If weekend points were the same....wouldn't you think.....

EXACTLY! This is what my guide told me when I asked this 9 years ago when we purchased. In my opinion, I thought that it would be nice for DVC members to get WD points on the WE if we stayed for 7 days-but I know nothing will change. Oh well.

Eh, just buy more points, then it won't hurt as much... LOL

With 550 pts. I don't think twice about weekend stays...

We have 250 points and are thinking about adding 25-50 points. If we stay at WDW and use DVC we always use our points for weekends, but not at HH or VB.The WE points at HH would kill us:scared1:

Yeah... I've seen those point charts... They can be headache inducing!

My trips down really can only take place on weekends because of my lack of vacation time... I usually take a few 3 or 4 day weekends a year to go down and relax... I have to stay overnight Friday and Saturday...

In a dreamworld it would be nice to lower the points -- but in the real world you'd still be booking non-DVC for weekends because those within driving distance would be booking up just about every weekend! ;-) ......

:goodvibes We all want to stay longer:wizard:

ITA. The locals would have a field day! If the points were the same all week, it would be like having a second home for those close enough to drive. Just think if you could book a studio for 12 pts a night on Fri and Sat. The minimum buy in could go a long way.
........

It isn't just the locals. How many of us who fly in, would come on a Friday and stay 8 or 9 nights, thus using up two weekends for every trip? There aren't enough weekends for all of us to do that! As Pam posted, many of us would still be booking non-DVC weekend nights.

To me, figuring out the point charts is like handicapping a horse race. The objective is to put enough weight on each horse such that they all reach the finish line at the exact same time. For DVC, it's to set the points such that the demand for every night is equal. FWIW, as far as the weekday vs weekend handicapping, I think DVC has got it as close to right as is possible without making the system impossibly complex.

I feel very fortunate because what we were able to do was buy more points so we can go for long weekends. Another "plus" is the fact that we own points at BWV and AKV with what I consider the bargain categories. The only bargains that we don't have the 11 month advantage at are OKW GV's and believe me, we've been tempted to add on there as well.

It would be royally difficult if not impossible to have a point chart that would make us all happy. However, if tweeking were to be done, I would want member input, somehow. I do not like the major decisions that have been done to make my life simplier, environmentally friendly (a big HA! to that reason for the studio amenities changes) or reservation changes due to member input, when I know that there was not any effort by management to get member input on the matters that they have changed. I get the surveys, phone and on the cards, and none of the changes had anything to do with the questions that I was asked.

This is interesting because I always thought the weekday points were a bargain:thumbsup2 . By moving on the weekends (or paying cash on an AP rate like we are doing next week) we have been able to stretch our measly 150 points despite requiring 2brs for our family. If the weekend points went down the weekday points would go up...so no net gain for members that stay a week or longer.

I agree, alot of us would hit both weekends if the points were the same as Sun-Thurs..

My thought as well.

We aren't alone in flying down on Saturday and flying out on Saturday as a normal schedule (still two weekend nights), and other DVCers do the weekends for cash plan to get a few more nights out of their points (and we've done that as well ourselves). If weekend points were the same as midweek, we'd buy points for flying in late Friday night and out late Sunday - using two Friday and Saturday nights instead of one. We can assume that although weekends wouldn't book twice as fast because not everyone would do the same, they'd book much faster - and perhaps in the end more than twice as fast by the time you get those within a reasonable drive making plans for long weekends.

It's a timeshare... They expect their customers to spend the week...

Not true. When we purchased in '97 our guide specifically told us that one of the best parts of DVC was that you could spend as many or as few days as you'd like...that it wasn't like a traditional timeshare where you were locked into a week. It was one of the main selling points, at least back then.

Points for a week would stay the same if they changed the number of points required for the weekend. The number of points per weekday night would increase. So if it requires 189 points for seven days now, it would require 189 points for seven days then.

For example,
NOW: Sun-Thur 21 points a night Fri and Sat 42 points a night = 189 points
Then: Sun -Sat 27 points per night = 189 points

I guess we have always just planned on one weekend stay in our trips. We will arrive early in the week, stay through the weekend, then leave sometime the next week. Averaged out over the 10 days or so, the points are not so bad. We have done split stays by going somewhere else for one of the high point days, but that was due to going somewhere else, such as the Space Coast or to Tampa Bay for a baseball game.

For those that have been members for a long time, you might remember that a number of years ago, I believe it was in 2000, DVD floated to members that DVD was seriously considering raising the weekday points and lowering weekend points by an equal amount. The stated reason is what many suspect -- the occupancy rate for weekends was significantly lower than weekdays.

Many members have enough points for the weekdays and avoid weekends. The outcry to the suggested change was cacophonous. It has never been mentioned by DVD since.

I can see that - if you planned your DVC purchase around flying in on Sunday (or flying in on Saturday and staying a night in a cheap hotel), and flying out Friday afternoon - which we know from booking patterns that the Sunday- Thursday night stay is very popular - evening out points would really create problems.

We flew Sat. to Sat. for a 2 week stay but we paid cash that arrival Sat. (dvc disc. cash ressie) then we paid cash for the following weekend too. Then our last night at BCV was a Friday and another cash night. Now last summer we flew in on a Wed. and flew out on a Thursday....got cheaper aifare that way too. I think that is what we are going for this trip too. Flying in mid week and returning on a Thursday the following week. I am probably going to do cash for one weekend night and bite the bullet for pts. on the other. That way we can stay 8 nights. :thumbsup2

It's a good idea and if I could swing it because of work vacation time I would... Sadly I have missed 5 days because of the flu this year and lost a whole week of vacation time... UGH...
