If you could start over.....

I did look long and hard at the 2000 to 2002 Ex with the 7.3 psd. It is a fine engine for towing, decent power, great mpg, very strong and reliable. I just couldn't afford it. The same Ex I bought would have been around $18,000 with the 7.3psd.

That's why I sucked it up and got the diesel this time around. Over the V10 it was only about $4,000 more and you can see the difference in what a used diesel vs. a gasser is after 7 years in your case $8,000 which would more than pay for the initial cost of the diesel. There is an upfront cost and each has to weigh what they need/desire. Unloaded on the freeway not towing I can get north of 18mpg even with my 4.10s as long as I keep the rpms around 2,000.

Benton,

While the V-10 Excursion with the 3.73 has a 10K towing capacity it only has a 17K GCWR and you'll most likely run out of GVWR on the X way before you even get much north of 8K on a TT. I have a 2007 Aluma-Lite 8306S (31'2") which is made by R-vision and my empty wt. is close to yours and my TT GVWR is like 7650. My Van weighs close to what your X should weigh full of fuel and one driver about 8K lbs. So you should be fine if you keep it reasonable with the Trailer loading and stuff in the X. I load mine to the max with 6900 lbs on the trailer axles and 9600 on the Van for a GCWR of 16.5K. That includes 60gal of diesel in the Van. and only two passengers, but a crap load of other stuff in the Van.

Larry, I agree with everthing you said about comparing an Ex with the 7.3 psd to the Ex with the v-10. After like a year of research and pondering this decision, I was actually wanting the diesel. Unfortunately, the good ones with under 100,000 miles on them, and within 500 miles of my home, were all $17,000 to over $20,000. If I could have found a one owner low milage 7.3 Ex for $14,000 I would have jumped all over it. The one I bought is so nice, well cared for and garage kept, and i got it for $10,000, I am just thrilled to have it. In our budget it just fits us perfectly, right now ( still paying for dd's college loan and her BIG wedding). Let me make this perfectly clear, in my opinion, the 2000 to 2002 excursion with the 7.3 psd is the ultimate tv for families with a travel trailer. The motor is legendary for reliability, the transmission and chassis is the same as the Super-Duty trucks, its very roomy, some have the factory big extended tow mirrors, and a huge plus is the 44 gal gas tank. For me , the big gas tank is a major reason why I chose the Ex over a suburban. On the long 1035 mile trip to the Fort, gas stops are the only thing I don't like, and the 44 gal tank gives me more range than any other tv out there. I know some guys add an aux tank in the bed of pickups, but a crew cab truck just doesn't have enough room for my family ( 4 adults, a baby, a small dog and 2 large dogs. Anyway, I love my V-10 Ex, its the next best tv after the 7.3psd Ex.

Wow, Larry, I just noticed that your van holds 60 gals of fuel! I had no idea a van was available with tanks like that. I must say now that your van may be the ultimate family tv! Thats awesome.

The tank holds 40 (rated at 35.5) and I carry an extra 20 in 5 gal jugs in my secure storage area when on long trips. You used to be able to get a second tank behind the axle, but loose the spare storage that holds around 20 or 30 gal, but that costs around $1,000. I know some will say it's a no, no to carry fuel inside of a vehicle, but it's diesel and I have assumed the risk and responsibility.

Larry, if i would have found a diesel Ex, I did think about carrying 2 5 gal cans of fuel to be added at a rest area. Assuming I could get at least 12 or 13 mpg towing, I could then make the 1035 mile trip with only 1 fuel stop no problem. Diesel is less volitile than gas, and I would use metal gerry cans and store it in the front outside compartment of my trailer, it is vented already for the propane tanks and battery. But I will not carry the more dangerous gasoline like that.
