If the flattening isn't working is it time to face reality?

I'm wondering if you didn't read my original comment because guess what that's exactly what we were doing..moving away from the person :)
I read it. Additional breakdown was unnecessary.
We left that aisle quick as can be when it became appearant he wasn't keeping his distance
That would have been good information to have in one of the previous posts. Alternatively, hugging the opposite side of the aisle to get behind the employee, or circling back around through the next aisle to get behind the employee would have worked to prevent him from approaching your space.
Employees, when they can, need to maintain the distance as they are the ones coming in repeated contact
He. Was. Working. He was putting back merchandise or stocking shelves. He had items that belonged in the aisle you were in. Because how or where he was working interfered with your shopping, it should have been addressed with management.

Whatevs. You're just looking to argue and I just don't care to, enjoy the rest of your day :)

But hey, there are a half-dozen restaurants, from McDonalds to high-end seafood, serving take out and delivery in my town, and the governor says those are essential.
Of course they are essential. Not everyone is able to cook for themselves. If you're sick (or weak for any reason) and alone, cooking is difficult to impossible. Add to that maybe being the sole adult responsible for kids, and you can further see why they're essential. Even if it isn't a health issue, if you have to try to work at home all day with a child to also care for, adding cooking to the list can get overwhelming quickly, especially if you're working to a deadline.

Ok, maybe I should specify: How do we know if the numbers we are see reported are new cases since people started staying home? Median incubation period is 5 days (source), right? How long does it take to recover if untreated? Doesn't it depend on the individual?

So, the people who are tested today and are reported today... when did they get sick?

I mean, heck, West Virginia only started testing like 5 days ago, right?

People in New Orleans are waiting 5 days for results. The numbers there are about to explode. A friend of mine in pretty sure she has it. Docs are pretty sure. She’s well enough to treat at home. She’s been running fever for 12 days.

Louisiana number quadrupled in a few days. It’s going to look really scary later this week.

Oh my. The coming days are going to be so challenging.
I hope your friend starts to feel better soon.

Remember: The virus cannot spread by itself. People spread the virus.
So, if people would just stay at home, we can all stop this together.

It's really not that hard of a concept. It's the least intrusive, least invasive, least inconvenient thing one can possibly do to prevent a disease. If someone told you that the vaccine for pneumonia is to stay at home....wouldn't you comply?

Not at ALL costs. Which is the path we're going down now.

Interesting interpretation. Im "looking to" make non-retail-workers realize that a retail worker has assigned duties in a speific area within a specific time period and that because the employee must be where they are when they are doing what they are assigned, they might not be able to stop, or move away, or go somewhere else until there are no customers in their work aisle. sometimes it's up to the customer to adjust, or to complain to management.

NYC will be the example for the rest of US as to what works and what does not. They’re obviously not copying the playbook of China by locking down all ingress/egress. Whether the rest of the US learns from the pros/cons of US is to be seen...

There have been casual conversations among some in the medical community there as to whether it should be suggested that the healthy leave the area before hospitals have no more capacity to admit new critical patients. If the time comes to enforce a true lockdown with restricted passage in/out, those healthy will be effectively trapped inside. On the other hand, how will evacuees affect the spread of the virus to surrounding communities? As you’ve seen in the news, communities that were selected to receive infected cruise ship passengers responded with lawsuits.

If all non-essential businesses are closed, where are people going if not sheltering in place?

I'm a little confused why people need to basically be literally led by the hand to figure out what they should be doing right now. If everywhere people go is now closed except for the things people need to survive, it means they don't want people going anywhere!
I've been saying all along, here in western PA they are all going to Lowes to stock up on home improvement projects. Paint and lighting is big, as is flooring. You know, essential stuff.

My state, Massachusetts, isn't posting very high numbers but they aren't testing very aggressively. The news was just bragging about the new Drive In Testing facilities opening up, except you have to have been either 1.In China/Italy/South Korea within the past 3 weeks or in direct contact with someone with an active diagnosis 2.) Have both a fever AND a cough 3.) Have a prescription from your PCP.

Well, a lot of people aren't having both a cough and a fever. Some people are starting with diarrhea. Some people have chills. Some people have a low grade temp for a few days, which subsides. Some people have shortness of breath with no cough. And a lot of people have no Primary Care Physician, so they can't get a prescription for testing. And if you never test anyone and no one gets a diagnosis, you have sick people with mild symptoms walking around in the community, infecting others. My husband is an ER doc and he has been flooded with panicked people with no symptoms showing up to get testing, just to clear their minds. They are using up all their PPE on testing, not treatment.

I have been sick for about 5 days. My doctor's office said they don't do testing, it sounds like Covid-19 but since my symptoms were mild, just stay home, yada, yada, yada. If my shortness of breath progresses to respiratory failure, go to the ER. Well, wouldn't it be nice for me to know for sure? I have 3 kids. My husband will be going back to the hospital in a few days. Meanwhile people are so over-worked by the constant inflammatory news, that people are telling me how I ashamed I should be of myself for getting exposed, accusing me of trying to murder my neighbors by getting my mail with a fever.

So, we won't even know about flattening unless testing is applied in a consistent manner across the board.
Hope your family stays well. My sister is an ER nurse & told me tonight that they’re seeing another symptom, ppl coming in with a sudden loss of taste & smell & no congestion & they’re testing positive. They also have a fever.

Just because some people are taking advantage of hardware stores being open doesn't mean that it is not essential for those stores to be open. Stuff still breaks and we need a place to buy the items to fix things.

But yeah, I hope those people who are crowding the hardware stores for "non-essential" DIY don't end up ruining it for everyone. But then at the same time I guess I can't really blame anyone for wanting to use their stay at home time for some home improvement projects.

My sister is an ER nurse at the VA & said all she saw all day was ppl with Covid symptoms. They may not all test positive, but they all are good possibilities. My friend is an ER dr at UMC & he said it’s the same there. They’re exhausted from working around the clock. And the virus is not airborne, but it becomes airborne once the patient is on a vent. Both hospitals are having to reuse masks so they’re starting to worry about the integrity of them. Both my sister & friend feel like it’s only a matter of time before they have it. So that’ll be the next shoe to drop, when our healthcare providers are sick too.

Do other places have faster testing results?

I think we are doing a lot more testing than a lot of states too.

Hope your friend is ok! I’ve been running fever for just 5 days & I’m about to lose my mind! Mine is just a kidney infection & it’s getting better. But 12 days...awful!

I didn't say that these stores are not essential. They are. People need to fix things like refrigeration and stoves and hot water tanks. My ex works there and says you can't even walk through the store, almost shoulder to shoulder. People lined up around the corner at the paint counter.

As I've been saying, this social distancing has brought people physically closer to each other than ever.

As I said in another thread, a hospital near me reported a 50% rise in domestic violence and child abuse cases over the last week. As much as some would like to think so, this thing isn't all families bonding together and playing board games.
Communities that have experienced devastating hurricanes or wildfires or other natural disasters have reported similar findings.
These are difficult and stressful times. Few think this experience is all sweetness and light.

I'm in law enforcement. I can confirm this happens more often than folks realize. Some of our biggest domestic violence hotspots are Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I've been accused of fear mongering and spreading lies by people on these boards when I've brought up fears that this would happen. There are some that think people are all going to band together while we fight this. Realistically, forced isolation along with no jobs and no money is going to lead to an increase in violence.
