If we are at war with Iraq in Jan would you go to WDW in Feb?

So I am sitting here reading the DIS and I have the afternoon news on in the background. The news person just states that there is a sense that we are closer to war with Iraq then at any other time since the Gulf War and that the "experts" believe it would begin in Jan 03. Not looking for comments on war here!!

My question is to those who have trips booked for Jan and Feb 03. If we are at war with Iraq when it comes time for your trip will you feel safe going to WDW? We are booked for Feb 1st through the 6th of 2003 and we are really looking forward to this trip. I am tring to tell myself not to worry about it but I have a feeling I will be nervous if we are at war with Iraq when it comes time for our trip.

I have a trip booked for Janaury 10th and I will go unless something really really odd happens.

I have said before and I will say again I will not allow any terrorist to dictate the way I live my life in my free country.

I would still go. You can't live your life in fear. The only things that I could see perhaps creating a problem were if there was some national alert to not travel, or to not visit specific places (WDW, Washington DC, Las Vegas or other large travel destinations). Or if for some reason (I am not saying this will happen so don't freak out) the war were to end up coming onto American soil.

Perhaps my wife and I aren't quite as cavalier as the rest of you. We're willing to take more risks with our own lives than that of our son's. If we were at war, I'd be tempted to postpone a trip................... just being honest:D . I'm not concerned about the flights. I am concerned that WDW would seem a logical target for terrorists to make a statement.

I have no plans to go to WDW until 9/03, but if we invade Iraq in Jan., I might throw in a quick trip in Jan or Feb because I know WDW will be empty.

I would go. I agree with Eros that Disney World is a logical target, but that has been true for a long time. It is understandable to be nervous about this, but I don't think the risks are high enough to be concerned. Even if the terroists were to stike while you were there, rmember, DisneyWorld is a BIG place, the odds are that you would be nowhere near an attack if it happened.

It wouldn't stop me from going, unless there was a government warning against travelling.

There are probably many targets other than WDW that terrorists may consider - where would be 100% safe?

Yep, Id go! We went 2 weeks after 9/11. We were scheduled to fly out on 9/24, but ended up driving on 9/22. While I was afraid to fly(I always am, but even more so then), the reason we decided not to fly was more being afraid of getting stuck in an airport for who knows how long with a then 4 yo and 20 month old. Compared to that a 24 hour ride seemed easy...and it was. But anyway, we went and had the best trip ever! Im so glad we didnt cancel then. We did however, do a lot of going back and forth over what to do before we made our final decision. In the end I felt, if its my time, at least I will be at the happiest place on earth, with my family. What better way to go? Luckily, it wasnt my time. ;)

Hound, if you agree that WDW could be a likely target, then why would anyone choose to expose their children to even an incrementally greater risk than in Hometown,USA?????

Again, not to freak anyone out.....but I would be more scared to go now while the park is full of people. Terrorists are trying to get us now, war won't make a difference. Thank God for our national protection!!!!!! I am going in Feb. The major deterrent would be a possible drop in the stock market due to the onset of war.

NOW they start this! Last year I had some of the best offers in the world for the first week in January because people were afraid of travelling, this year everything's sold out! Even my son's friend's parents wouldn't let her come with us because of the "terrorists"...

January 3 falls right in the middle of my vacation and I WILL be there!

Thats a valid question. Yes, the fact the Disneyworld is a target may consititute an increased risk, But I feel that we expose children to greater risks than this everyday when we put them in a car and think nothing of it. Are your planning to keep your kids out of Walmart, or Shopping malls? They are targets too now. Everywhere is slightly more dangerous than it was 2 years ago, but only sightly. Depending on where you live, your kids may actually be safer at Disney World than at home.

I am not questioning your judgement here. I understand that you feel that the increased risks are worth keeping your family away and I respect that descision. I just feel that the risks are not that great and that we face greater risks every day in our normal lives, so I see no reason to stay away.

Thanks everyone for all of the replies. As of now I am not seriously considering cancelling the trip. But, after listening to the news I just wanted to get others opinions. If we are at war with Iraq by Feb 1st 2003 we will probaly go unless there is some sort of domestic travel ban in place. Thanks again to all.

If we do a preemtive strike against Iraq with the intention of removing their leader at the begining of Jan. The most intense part of the war would probably be over in less than a week. So to awnser your question, yes I would go in Feb.

We are flying to Orlando on January 2.

At this point, we are still going. I live in a major medical community, which is also listed as a possible terrorist hit.

It's so hard to know what to do!
