We can afford Universal Health Care...

We can afford putting more money into education...

We can afford alternative energy.

I am willing to support the bailout if the money we collect back (and I want it aggressively collected) from this bailout is put into these programs.

How about NO to all of it. I'm sick of paying for everybody else. I pay my bills, everyone else pay theirs. Its been a long day, I'm gonna go run away...

I just want to know who the "millions of innocent Americans facing foreclosue are", that Barry mentioned in his press conference. How innocent are you when you borrow money you can't pay back.

It is not about being innocent - it is about being ignorant. I guess they didn't realize that when you get an adjustable mortgage your payment changes!!!!!
Alot of people were naive just like those voting in this election who base their votes on talking points and not reality.

who is paying the 10 billion a week we are spending in Iraq?

Well, if you are sick of paying for everybody else's bills, then I suppose you are against the bailout -- because that is what the American public is being asked to do.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean to accomplish when you refer to Senator Obama as Barry? Is it supposed to mean anything beyond your own immaturity?

So it's those darned borrowers? I guess they took advantage of the banks and the banks inadvertently passed on the loans to the Wall Street fat cats who made millions on the deal and now we should bail them out for getting taken in by these trickster borrowers who were told they could own a home of their own.

Yes...it's not the banks or the brokers. It's those borrowers. No relief for them---they're just getting what they deserve. The banks on the other hand, let's give them an extra hundred billion or two so they can adequately pay their staff for the hard time they're going through right now. They were just taken in by these swindlers who took out loans to buy a home and are now getting kicked out of those homes.

The sad reality is that we can't afford any of the above.

Neither candidate seems to understand this as both Obama and McCain's economic plans will add to the federal debt after year one. McCain's much more than Obama's though.....by about 300 Billion.

We find ourselves in a nasty situation. We'll come out of it eventually though, and the economy will begin to grow, but I do believe it's going to be awhile. It looked for awhile like we may only experience a short and shallow recession, but not it appears that it will be deeper and longer.

I can't afford universal health care. I have a lifetime condition and have benefited from having great doctors that *I* got to choose to see and can see them in a timely manner. I've managed to maintain my condition very well without the Government involved in my health care decisions.

I also think that the bailout is a joke.

Uggghh... don't even mention Universal Healthcare. :sad2: As a diabetic I am truly worried that a UHC system would wind up killing me early. I need control over my healthcare.

Hit the nail on the head!

Well, you're obviously smart enough to not get yourself into financial trouble. I am too. But not everyone is savvy enough to understand what they were getting themselves into. And really, there's plenty of blame to go around....from Clinton to Bush, Greenspan to Wall Street....on and on it goes.

But you are right, there sure are a bunch of people out there who had no business buying a house. And while I'm voting for Obama, I think it's important to note that a lot of those "millions" of foreclosures are likely second homes/investment homes/vacation homes. Those people aren't going to get bailed out in any form.

But here we are...really in a pickle. The credit markets are really going haywire tonight. The cost of borrowing is at an all-time high....it looks like the world is indeed very nervous about whether our little bailout will be passed. Banks are simply not lending in their normal fashion.

I'm beginning to wonder if this bailout will be enough to stabilize things.

Unfortunately we are at a point where we cannot afford any of this stuff. Our deficit is growing daily and it's going to be even worse with this bailout.
There will have to be SUBSTANTIAL cuts in all programs, services, etc., throughout the federal gov't in order to come anywhere close to meeting our financial obligations.
And when those cuts come down the line, it'll flow downhill to the states and local gov'ts. And our taxes will go up. Federal, state, and local. There's just no way around it.

95% of Americans pay their mortgages on time. Those "borrowers" aren't homeowners. They are renters. They entered into a mortgage agreement, often with no money down, borrowed their closing costs and when the 'rent' went up, they couldn't afford it. The limits of mortgage relief that is currently out there is up to $630K. I don't consider that a "starter home" of a struggling homeowner. Banks were under pressure to make loans to people who couldn't afford it. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac gained by buying them up and repackaging them as AAA products, and here we are. All of it contributed to runaway housing prices that served to price starter homes out of the market. We not only paid our mortgage on time, we paid it off. Where is our relief? That said, we are stuck with this and have no choice but to extend the money as a "loan" and hope we the tax payer get it back.

This is the exact attitude that got us in this mess.

"If I have to pay $3000 a year in electricity, I can afford a Mercedes."

"If I have to pay $5000 in real estate taxes, I can afford a flat screen TV."

Who is the swindler?

If the people that gladly accepted the loan in the first place actually PAID what they agreed, there would be no problem.

Don't try and pass the blame to "fat cats". Nobody put a gun to people's head and forced them to take a loan that they chose not to pay back.

The REAL swindlers are the ones who cheated the banks by not paying back the money that they took.

Am I the only one that thinks the next great revolution will be alternative energy and/or gene therapy?

Will we be the ones in that or will it go to the Chinese? Probably because they are investing in themselves instead of bailouts, wars...

Just some random thoughts from an economist.

I think Tom Friedman agrees with you in his new book comparing the Information Technology revolution with the forthcoming Energy Technology revolution.
