Beware the RIAA may be coming after you (and me ). The article is rather lengthy, so follow this link to CNN

This paragraph realy got my attention, thoug hI'm still not terribly worried.

In some cases, subpoenas cite as few as five songs as "representative recordings" of music files available for downloading from these users. The trade group for the largest music labels, the Washington-based RIAA, previously indicated its lawyers would target Internet users who offer substantial collections of MP3 song files but declined to say how many songs might qualify for a lawsuit.

I warned my DD about this a month ago.
I doubt that she has cleared any files. Guess I need to show her the article.

Thanks for the post.

Kazaa ++ blocks RIAA and other services from peaking into what you are downloading and what music you have on your machine.

If they want to look at my hard drive I invite them, I can prove that I've owned or have the cd for ever song I have in my presence ;)

I don't know if I quite get it, but that means for people who share music, what does that mean for people who download the music?

They are going after people who only downloaded as well.

In the end I do not think this tactic will work. Honestly I do not think it can be stopped. Next thing we know it will become a "War On Music".

I would sign up for a pay site & have done so, only to cancel because it doesn't have the music I am looking for. I don't want 'new' music. I download old stuff. Stuff the record companies don't offer to me.

I would be willing to pay to download the songs I like if the price is reasonable. My problem with paying the price for a CD is that in a lot of cases I am paying for only one or two songs that I really want and a dozen that I could care less about.

I think its useless as well. There are millions and millions of people downloading.......probably 1/3 or more are underage children.

I just think its hopeless.

I still wonder if this is going to be only in the US , what happens if you are downloading from another country? I don't know, I think people will find a way around it anyway.

Another thing that bothers me is this....

What about downloading LIVE & B-Side recordings that the studios have never released, or wasn't even RECORDED in the studio, huh? I mean, come on gov't! Get a clue!

I admit to downloading music from Disney attraction music that was never released or is no longer available, But if I discover the music available commercially, I aways buy a copy (I spend alot at the cd recording kiosks in the parks. I have recently decided no to continue downloading even this limited number of songs if there is any chance the music is copyrighted.

Our government has a clue. The Live and B side agrument does not fly. Recording live performances of copyrighted materially is illegal, as is the redistribution of these recordings. The copyright holder has the right to determine if the materially should be distributed at all and how much it should cost. If a copyright holder determines that a song should never be distributed, you have no right to download it.

The problem is that too many people feel that they have a right to download a song just becuase its either expensive to purchase or not available commercially. Niether of these assumptions are true. The copyright holder determines your rights to a particular piece.

I had to laugh when I read an article in one of the newspapers in LA...it said if you want to know if you are one of the 800+ people who are being subpoenaed(sp) you can log on and register with your name and address...LOL...Just give them your info and they'll come and get you!

I have down loaded music and then went out and purchased the cd or in some cases have tried to purchase the CD but they don't even have them for sale any more!...I think they should go after the people who down load movies off of the internet!

I agree with that. Most of my downloads are songs I once purchased on albums, or even have on CD but I don't know how to mix CDS into a burned mix. Do you honestly think some pay service will have "rendezvous" by the Hudson Brothers, or "shake senora' by Harry Belafonte?
I plan on deleting my download program soon (imesh) but don't plan on deleting my downloaded music until they are here with a subpoena--and then they'll have to wait until I burn it all onto CDs. Which I may do soon anyhow just in case. I'm sure getting arrested wouldn't make a good impression on my new building principal!

This is just something that really bugs me.... I mean, I understand it is piracy in it's own form, BUT, it doesn't look like many of these big-name artists are suffering in their multi million $ mansions & their tricked out ferrarris or Expeditions. I completely agree with Fred Durst (whom I don't like) from Limp Bizkit when he said "we're here just to make music, man. If you wanna download our songs off the net & burn 'em, than rock on!"
