My DD had heart surgery when she was about a pound and a half. She was born at 24 weeks gestation and had to have a surgery to close a heart valve. She ended up w/ 6 separate surgeries before we left the hospital 16 weeks later on my due date. W/ every surgery I went into my "phone booth". It was my inpentrable fortress where I shut out the rest of the world. I realized when I was terrified I did not want any contact. My family was always there for support - I just chose to be alone.
I definitely understand what you mean.

I sent my SIL an e-mail telling her about Laura's cath & biopsy. She called and is coming with me. Her DH is taking the day off work to stay with the kids so she can come. She arranged all this before even calling to let me know. I warned her its a long day with lots of just sitting around but she wouldn't take no for an answer. I'm glad she wouldn't.
