If you focus on what you left behind, you will never be able to see what lies ahead

Running with my closest 35,999 friends

Fast forwarding to race day. Our bodies were still on EST so we were up kinda early. We had breakfast at the QS restaurant at our hotel, the Luxor. Then we ventured down the strip to CVS to get Clif bars for our race fuel. I really don't know why we didn't bring them with us, I think I just ran out of time. While we were in CVS I decided I should get some water to hydrate and DH decided he would use beer. I guess even if it is 9am in Vegas it is 5 o'clock somewhere. On our way back to the Luxor we sat at the 5 cent slot machines in New York, New York and blew through $20. That was enough gambling for me. We had enough walking the day before so for the rest of the day we relaxed with shopping and napping in the most comfortable beds in our room.

This being a Rock n Roll race they had a concert before the start. This year the headliner was Snoop Dogg. We wanted to go but the concert was at like 3:30 and our start time was 5:30. Standing around more than we had to didn't sound appealing so we decided to skip it. Instead got ready at 3:30 and then headed out the door at 4.

ready to head out the door

The start was across the street from our hotel. It felt a lot like walking to a Disneyland race. We got to the start at 4:10. It was suppose to be cold by the time we were finishing so we bag checked jackets for the long walk back. They used UPS trucks so they could drive everything to the finish which was going to be in front of the Mirage. After gear check we kind of just wandered around. We took some pictures and had marathonfoto take our picture.

waiting with the Luxor in the background

Rock n Roll does their corrals way different than Disney. I was not a fan and I appreciate Disney's way much more now. There is no POT you just give your estimated finish time. They take that info and divide everyone into waves. There is blue, green and yellow waves. Within those waves they have numbered corrals. The corrals are just numbers on a pole that you try to stand near. A lot like a local race. Which does not work when there are so many people. We were in yellow, the last set of corrals.

At 4:30 the race started and then at 4:40 the yellow wave of corrals opened. We waited a minute and then walked over. There were just so many people. The announcer said the race had 36000 runners and you could definitely tell. We stood around until 5:20 and then they started walking us to the start line. It was a slow and kinda stressful walk. I thought they were going to stop each corral number and give them their own start but that was not the case. Corral 7 was our corral but somehow we kept getting pushed back and ended up behind 8. In the end it didn't matter, I just wish I would have known.

Congrats on the switch to Dopey!

That line up for the Vegas race looks crazy. I've heard the Rock n Roll races (and especially the Vegas one) are great. I'd love to do it one day, so really happy you are doing a race report on it!

GO TIME!

I had decided as soon as I signed up for this race that I would not be running it for time. The goal was going to be to have fun with DH since we don't get to run together as much as we would like to. As the race got closer I was kind of questioning why I had decided that because the course was flat, the weather was perfect and it was at night. It just seemed like a recipe for a PR. But Dopey is the A goal and that comes first. So I needed to stick to the plan. I turned off my just incase intervals on my watch and was just going to run it "blind."

The moment we all had been waiting for was finally upon us. The fireworks went off and the crowded started to inch forward. We crossed the start and passed by the Geico Gecko and were off. So many people were passing us. People were just insane at the start. I don't quite understand that because you seed yourself. I saw so many people hit the reflectors in the road and eat it because they were too anxious to pass people. One girl was being carried off the course at a 1/2 mile. It just seemed a little extreme with almost 13 miles left but I digress.

The course starts going south on Las Vegas Blvd. you past the sign and go about a 1/2 mile and then make a U turn. I told Mike we had to stop at the sign on the way by to get a picture.

This is the picture they took of us, there was no wait for a picture. I'm not sure if I want to buy it Marathonfoto is not cheap

This was our attempt at a sign selfie, we couldn't get the lighting quite right

Where the sign was it would have been easy to cut the course but they were on top of it with a bunch of timing mats after you left the sign. I was impressed that they took it that seriously. We passed the sign and made the U turn and started our way north on Las Vegas Blvd. I stopped real quick to take a picture from the course.

These pictures seem way darker than I remember.

As we ran by the Luxor they had a band playing Johnny Cash. It really helped set the mood for a great course. We settled into an easy pace and before we knew it we were at mile two. At this point the road was wide and the crowd had thinned out nicely. Then a random thing happened, DH and I were chit chatting about different things like portapotty lines etc when this girl about my age ran by us, looked me in the eyes and said you guys are doing great. Good job. I have no clue who she was or why she chose us. I mean I like encouragement but this seemed kind of like a pity compliment. Did I look like I was dying? or maybe that it was my first half. It still baffles me. LOL I didn't let it bother me for long and we pressed on.

As we approached the Planet hollywood area they had a Cher impersonator singing. She was really good, DH even asked me if she was the real Cher (I am surprised he even knew who Cher was LOL). We were passing the finish line and the course switched to the other side of the Blvd putting us right in front of Bally's and the Flamingo. I heard the announcer say that the leader of the marathon was about 3 miles from the finish and they expected him to cross in about 15 minutes. I am just in awe of how fast some people are so I always pay attention to the leaders.

We ran by the Venetian and I told Mike that the following night he would be there in the beautiful plush rooms. (not bitter at all that I had to go home and DH got to stay behind completely paid for :sad1:)

Here is another marathonfoto pic from near the
Venetian

The next band was not too far ahead this one was a KISS cover band rocking out in full make up. They weren't joking about it being the Rock n Roll Marathon there was plenty of Rock n Roll to go around. After we got past the Wynn, the Strip seemed to get darker. There weren't as many hotels. They did have an Elvis impersonator up on a stage who did not sing. He just kinda danced while a sound track played. Then we ran past the Stratosphere and into a dicer section of town. We noticed an ambulance was making it's way onto the course and looked up ahead. There was a runner down. It looked like she had stepped in a pot hole and took a nasty fall. I said a prayer for her and we kept on going. Being extra careful not to meet the same fate.

By this time we were in the wedding chapel district. So we played a game called try to remember which one we got married at. There were at least 10 that we passed and ours was one of the last. It was also right next to the Pawn Stars shop. We stopped for a selfie with the chapel sign.

Hard to believe it will be 12 years next month!

At about 8 miles the course took a turn off the strip onto some dark side streets. There they had a screen set up and were playing people's messages from the Toyota test drives at the expo. They also had flashing disco lights and a DJ. The side streets took up about 2 miles. We took a couple turns, passed another band and came out near Fremont St. There we turned back on Las Vegas blvd and headed back towards the finish. At that corner of Fremont street they had another band playing.

As we passed the point where we had turned off the strip earlier we noticed they had coned off the course and were no longer allowing runners to run those 2 miles. Instead they were redirecting them to where we were running. I guess this was their answer to sweeping. We also saw about 3 party buses that were coming down the otherside of the course, I guess they were for those that didn't want to finish.

We were still chugging along, slow and steady. I knew once we started heading back south it would go by fast and it did. Around mile 10ish Mike was starting to slack. I was trying to talk to him but he didn't seem to be in the mood. So I decided to separate, I started running faster but he wasn't having that. He wouldn't let me get away no matter how fast I ran. Once we started running faster it felt so good and I knew I wasn't going to back off. Passing all those people was also invigorating. At most halves at this point I am like why am I running, there is no way I am can run a marathon etc. but this day I thought I am ready for a marathon (ok maybe not ready right now but I will be)! At mile 12 I lost Mike. It got crowded at the end and there was a lot of weaving going on. I saw the Mirage in view and knew the finish was right there. I picked it up a little more and crossed the finish line as the Mirage volcano was going off in the background. I came across at 3:22:03. My slowest half marathon yet but also one of the best times I have ever had running.

I stopped a little ways down and waited for Mike. He was only a minute behind me. We made our way down the chute where we were handed our medals.

medal.jpg
It spins and glows in the dark!

Then they gave us bottles of water, sports bottles of gatorade, and drawstring backpacks of snacks from Geico. Trumoo was also handing out mini bottles of chocolate milk. The chute was pretty long like 1/2 mile. At the end was the UPS trucks where we grabbed our checked bag and put on our jackets and started our 2 mile hobble back to the hotel. All of the escalators for the pedestrian bridges on the strip were not working so it was a pretty painful walk back. We had originally wanted to eat at Grimaldi's pizza in the Venetian afterwards but the chute put us out too far past it. We opted for tacos and margaritas at the mexican restaurant in the Luxor instead. After that we made our way back to the room and crashed for the night. I had to get up early for a run before heading to the airport.

Some comparisons on course between Disney and RnR. There was no real photo ops for RnR. Some people stopped for the bands but I would have loved to have a picture with Elvis or a showgirl. I was looking for Elvis the entire time but he wasn't anywhere to be found. Don't they have clubs of impersonators? Water stops were aplenty, I want to say there were more than Disney. However they seemed to be in a hurry to clean them up, and they couldn't mix the Gatorade on course fast enough. Not a big deal for me since I didn't really drink it. Also the runners were not as polite with their trash, there were cups and Gu wrappers everywhere. One neat thing they did have was huge coolers up on stilts for people to refill their own water bottles, I thought Disney should really do that. I loved that they didn't hurry you through the finish like Disney tends to do. No one minded that I waited for Mike. They also gave out way more stuff. They even encouraged us to take as much as we needed. It's interesting that they gave out more and the experience was on par with Disney but they had less sponsors. The race shirt only says Geico on the front and Brooks on one sleeve.

When I finished I thought I wouldn't make an effort to do this race again again but now reflecting back I think I might want to try the marathon next time. I would love to get one of those finisher jackets! I should have one under my belt by then but the problem is there is a 5 hour limit on it. Maybe if I work real hard this next year and have @DopeyBadger help me I can be ready for it!

Yay! That's about the only meal/drink combo I can specifically recall (it's been about 14 yrs)from my first Vegas trip, we stayed at the Luxor too! :) I still had the yard drink cup thing and we'd used it for spare change / "fun money" until a few years ago I think. This was an awesome race report! I've heard good things about the Vegas races...so glad you and DH had a fun run. (still an oxymoron.)

Nice recap!

You are at the fitness level of a 6 hour marathon right now. An improvement of 1 HR down to a 5 HR marathon is about a 17% improvement. This is a physically achieveable improvement in a years time. It wouldn't be easy, but it is feasibly possible.

Doing the math after I wrote it did make me realize it would be hard work But I think it could be a good goal for 2017. I definetly want to get through Dopey before I say for sure.

Excellent recap! Love the shot with you and your husband in front of your wedding chapel.
Thanks!

Those yards get bigger everytime I go, it's insane!!

Awesome job! Awesome medal! and Awesome sparkly skirt! Was it weird running a whole race in the dark? Seems like it would be both cool and really strange at the same time.

Thanks! I am night owl and feel like I run better in evenings anyways so I didn't find it strange.

Great recap! Is the full marathon at night, too? I can't imagine doing that, but I suppose there's no better place for it than Vegas!
The full goes on at the same time as the half and I think they run a lot of the same course. By the time my corral went I think all the marathon turns were shut off because I didn't see where they split but they did run next to us for about the last 3 miles. I was watching the recap and they said they had a world record broken this year - the fast marathon in an Elvis suit, the winning runner was wearing an Elvis suit, only in Vegas lol

The guy who did that, Michael Wardian, is a beast. He also owns the world record Dopey time as well. 48.6 miles in 4:38:45 (5:44 min/mile average).

WOW am I bad at updates :o

Maybe because there wasn't much to report on last week. I spent Thanksgiving week at my parent's house in VA. They literally live on a mountain, So I decided to run on the treadmill instead of gravel mountain roads. Talk about boring!!!

I did get some important work done towards Dopey and that was picking out my nails :teeth: My SIL sells Jamberry and she always suckers me in with the Disney nails. So I picked these out in honor of Dopey.

I haven't really given much thought on outfits for Dopey. I feel this is very unlike me. Maybe because I am so focused on running this time. But if I am going to dress up now is the time to put them together so I can get some dress rehearsal runs in.

Ok now back to running, we got back Saturday night so I am running outside again!

11/27- Long run - 8 miles with a goal pace of 14:59. I thought this was one of my best LRs. I had one mile that was 13 secs. off pace but the rest were 7 secs or less off pace. Every long run lately has been giving me more and more confidence towards the marathon.

11/28- 4 mile Easy A w/ goal pace of 16:32. This was a blind run. I started out a little too fast and ended a little too slow. Part of the reason was the fact that I run the first 1/2 mile around a church set back off the road. Usually this isn't a problem but I was running in the dark and there was some guys hanging out in the cemetery that started yelling stuff at me and it got a little scary. I just ignored them and kept going but I did speed up.

11/29- 3.75 mile Strength run- .5 mile warm up followed by 3 x .75 miles @ strength pace (13:47) w/ .25 rest intervals in between and a .5 mile cool down. I decided to take DS9 out with me since he is training for the Hellcat 10k in January. We had a good time chatting while we ran and it was otherwise uneventful.

Only 30 more training runs until Dopey!
