If you bring wine or beer on board, when, where do you drink it?

I'm waffling on whether to bring some wine on board to our 4 night cruise next week. I'm curious for those that do, when, where do you drink it? For me, it may be best to just budget for a drink a day and a wine package at dinner. Just curious.

Technically, any wine/beer you bring onboard is to be consumed in your room. Or, you can bring a bottle of wine to the dining room to be served (corkage fee charged).

On our last cruise friends brought wine. We would start in on of our rooms before dinner. We had wine glasses brought to the room by are stateroom attendant. The guys used their DCL beer mugs for the beers. What we didn't finish drinking in the room we carried to dinner and then proceeded to get other drinks at dinner when we were finished. We did not carry in original containers or bring the bottles outside the room.

At night on our verandah w my husband. We also had a glass on the verandah during sail away. If you like mimosas then bring a bottle of Prosecco and order orange juice from room service for breakfast.

Great question!! I’ve always wondered this too. We spent very little time on our verandah last time we cruised and there were so many other fabulous drinks to try around the ship! I’m still considering bringing alcohol onboard our next cruise though. Would you ever get in trouble for filling your (DCL) beer mug in your room and walking around the ship with it? And can you carry a glass of wine from your room around the ship, anywhere you go?? I don’t remember seeing people carrying wine around but maybe I wasn’t paying attention. Of course we will still order drinks at dinner and I’ll have to sometimes try the drink of the day, etc...

Certainly people will fill a glass in their room and carry it around the ship. But, that's against the DCL policy. From the DCL website:

• Alcohol brought on board may not be consumed in any lounge or public area.

Of course, people will do what they want, regardless of the rules.

We always take wine on board and have "happy hour" an hour or so before dinner. As stated above, you can have your room steward bring wine glasses to the room. Also, knowing it is not really DCL policy, we sometimes take the glasses with us to dinner to finish off...not the bottle. We did take a bottle of one of our favorite local (Oregon) wines with us to Palo once and impressed the wine steward so much (he had never seen such a vintage) that he tried some, loved it and later DCL contacted the winery. We left the bottle with him...still had to pay the corkage fee, rats!

We bring 2 bottles of wine and a 6 pack of beer for every cruise. DH likes beer (I really don't care for it) and he likes my wine also. First thing after the drill is having a going away celebration on the veranda. Then dinner with a wine package for half the cruise (3 bottles for 7 night) and have 1/2 bottle per meal. End some nights with a glass of wine on the veranda (again) or maybe a cognac in one of the lounges. We get out monies worth with the veranda.

This is also what I do with wine. DH typically only drinks beer brought on board in our stateroom.

I brought a lidded acrylic stemless wine tumbler and I would take it to the shows or to sit on Deck 4. We showed up to dinner every night with a glass of wine and the servers were always very pleasant about it. They would take them from us and put them on a round serving tray and walk us to our table. We were never made to feel bad and I don't feel like we broke any rules.

As mentioned, wine and beer you carry onboard should be consumed in your stateroom. Generally, I will have a glass of wine in the afternoon along with an All Hands on Deck platter. Some nights I'll have another glass on my verandah after dinner and the show.

We generally enjoy beer or champagne while getting ready for dinner and/or sitting on our balcony in the evening after dinner.

We find the pricing of drinks on board to be quite reasonable and a nice selection so we don't typically bother to bring anything on board with the intent of drinking it (i.e., instead of taking it home). We did pick up some wine in Naples and Nice on our Med cruise which ended up being consumed in our stateroom on a couple of afternoons. We'd been to wine tastings in both locations and bought what we'd tasted and just couldn't wait. Normally, I'd just run up to the pool deck, get something and bring it down to the stateroom or drink it on deck.

I drink it in my room, and beer in a cup out & about, and a heavy-pour glass of wine carried to dinner.

We do the same on each cruise. As long as you're respectful, the crew will not bother you and we never were made to feel bad either. We also spend money at the bars as well so DCL is definitely not losing out on anything from us by us walking around with a glass of wine.

As for taking alcohol out of the cabin...we have a "deal" with DCL - we expect them to provide us with the experience promised, and they can expect us to follow their policies. Respect goes two ways, and we always have fabulous cruises. We used to enjoy a glass of wine in the cabin before leaving for the evening, but any more we prefer alcohol in the great settings of the lounges and decks, so we just purchase from the bars/attendants.

I don't know how normal our experience was but I bought a six pack in port during our last cruise. I did not have a bottle opener with so I asked our stateroom host. He directed me to the promenade lounge and they opened my beer no questions asked.

I had no idea about rules regarding drinking our beer outside our cabin but certainly was never made to feel I was doing anything wrong by anyone.

I put rules into two categories:

1. Rules intended to promote enjoyability and safety; and
2. Rules solely intended to benefit the company's bottom line.

I don't cut in line, hog chairs, abuse the staff or ignore the hand washing stations. Rules are in place related to these issues for enjoyability and safety reasons.

However, when it comes to an arbitrary rule like drinking (carried on alcohol) only in the room I am not likely to comply.
