If you bought a Dell, HP, Compaq, or Apple laptop - look here

I'm torn. I have an eligible Dell laptop, with 8600M chip, but haven't had any problems, after 2 1/2 years. The risk involved in sending the computer back-and-forth for repair, and the inconvenience of being without my laptop for an indefinite period of time, makes me wonder if it is worth going forward with the replacement.

Does anyone have more detailed information on what percentage of chips will eventually exhibit these problems, and in what time-frame?

Never mind... I went through the process of filing a claim, and this was the reply:I take that as good news. :woohoo:

At what point did you get that notification? I've had problems with my laptop recognizing the wireless and with the screen going black, both being repaired under my warranty. I'm not sure if my laptop qualifies, it almost looks like it doesn't based on model number. I went through the claim process anyway. I submitted and it let me submit. I'm just wondering when it would say if it didn't qualify.

Thanks!

I went through the process of filing a claim online. I got that message after I entered my Service Tag Number. Perhaps that indicates something about the specific version of the chip installed.

I just wanted to bump this up and put another thank you to the OP. I just got my letter yesterday saying that it was approved for replacement! :cool1: Took awhile to get the letter, but I'm happy to be getting something that we can actually use! And I think my dad can get his replaced, too. It looks like his also qualifies.

I was just looking at the sight again and it says that if you filed the form between the above dates and were denied, you are encouraged to try again! Just thought it may help some of you.

Too bad my Dell Desktop purchased in 2005 doesn't qualify! It is having major issues! :rotfl2:

I can't seem to find the serial numbers for the Apples though. I am not having issues but would like to know if mine might be in the mix and what to look for.

We got ours yesterday. Exciting stuff!

Thanks I will have to check my HP when I get home, it supposedly crashed in August per Best Buy and it has just been sitting on the desk at home. It sounds like it is having oone or two fo the problems mentioned and we were just told that the aircard had burned out, that was the reason we couldn't get a wireless signal.

If they ask you to send it in, do you have to have the power cord? DH can't find it since we brought it home from Best Buy and I knoiw we had it when we left the store.

No, I have the instruction sheet here (I actually just came over to our household computer to look up a FedEx place to return it) and the picture shows just the laptop being packaged, and it doesn't say anything about powercords. I had wondered that as well.

Well, that is wonderful. I am now glad we didn't sell it to DH's friend (we couldn't without the power cord), cause this might be a whole new set of problems, I didn't want to deal with.

I will definitely check this out when I get home. DH got a new computer when this one "crashed" and I have been needing one myself, might just work out.

I sure hope my son's computer gets replaced. It died over a year ago and has just been sitting in his closet. I checked and knew by the dates of purchase that we were right in there and then I checked the product number and his Compaq Presario is one of the affected. I filed online; I wonder when we'll hear if we are approved for replacement? We already bought him a replacement since he is a senior in college and certainly needed one but a new computer is a new computer. I have two other sons to think about, lol.

I had the same problem with my HP and boy was it a fight to get HP to fix my laptop. HP said that my laptop was not on their list and wanted me to pay 300. to replace the motherboard that their faulty Nvidia chip burnt up. I had to file a claim with the BBB before HP would fix my HP for free. I'm in disbelief that my model is still not on that HP list.

The list is not a catch-all list for any models that may have ever had any units that went bad. The list is a list of models that had a specific problem.

Like it or not (and I've got both a Dell and an HP in the closet here, both broken, and neither on the list), there is no guarantee that every product we ever buy will work past the warranty date. Indeed, you can rely on the fact that that will not be the case.

It was about a month from the time I filed the claim, until the time I got the return instructions (which was Wednesday). I was just starting to worry that I'd never hear, but then I did.

I just sent it out yesterday-I'll update when I get the new computer. It was so weird, shoving my computer into the packaging and leaving it  I took good care of it and was possessive of it (I didn't allow dh or kids to touch it, it was mine) and the clerk at FedEx goes, 'is it already broken?' Um yeah :sad1:

I'm a computer killer :upsidedow My first laptop cooked itself, twice. Actually, any electronic thing I touch dies-my microwave did on Monday. And last month was my deep fryer, and before that, a wafflemaker. Don't get me started on cell phones

Bummer my daughter's laptop has been sitting in the closet because it was doing exactly what these symptoms are. Its a model listed and the correct dates too but it said it wasnt eligible.

I sent two out yesterday. The guy at Fed Ex said I was the sixth person this week to send a computer back under this program. I am also wondering how long it will take to get the new computers.

This originally happened to me as well. It is very picky about how you enter the product key. Try again.

It should be noted that there are specific components responsible for the recall, and not every computer with a specific model number had those components. As I understand it, it had to do, also, with configuration choices.

I have 3 HP's and 2 are the same models bought at different times, I will have to check all three of them. I am not too crazy about the replacement though :(

I swear I posted yesterday, but I'll try again. :)

Has anyone gotten their replacement laptop yet? If so, how long did it take from the time NVIDIA received your old laptop? How does the new laptop compare speed-wise, etc. to your old one?

I haven't gotten my replacement yet, but I am a little nervous because my old one was a custom built and had more bells and whistles than this new one will have. But it will be nice to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly again.
