I am a big wine drinker and I read a book last year it was called The Wine Trials I think. They compared different wines head to head in blind taste tests.

The big winner was a champagne that was compared to Dom Perignon and more people preferred it. Best part it's widely available and costs about 12.00 a bottle.

Sparkling Dom Ste Michelle Brut

We drink it occasionally and it's a really good champagne I figured this was a good time to mention it!

Few people know what a 'good' champagne tastes like or like one when they taste it. Most novice champagne drinkers prefer a sweeter sparkling wine. I am a champagne lover. We have hosted several tastings and it's fun to listen and watch people get to know real champagne. Dom Perignon would not be my preference but it has perhaps the most recognized name. Years ago, there was this sweet little cellar in Napa called Hans Kornell that made a beautiful sparkling wine. Unfortunately, they closed because the family (grandchildren) lost interest. It was heads and shoulders above most other sparkling wines and it was turned in the bottle like a real champagne. We went through cases of it at our wedding and drank it on many occassions- lucky us!!!

In college I took a wine tasting class. The professor was the wine adviser for American Airlines, thus got a lot of free wine for the class. I can say I have tried a $6000 bottle of champagne and a $1000 bottle along with the standard $60 and $15 ones. In a class of 200 college students, nobody preferred the two most expensive bottles.

At least in France, the soil and geography, not the actual grapes or their production dictate the rating of champagne. (Per AOC, with some slight variances for a couple regions) So just remember that person tonight who is bragging about serving Grand Cru champagne, may have dramatically overpaid.

Costco sells a Kirkland branded champagne which isn't super cheap, but I found to be pretty good for the price.

Our favorite sparkling wine from California is Domaine Chandon from Napa. Their Etoil is excellent. Bottles are anywhee from $20 & up.

I like the St Michelle, but I do like a sweet sparking wine, too, and am fond of Moscato d'Asti for that, really like Bosc, Lucio is all right, but lot of green apple taste...

We prefer Prosecco to champagne. And there are many reasonable priced ones out there, particularly at Trader Joe's.

Costco's premier brand is excellent.

agnes!

My absolute champagne is Veuve Cliquot. I had the opportunity to try this at the vineyard in France before it was available in the states. I remembered the orange label and was very excited when it started appearing in the states. I have a bottle being chilled right now for this evening. It costs anywhere from $45 to $60/bottle depending on where you buy it. The Rose cost slightly more but is worth every penny.

I bought that for tonight, too. I like the Chateau Ste. Michelle wines and thought that this might be good. The man in the licquor store said the same thing about it being compared to much more expensive wines.

I'm excited to try this.

This is my favorite too! :goodvibes We always have a few bottles around and I'm sure we'll drink one tonight. :thumbsup2

Just a note that while Dom Ste Michelle Brut is a great sparkling wine it is NOT champagne. Champagne refers to a region in France and only sparklings made in that region may be called champagne.

Hmm, I am curious when you went to this tasting. Vueve, is most commonly refered to as Yellow Label and has been widely available in the US since the early 80's.

My DH and I made a pact when we turned 40 - champagne EVERY Sunday with breakfast to celebrate. It is going on 5 years now and I can count on 2 hands the weekends this has not happened. It is so nice to celebrate without reason and makes Sunday mornings something we look forward to. Our favorite is Perrier Jouet but we have found some very inexpensive substitutes such as Rotari, Aria and Chandon. Enjoy!

Domaine Ste. Michelle is fabulous!

It combines just the right amount of yeastiness that is filled with fruit. Definitely will be purchasing this again and again.

That's how long I've been drinking Vueve. I know my husband was able to get it before that, but he had connections;).

I have no idea how long it has been imported, but I know that it was always free flowing at my parent's Christmas party in the early 80's where I would sit like a good little girl at the edge of the playroom getting a glimpse of their famous Christmas parties while sneaking views in my footie pajamas. It very well could have been available before then, but my gut says if it was free flowing in the deep south suburbs of New Orleans it was likely available before then in the USA. The brand was purchased by the LVMH group, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton in the 80s and I would bet money that it was a well know brand before then or a large conglomerate would not take a risk on a complete unknown. Champagnes, wines, etc are partially built on taste but most are built on brand hype and advertising. The non vintage VC is a marketing dream and satisfies the public, please give me a bottle of Le Grande Dame and I will be happy. ;) We make a $50 field bet everytime we walk into the Paris casino and if we win we walk over and buy a bottle of Le Grande Dame if we win, such a treat. :rotfl:

Domaine Chandon is very good. :) We did a tour and tasting along with a mix class for my BFF's bachlorette party. It was tons of fun and very educational. Domaine Chandon is her favorite sparkling wine.
My favorite is Domaine Carneros, still right there in Napa and very very good! If you haven't tried it take a drive and visit, the grounds are nice and in the spring it's so nice to sit outside and have a sparkling wine/cheese pairing! :)

I really like Chatueau Ste Michelle wines too, I haven't seen the sparkling version but thanks to you (and the OP of course) I will be on the lookout for it! :)

Yes, all sparkling wines produced outside of Champagne are not called or considered champagne, they may use the process to develop but these are called sparkling wines instead of Champagne. :) Honestly, I had a bottle of champagne from France, it was not as good as the sparkling wines I've had from CA. :) In fact....I'm sort of hoping to take DBF to Napa this Friday, it's his birthday and we need to replenish our wine/sparkling wine supply. ;)

All seem to be great choices.

But you didn't define "reasonably priced". Under $10, Under $20, Under $30? Above $30 is moving out of reasonable in my book.
Our special occassion wine now is Schramsberg Blanc De Noirs which I can find for $25 -$27.
We used to be huge Dom Pérignon fans back in the mid 1980's when it was still under $40 a bottle. We stopped buying it after it crested $40, and good lord now it's over $100. Wish my salary had skyrocketed like that!!

I love champagne on occasion. I had some cheap stuff on Christmas Eve.

Wine is like a hobby for me, I wouldn't call myself a connoisseur...I got the "Wine for Dummies" DVD on Netflix, and a lot of trial and error.
