If you had the opportunity to photograph anything.....

I'll make mine a little more specific than 'African Safari' or 'Europe'...because as an avid photographer, I've thought about this for a very long time!

1. Mid-August, Mara River in the Masai-Mara of the Kenya/Tanzania border, at the narrows for the great wildebeest and zebra migration crossing. Tens of thousands of animals gather at the edge of the river, pumping themselves up for the necessary crossing to get to sources of water and grazing lands...while hundreds of massive crocodiles gather in the shallow waters to wait for the inevitable. It takes one brave soul among the wildebeests to jump into the water to start the avalanche of thousands of animals plunging in and swimming for the opposite bank, trying to avoid the massive jaws of the crocs. Life and death and the full circle, played out each and every day of the migration.

2. Venice, Italy, 5am in early November. I'd wake while the city is still dark and asleep...listening to the echoes bouncing through the channels of the city workers and early fishermen getting their morning start, and watch the early morning mist and fog burn off in the first dawn light, revealing still-empty streets, night lights not yet turned off, golden sunlight with long shadows, and that gorgeous city all mine for that moment in time as the buildings glint out of the mist and the light fog casts gothic shadows and reaching fingers of sunlight.

3. Lukla, Nepal, late April-early May - Having flown in from Kathmandu to this small town, I'd embark on the arduous but gorgeous 7-day trek through Namche Bazaar and the river routes and past the monasteries, following the yak caravans up the Khumbu glacier to base camp with the season's climbers. Then I could photograph the great Mt. Everest from the Southeast route, and document the climbers through the icefall and up the Western Cwm and Lhotse face.

Those three would make me very happy!

Wow! You have really put some thought into it! Beware tho- I hear Venice is prone to flooding in Nov. Pack some hip boots;) There is a picture in the boston.com best of 2008 of someone wakeboarding on St Mark's Square!
We were there in April '07- very cool city:)

I actually like the flood-prone season in Venice - it reduces the crowds and makes for some interesting captures. For me, it's much better than being there in the summer with 100,000 other tourists! And I like the cooler weather and fogginess.

Thanks for the link too...I had known about the flooding, but didn't see the wakeboarder before. :)

If I could photograph anything, it would probably be something like a self-portrait of me being paid billions of dollars for my cure for cancer that provides unlimited free power and inspires peace on earth. Yep, I'd like to photograph that.

As for more mundane stuff, it's hard to distinguish between what I'd like to photograph from what I'd like to see. I'd like to see the earth from space, the islands of Palau, a nuclear bomb exploding (from a safe distance), a volcano erupting spectacularly (another long telephoto shot), a jaguar in a jungle stalking it's prey, and too much other stuff to mention.

Getting even more mundane, the more generic stuff I'm interested in photographing that I haven't include ballerinas, colorful frogs, attractive nude females, and working factories.

Hawaii! I want to photograph the Islands, the Luaus, the Tikis, everything there entices me. Hopefully someday I'll be able to.

I would love the opportunity to shot from the sideline an Ohio State vs Michigan game in Columbus. Granted I would also need to borrow some faster glass, but I can dream.

Just hijacking the thread for a moment:

back on topic:
As I live in suburbia, with the rows of houses and occasional park/playground thrown in for good measure, and big midwestern big box stores all over the place... I would love spend some time in a real city with lights and glitz and ethnicity. New York City comes to mind, but I think I'd prefer something European...London, Paris, Rome. That would be cool.

Love the OT picture!!!

Living in a rural area I can understand that perfectly. My son lives in downtown Philly which is about a 2 hour drive for me. I love going to visit him and just walking from his apartment to take pics. He is within walking distance of all the historic sites you associate with Philadelphia but I like walking the little side streets between his apartment and those sites. There is something to photograph every where you look.

After moved into digital from film several years ago, I began taking my P-n-S to the golf course to photograph golf holes that I found pleasing to the eye...even if the hole wasn't friendly to my game.

It is a dream of mine to travel to Ireland to golf and to visit small, off-the-beaten-path, Irish pubs in the evening. And when I make that trip I will bring plenty of memory so I can photograph golf and life in Ireland.

Hmm... probably Tokyo DisneySea. From what I've seen in photos/video, that place is amazing!

But there's plenty of other places. I'd love to go back to Romania with an SLR (I took my then-new 2mp digital PnS.) I'd dying to do the Adventure by Disney Costa Rica vacation. I am going to try to get back to some national parks on our next California trip and it will be fun to have the DSLR for those.

A safari would be fun but IMHO not that photographically interesting. You're kind of stuck in the same vehicle as everyone else and you're kind of limited in what you can do.

How fast can you run? you could always volunteer to get out of the vehicle and make for some really interesting action shots for everyone else:rotfl: ;)

for me it is a personal reason for my dream photographing. I would like to get on board with a hospital to do bereavement photos for families whose babies who have passed or will not survive. A friend did them for us and it is a priceless gift.

I'd willingly go anywhere.
I've got to learn how to photograph something.

Back in my journalist days, I got to shoot from the sidelines at several Florida State football games. I'm telling you, that was a dream come true. There is no better place to see a game. And I even got into Sports illustrated -- not one of my photos, but a photo with me in it -- clear as day! :thumbsup2

My mom still has copies she has saved ... :lmao:

And I shot with a Nikon N6006 and an el cheapo Quantaray 70-210. Not the best setup, but I have photos I'll always treasure.

There is a long list of places and things I would love to photograph -- but if you told me I had to choose one subject, it would be Disney theme parks. I never get tired of it -- and if you opened it up to all the Disney parks around the world, it would be even better. But even if we're talking about Walt Disney World and nothing else, there is a lifetime of photo opportunities there alone.

Ansel had Yosemite. I've got Disney. :thumbsup2

a little ot
not sure if this is at other museums or not but fall of 07 the Vero Beach art museum had a photo and art exhibit of hospice patients, naturally most had passed away by the time the exhibit was up but even though it was very sad it was such a lovely way to remember someone, ie through photos and poems etc about them or sometimes poetry or art or photos they had done ...really great exhibit if you happen to see it around your area

Machu Picchu at dawn. Angel Falls in the mist. Every lighthouse in the world. All our national parks.

Fantasy: Classic F1 races of the 60's. Big steam climbing the Southern Loops. Our wedding (I know I could have done better than the WDW photographer).

More realistically: Alpenglow on Half Dome and waterfalls of Yosemite. Tidal pools at Monterey Bay. Trails and falls of Great Smoky Mountains and North Carolina. Monterey Historic races at Laguna Seca. WDW anytime!

China: Hong Kong and the mountains there.

Oh, I was looking at a bunch of my old photos the other day and wishing I could go back and retake many of them. My eye has improved a lot and so have my skills and equipment.

The last trip I took before leaving the travel industry was to Hong Kong and Bangkok. While I have some great photos, I know I could do so much better now. Especially with digital and no restrictions with rolls of film and developing them. There are so much of the details from there that I wish I could go back and do again.

I would like to go up to Doak for a game. I really miss the college football games up in Columbus. Funny story as I now have a old Quantaray 70-210 that I use on my D40. Picked it up from some guy here in Tampa for $5 on craigslist.

Well, I always say that a cheap lens takes much better photos than no lens at all!

And Doak is a great place to see a game, especially when the War Chant is rockin' the place. My brother and I had season tickets for about 15 years. Unfortunately, we had to let them go a couple of years ago for financial reasons. One day, I'll get them again. It looks to me like the program is on the upswing again. I don't know if we'll ever get back to being the incredibly dominating team we were during the '90s -- I don't know if that's possible for any team anymore -- but I think we'll become an elite team again.

Ever see a game at Raymond James? I've never been to any pro games, but I like the Bucs ...
