If the VP steps down, who steps in?

I believe the president can appoint a new VP, but I think they go through a Senate confirmation hearing

If the VP steps down, and that is highly unlikely; the president can appoint anyone he wants to.

I think it's the Speaker of the House. Edited to add, I think that I am thinking of replacing a President if the Vice-President is unavailable.

A VP is appointed. I'm old enough to remember when Spiro Agnew resigned he was replaced by Gerald Ford, who then became President when Nixon resigned.

I think it's the Speaker of the House.

If the president and the vice president both would be incapacitated at the same time, the next person in line to take charge of the country is the Speaker of the House.

If anyone remembers Nixon's VP, Spiro Agnew resigned and Nixon appointed Gerald Ford as his new VP.

I think you posted this while I was editing my post. Thanks though. :)

Stepped down? He'll get rolled out of the Oval Office feet-first.

That makes sense. thank you for helping me to figure that one out.

I did a search on Yahoo and got this answer from Wikipedia.org:

Section 2 of the 25th Amendment provides that "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress." Gerald Ford was the first Vice President selected by this method, after the resignation of Spiro Agnew in 1974; after succeeding to the Presidency, Ford nominated Nelson Rockefeller as Vice President.

danacara, your youth and inexperience with life shines through at times when you made your nasty, sarcastic comments.

Ah, to be young again and know everything there is to know!;)

A good education doesn't give a person the ability to know when to be quiet I guess.

This comment seems totally out of place.

I don't understand the nastiness around here. I understand that the election we just survived was very devisive but that is no reason to be so nasty. Couldn't Danacara have meant that Cheney would not step down and the only way that the VP position would becaome available was if he should pass away while in office.

I for one choose the most benign meaning to something I read rather than jump to the most malignent. Without being able to see a person's facial expressions or body language or hearing the tone of voice a person is using it is near immpossible to assign anything bad to such a statement as posted by Danacara.

In an attempt to bring this back on topic and to provide a somewhat healthy debate :) .......

Does anyone else think that Cheney may not serve his entire term? Given his age (he's 63) and his health history, it's doubtful he will run for the Presidency in 2008. I wonder if he may resign in a year or two, citing health concerns. This would give President Bush the chance to appoint a VP and potential successor for 2008.

oh...dear...god...nooooooooo!

I believe he will step down at some point. He has stated he does not wish to run for the presidency and his stepping down would enable an up and comer to follow behind Bush. just my thought, who knows.

I wasn't trying to start a debate, I was just curious as to how a new VP is chosen if the current one steps down.

I believe, thanks to the posts, that I have an answer to that question now. Thank you for your help!

Sorry, "debate" probably wasn't the best choice of phrase and I should have said "discussion." :)
