity to the sink, dishwasher and most frequently accessed cabinets.

We don't have a breakfast bar, but a kitchen island. And we eat there often, especially for breakfast or a quick lunch. We generally eat at the kitchen table for dinner.

Not since having our son. We eat together at the dining room table... or couch some days ;)

We put IN an island when we renovated our kitchen. We use it all the time. We also use the table next to it, too.

That's just an island with stools. That's what we have.

Yes, an island or penisula with stools is what used to be called a breakfast bar.
