If you are a "breakfast person"...

Is that the Ramada Inn Maingate, or Residence Inn?
I believe they are talking about Residence Inn Maingate.

I have stayed at almost all the hotels in the area. My first choice would be Residence Inn Maingate. The walk is 15 mins. (My kids are fast walkers, and they do it in 15, cannot vision doing it in 10.) Breakfast is great. We always take it out by the pool. I haven't seen the issues another poster has had at these type of hotels.

I also like Hojo's. The space would be better for you and you might consider bringing what we call "pre breakfast" to hold you til 11 or noon.

I do love Candy Cane. The breakfast is good, but it isn't anything you can't bring with you. We do the premium rooms, so they bring the breakfast to you, which is an advantage as I get enough milk/juice for the afternoon/evening.

Another thing I like is that they will do daily grocery shopping for you.(If you reguire that) Very helpful to save park time.

Jack

RI Maingate also has a children's outdoor play area. When my kids were the OP's ages, they needed somewhere to run around. They also have a light dinner Monday-Thursday which saves a bundle on park food.

And they put the groceries away!!!!! (Love that part.)

There is also a small store to get items.

Because you are planning pretty far out you might make a reservation that you can cancel or change for free at each option.

Often deals only get to the next season at DLR. So since we are in the Holidays Season now, we only see deals into the next offseason. So after the holidays when we are in the offseason and Spring Break offers are out, keep an eye out for the next offseason which May falls in.
I've booked a Kids Suite at HoJo's, and yes I can change/cancel it. And yes, I will keep an eye for any offers and need to wait a couple of months...

I've stayed at the CCI and not the HOJO. So, this will be a bit of a lopsided opinion. I would not dream of staying at the CCI with 5 people on a room! Those rooms are so tiny, I fely suffocated with my family of 3.

But, for your situation, five people says suite to me. Or, two rooms at the CCI.
I've reached the same conclusion, I so wanted to like CCI but I will not feel comfortable.. maybe another time.

With RI, you don't have to make the choice between space or food...you get both!
I've also reached that conclusion. That's why I reconsidered RI...

I have never stayed at either place, but you mention one having two bathrooms (the Hojo) and I would opt for that every time! It is a must for more than three or four people in a room.

If you reserve the 2 bedroom unit or the penthouse unit at Residence Inn, you will have 2 bathrooms also.

I too am a "huge breakfast person". What's that saying? "Most important meal of the day"... Absolutely in my eyes. I read a great review about steakhouse 55 for breakfast and checked out the menu... Looks fantastic to me and it's on our itinerary fir our visit.

To me is breakfast or brunch are a good time of the day to spend the money for high quality food, it just makes your day go so nicely ;) Riverbelle Terrace is a favorite from my past as well. I always get nostalgic thinking of Walt sitting there....

Yay for breakfast people!

I have stayed at both Hojos and CCI. My family prefers CCI, BUT there is no way I would do CCI with 5 people in one room. We had a standard room with two adults and one teen. It was fine for us but would not do with four people. While the room you would be looking at must be larger, the rooms at CCI are not spacious.

At the Candy Cane, a deluxe room is about 40 square feet larger than the standard rooms, and the premium room is almost 100sf larger. The standard room is too small for us, but we often do the premium room with 4 adults (and 2 service dogs.)

wow there is no way I would stay in a room with myself, my husband my 2 kids and my mother in law or even my own mother LOL!!! Its way too cramped and after a full day of the parks you might want some breathing space. I would say 2 bathrooms would be a must. I have stayed at Hojo's and the beds was great the kids pool was nice. I don't think a kids suite would be ideal for your situations unless your MIL wants to sleep on a tiny pull out couch or a bunk bed? I have stayed at a Residence Inn with 2 bedrooms but in Garden Grove and I so loved it. I would assume it would be the same as the main gate. Lots of perks with that place- with some free meal options and lots of space! But you would also get a small kitchen and be together like feeling. Which is too some folks the point of a trip- for families who don't get too spen too much time with each other- and as you said your MIL is in her 70's and may need help with some things. But it is almost the same price as getting two rooms at the Hojo's and2 rooms at the Candy Cane Inn. Sometimes Hojos' has the ent rate option and not sure when your dates are... Hojos also has an ART bus stop.... just in case you need it. Also not sure on your kids ages - maybe 1 of them can stay with the MIL if you get 2 queen rooms at either the Hojos or Candy Cane? Lots too choose from... Good luck with that.... Comfort will be your main key... You can always get food from lots of places....to store in your room too! if togetherness is what you desire most- I would choose Residence Inn. They also share the same art bus as Hojos!

Wow I had thought about the Cand Cane Inn also.
But after hearing about the RI I will consider that.

Sorry this is super long :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes

I've stayed at all 3 and for what you are looking for I would stay at RI.

RI
Pro-
spacious-we had the penthouse suite which slept up to 8. There was a king in the loft (with it's own bathroom), a bedroom with 2 queens and a sleeper sofa. The stairs for the loft are pretty steep so I would think about who would sleep upstairs. The loft room also is a bit of a tight squeeze. In ours they had a small chair in the corner next to the night stand and DH had to maneuver himself to get into bed. It's not too bad just something to consider. The room with the 2 queens was wider than the room you would get at CCI (meaning your bed wasn't touching the AC unit next to the window)
breakfast-pretty good considering you got hot food. We had waffles, scrambled eggs, bacon. Then there was your usually continental fanfare. My DH is a HUGE breakfast fan and he really appreciated the breakfast at RI. The eating area is good too if your room is too far to bring food back. There were plenty of tables.
Kitchen/grocery service-My family is big on making their own meals while at DL (not me!!!) so they liked to option of going back to the room to make a dinner or whatever. You can leave your grocery list at the front desk and get your groceries delivered to your room in the afternoon. The kitchen has the basics for you to cook and eat. It was nice to have.

Con-
It's a bit far. It took us about 20 min to walk from our room to the gates. We are average walkers. I didn't care having to cross the streets with my LO dawdling about. If you don't mind walking then this might not be a con for you. :goodvibes For my family, I dreaded the walk back as my LO was super tired, it was at night and though we had a big group of us walking back we had some creeper guy following us. We had my 70yo grandma with us and we had to take ART 1 night. I think it was just too much for her at the end of the day.
Parking-depending on where your room is parking can be a bit tight. We were at the far back of the property but the only parking that was close to our rooms were near the front. Those were full and the other spots were so far away. There was a big bus taking a lot of space in which others could have parked. But we were able to move our cars closer the following day.
It seemed a bit outdated. I'm not sure if it was just my unit but it felt kinda of.... old and dirty. The carpet felt gross underneath your feet (I always wear slippers but check when I first check in just to see :rotfl2: )

Hojo-
Pro
Proximity-loved that we were so closed to the parks, seemed like it was less than 10 min.
Space-the room was a good size for a family of 3, though we were in a deluxe room, not a suite.
Staff-I'm a big believer on happy staff=great customer service. HoJo staff have always been gracious and nice. I've never encountered a rude employee.
Kiddie Pool-self explanatory :rotfl2:

Con-
I actually have never had a con for HoJo except no breakfast for DH. It's not 1 for me since I'd rather eat in the park or wait until brunch.

CCI
Pro
proximity-google maps has CCI at approx .52 miles to the gate while Hojo's is about .51 miles. I feel it's about 10 min for both routes.
Cleanliness-I cannot express how much I appreciate the cleanliness of the room. I was able to let DS walk around barefoot (as he was in a "I hate socks" phase) and he never got those gross black feet. LOVE IT!
Breakfast-decent enough, nothing substantial but a little breakfast is better than no breakfast. Tiny breakfast area. DH always brought breakfast back to the room.
Quaintness-I really feel like is a hidden gen tucked behind some shrubs. It doesn't have the "motel" feel, IYKWIM. I think it's very well kept. I never felt like there was a safety issue.
Staff-like HoJos I've never had a bad experience with their staff. Super nice and if you look at tripadvisor, the GM answers almost every single review. IMHumbleO, I think that says a lot.
Shuttle-having their own private shuttle is nice BUT it drops you off at the edge of the parking area (not where the ART buses drop people off). So if you wait for the shuttle at the end of the night and other people in your party walk, more than likely those people will get there before you and probably have started settling in for the night when you walk in the door.

Cons
Space-those rooms are tiny. One of our beds were right next to the AC unit next to the window. I didn't mind as it was just the 3 of us BUT for 5 people I would get stir crazy. The room we stayed at in GCH was much bigger than the CCI room we had. It's a pretty tight squeeze for 2Qs.
No elevator-I don't this is a big con BUT it was a pain when we checked in at midnight with a pre-schooler and they gave us a room on the second floor. We put our luggage in the stoller to use as a cart and then realized there was no elevator. So if someone in your party has an issue getting up and down stairs, request for a 1st floor room.
Pool-nothing to write home about. It is very pretty for a motel pool. Clean and pretty to look at.

I will throw in Desert Palms because I think they are actually decent now.

Pro-
space-depending on what room you get, there is ample space to fit 5 people. The Borrego (2Q and sleeper sofa) was good for us when we went with my sister and a couple of cousins. I believe there is also a 2BD, 2BA suite and each room has 2Qs. The cleanliness was pretty good too. No black feet from my LO to show me. :rotfl:
Breakfast-IMO, it was between RI and CCI. It has really improved as a few years before their reno I would not recommend DP to anyone because their breakfast consisted of really old pastries and yucky juice in a scary, dark room near the underground garage. Their rooms were very outdateed and yucky. The DP has improved tremendously.

FYI:
proximity-it's just a bit further and CCI (if you are walking down S. Harbor toward W. Katella you would hit CCI first, then this tiny mom and pop convenience store (ABC store), 7-11 is right next to that (on the corner of Harbor and Katella) and then DP around the corner. It's only a couple min. more nothing too extreme.
Pool-we didn't use it but IIRC, it was indoor. Nothing to write home about though there were plenty of kids enjoying it.
There is a coin-op laundry facility at DP too.

Con-Parking can be a pain. Tiny spots and huge cars that take up two spaces.
Staff-they can be testy at times. Some are fabulous while others ignore you.

I would stick with HoJo. Then drop all of these suggestions when the offers for the DLR hotels come out and you can book one of those. :rotfl2:
oh and please excuse typos, I'm typing 1 handed ATM! LOL

I've stayed at both and will not return to hojo due to the location next to the 5 freeway(not sure if the kids suites faces the freeway), we had a freeway facing room and even the AC on high would not mask the noise. I know not all the rooms are like that, but it's a chance I don't want to take.
CCI would be my choice, as mentioned the standard rooms are small but if you were to get a premuim room that additional 100sf would make a big difference. the breakfast is basic but great, and the shuttle is a great option...just my own personal take on it......popcorn::

Wow thanks all for your inputs! Much appreciated... I read that HoJo's is installing something (no idea what, sorry) to reduce the noise, since yes, the kids suite face the highway (and that was a worry of mine), but allegedly they're almost done with the rooms, so noise should not be a problem in May.
Funny thing... DH and I are optimistic in discounts available for the DLR hotels, and if that happens, it will not matter whether we'll fit! But if it doesn't, HoJo or RI will be perfect for us... I decided to put the decision in hold until then, and keep the Kids Suit reservation just in case.
Thanks again!
