If they cancel is this possible?

I invited my in-law's to come to Disney with us next April to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday and they have tentatively accepted. There is a very slight chance my mother in-law won't get approved for the time off but most likely it won't be a problem. Here is how our points for their stay break down:

118 Points needed for a Studio at Kidani
We have 2 points left in our current UY (September)
116 Points to be borrowed from 2015 UY

We have not banked any points in this UY. If we end up having to cancel, will we be able to bank the points we borrowed? I realize that they will not go back to the 2015 UY and will be considered 2014 points but that said, would we be able to bank them? We will know well before the booking deadline of April 30th (and our trip will actually commence before then) so I think we can...but just want to check.

I'm not too worried about availability but I'd rather book something sooner than later just in case as it seems it's harder to get a room the closer it gets to the travel date.

Thanks everyone for your help!

You can't bank borrowed points. Both borrowing and banking are final transactions.

Once points are borrowed they are now stuck in that earlier use year. If you are not passed the 9 month window you may be able to use the borrowed points for your reservation (I'm assuming you're staying on current UY points) and bank those instead but no unfortunately borrowed points can't be re-banked.

Yes...we're using current UY points as well as some we banked (we're staying 12 nights, in-laws are only staying a week)

Thanks again for the help...there's very little chance they'll cancel so maybe I'll just book and hope for the best..,,hopefully it won't be an issue.

You can 'swap out' your current UY points used for your 12-night reservation for the banked/borrowed points used for your in-laws reservation if they need to cancel. You'll have to call member services to do that for you. You can then bank forward the current UY points that are released by the 'swap'.

Be aware, there is a situation where this doesn't work. If you own at more than 1 resort and you booked your 12-day reservation using the 11-month window and the weeks stay used banked/borrowed points are from a different resort.

What unit size for the 12 nights? If it's a 1 BR there are different ways to structure this that may be better and/or cheaper. If you already have a 2 BR, which I suspect is likely the case, and are adding the studio extra, just ignore this. Remember that reallocating to the other reservations is not guaranteed even when it's the same home resort and that some have lost reservations during reallocations such as this. It's still what I'd do but just so you're aware of the possibilities.

An April 2015 trip falls in your Sept 2014 UY. So if you use Sept 2015 points, you are borrowing them to make the trip. Those will be lost on Aug 31, 2015 if you cancel the trip and do not rebook another trip until after Sept 1, 2015.

If you are going to book them I would use all current UY points for their reservation and borrow the points needed for your own. That way if they do cancel you are still able to bank the points from their reservation into next year if you cancel before your banking window.

We're both in studios as it was the most economical use of points. Hopefully it won't be a problem to swap.

Thanks..I'm going to call MS to see if that can be done...We only own at AKV so no worries about points at a different resort.

Thanks for all the info/advice. I'm not a new DVC Member but it's the first time I had to worry about this.

A 2 BR for the 7 days would sure be a great option if you could swing it. If you got a lockoff you might not even have to move villas.
