If the no carryon rules don't go away how will that change your way of travel?

I don't think the new rules would force me to drive down, but I'd definitely drive to Buffalo and fly from there. I've got camera equipment that checking is just not an option with.

This thread seems to be taking a negative, downward turn so to get back on topic...
I'm not thrilled about not having a small carryone for bathing suits, toothbrushes etc. but it will not change my way of travelling. In my situation, the convenience of flying out of an airport an hour away far outweighs any pros of driving across the border just to be able to take a carryon bag. I can't imagine driving for 4 hours, possibly staying overnight in a hotel...... and then doing that in reverse upon return. As a single mom, it's just not an appealing option for me. JMO!

I am like that with my Disney World pins. In fact last Thursday when we flew home on WestJet from Tampa - Toronto, they wanted to see how much our carryon bags weight was and it's something that was never done before. Anyway my bag was 6lbs overweight and they said I might need to check it, however it would depend on what the TSA agent said before we got on the tram to security. Well I said they are to valueable and I would like to keep them with me, however the WestJet people in Tampa didn't care. Anyway the TSA agent looks at a specific area of the bag and says it's good to go through. Now I am not sure what it's weight was when we flew from Toronto, but the only additional things I packed in there was 4 new DVD's and an Xbox 360 game that I bought. Although those were packed in a seperate area of the bag away from my pins and that was the area of the bag that the TSA agent was looking at.

The carry-on rules, per se, won't change my travel plans. But the additional time and hassle to get through security at Pearson Airport certainly will. When I travelled in early December it took almost 90 minutes just to get through check-in, U.S. customs and immigration, and security. Now the airline is recommending people check in three hours before flight time.
If we had not already booked for March Break through Pearson, we'd be heading to Buffalo instead. And that's most certainly what we'll be doing when we head down in August. We'll be trading a one-hour drive for shorter lines, and cheaper fares as well.

tone.def I will not comment on yoru post because I agree certain countries should be on extra warning and those travellers checked more thoroughly. And I am sure you won't agree!

No because I'm not racist. You must get really scared when a brown man sits next to you on a plane.

And I don't agree that a canadian man who happens to be brown, lapsed-muslim and porn in pakistan 41 years ago and left 40 years ago should be forced into extra security line ups with his anglo-catholic fiance - born in Canada and their infant daughter, also born in Canada and who is being baptized catholic next month. All behaviour which is not consistent with being a "Crazy Mo" as they call them.

Would you agree that Irish people should be forced into extra security checks? They were a hot bed of terrorism up until 2001. I say force the Irish in too!

I hope you meant "born" not "porn" ....LOL

I'm not racist, I just agree that certain countries need more screening than others. I don't care what the countries are but if there is know terrorism acts than they need to do that. I have no idea what a "Crazy Mo" is:confused3

By the way....this thread was about carry-ons not what you started ranting about!

Whatever, you commented on it after I said I will be putting clean underwear in my purse, that's how carry on rules will affect me.

Whenever I hear things like the airlines saying get there 3 - 4 hours before I say to myself and others this question. Won't that just makes the lines even worse if everyone is told to arrive that early? I mean if someone has an 8:00 AM flight out of Toronto and US Customs doesn't open until 5:00 AM, those people would need to be there at 4:00 AM and think how long back the lines will be even before it opens.

Why do you have to bring all of your luggage onto the plane with you too???

It takes up way too much space, takes too long for everyone to get in their seats, and then getting off the plane you have to wait again for them to lug their big overstuffed carryon out of the overhead compartments.

Your luggage belongs under the plane.

It would seem that I would be bringing on all my luggage, but I'm not - I have 4 kids that need to be entertained. Otherwise, you would not be happy on that plane ride with us. Sitting still for a 9, 7, and 4 year old boy for 3.5 hours without their bag of toys and snacks will make for a very looong plane ride.
We leave Feb 1st, and I don't know what I'm going to do. Do the best I guess, and be a very flustered mom when we finally land.

And we have a 6:30am flight. We were planning on being there 4:30am, do you think we now need to go earlier??!!

Not sure of the new carry-on restrictions, I would assume that if a small purse is allowed why not a small (maybe see-through) bag from say a dollar store per child. This would allow you to pack a few snacks per child in each bags as well as some sort of activity. Maybe a box of crayons, a mp3 player, or a PSP. Maybe you could take one of those bags that fold down to nothing to put everything in once everyone has had their bag checked by security.

my concern is camera gear. I have planned - for 11 months, no less! - on getting to WDW with 2 DSLR cameras, 5 lenses, and all the necessary bits and pieces. I know "cameras" are on the list as being "excluded" from the restrictions - but to what degree? For example, laptops are allowed, but not in a case. With this amount of gear, I need a case, and checking it is NOT an option.

Here's how the new rules will affect us:

1) Fly from Detroit. Clear customs at the border. No restrictions (other than the usual) about what you can bring into the country. No change (for now, anyway) about what you can take on the plane with respect to carry-on luggage. Oh, wait, we already fly from Detroit. Never mind.

2) Rent an Owner's Locker. Keep often used items in storage down there so we don't have to transport or buy them. We presently have in our locker some beverages, toiletries, rain ponchos, peanut butter, coffee, wireless router, first aid kit, etc. As we're DVC owners we usually head down once a year and what we pay for our locker is less than the cost of checked luggage and/or buying the items each time we go. But as we already have the locker I guess there's no effect on us there, either.

Hmm, I guess the new rules (as they stand) will have limited impact on us - except maybe for longer waits at the airport.

Just wondering why the no carry on issue would make you drive?? I think it is great - you can still have a small personal bag that carries a book or ipod or your laptop.

I have a regular sized carry on. I like to bring a change of clothes, PJ, toothbrush and some basics incase my luggage doesn't arrive at the same time I do. It's happened twice. Flights get delayed, I make my connection, just, but luggage doesn't. I've been caught with nothing until the next day before on vacay, and it's not nice.
And some food on the flight is nice too, as it's a long flight from the west coast, and with my connection time, I doubt I'll have time to grab something at an airport, and for a 6 am flight, nothing at the airport is open yet.
