if someone wanted to visit your area what would you tell them not to miss?

jsmith hit some Colorado Springs must sees I will hit Metro Denver:

Red Rocks- whether there is a concert or not

Denver Center for Performing Arts-great buildings and great performance, both local and national tours

the Paramount Theater (my grandma used to go there to watch movies...it's now a great concert venue)

so many wonderful parks, trails

Coors Field (the rockpile are great seats!!)

16th Street Mall was one of the original outdoor malls and while it isn't what it used to be...it has some of the best restaurants in LoDo.

The Capital Building

either of the breweries

We have found that we love finding day trips of all of the great little towns around us.

In Colorado Springs I will add the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

I would suggest that they not miss the next bus back home!

I'm not kidding.

Ok, I guess til the bus comes, they might want to visit the Vanity Fair outlets. That's all.

I like living here because it always makes me SOOOO enthusiastic about going on vacation! I do spend a lot of money on gas.

I was sure somebody would have already responded from my area, but so far, no dice! So here goes:

-I live in the birthplace of the country so I'd definitely suggest seeing the Liberty Bell, the Constitution Center, Elfreth's Alley (the oldest continuously occupied street in the country), Independence Hall, Betsy Ross' house and Franklin Court (the site of Benjamin Franklin's home which now houses a museum). You wouldn't believe how many native Philadelphians have never taken the time to visit these local gems.
-For culture, you can't beat the Philadelphia Museum of Art (home of the famous "Rocky steps"!). A beautiful building which houses some incredible pieces. Also, the Franklin Institute, a museum which encourages a hands-on approach to science and also houses an IMAX theater, a great planetarium and a giant reproduction of the human heart which you can actually walk through!.
-For local color, you must visit South Street and Penn's Landing. Eat at a local cheesesteak place (NOT Pat's or Geno's which to me is strictly tourist stuff, but rather a more neighborhood place) or the Italian Market or the Reading Terminal (lots of local specialties).
-For the shopping fanatic- you can't miss King of Prussia Mall! Any store you can think of can be found here and it is a true shopper's paradise!

no, please go on! This is why I started this thread. There is so much to learn and I love hearing what makes an area special!

You asked for it:lmao:

Gotta spend a day in Weinheim! Lovely, lovely old town with classic timber built houses. Spend a couple of hours wandering the old town area and little shops. Stop mid morning for a coffee and pastry and sit overlooking the two Weinheim castles on the twin hills. Then head into the Botanical gardens for another hour or two before lunch. Have lunch and then spend the afternoon enjoying the lovely trails and shaded paths in Schloss Park.:goodvibes

Play at the Ketterwald ropes courses in Speyer. For a one time fee (18 EUros for an adult) you get fitted with a harness and instructed on how to safely navigate the courses and then let loose. Each course takes about 30 minutes to complete. Course one is only a foot or two off the ground at any given point. Course two is no higher than a typical play ground structure. Course three is up around 20-25 feet. Course four is in the 40-50 feet range (and is as high as i have gone). 5 and 6 are waaaaaay up there:eek: This place is a lot of fun:woohoo:

While your in Speyere have a picnic along the Rhein and pop into Sealife Aquarium for a bit.

Visit the fantastic Landesmuseum in Mannheim. A huge science museum with tons of hand on exhibits. Lots of great things to interest adults and kids. While in Mannheim see the largest boroque palace ever built from the outside (the tour is not that great) an enjoy the fountain area at the end of downtown with the water tower.

Spend at least one summer evening in a beer garden. Drink a radler (hald beer hald sprite). I don't even like beer but it is part of the experience:upsidedow

In Hiedelberg hike up past the scenic outlook of the Philospher's Walk that most tourists stop at. Keep heading uphill until you come to the huge outdoor ampitheater built by the Nazis for propoganda rallies and feel the creepy sense of history. Keep going further up and fin the monestary ruins.
Afterwards stop at the cafe in the main plaza in Neunhiem (neighborhood of Heidelberg on that side of hte river) and enjoy the best corsaints EVER.

Also in Heidelberg--spend an afternoon at the park along the Neckar river. Try to go on a weekend. Chances are you will see a beach volleyball tournament, a rowing tourney in the river, etc. Walk along the length of the park and enjoy people watching and relaxing.

Visit the local wineries/vinyards and taste:rolleyes1 Also stop at at least one hole on the wall bakery per day and get one of over 450 kinds of bread we have here.

Okay, everything I have listed in both posts is withing 30 minutes of my house. One thing further out which I pretty must insist every visitor do is go to the prettiest town I have ever been in. It is in Stasbourg, France--about an hour and a half south of here on the German/French border.

Love it thanks! You all have some great ideas!

If someone else has posted from your area go ahead and post more!
Everyone has a different perspective so Im sure different things will come up or at least a different opinion of it :)

SueJai, that was how I felt when I lived in Calgary, bu it was more about the company than anything else :rotfl:

Destin/Fort Walton Beach area

  • Walk around Seaside where the Truman Show is filmed
  • The beaches - take your pick. We like Henderson or Grayton.
  • Sandestin - gives the WDW resort feel when we need a weekend away
  • Panama City Beach for the new Pier Park outdoor area with a Borders bookstore.
  • A little further away is Mobile which has a great battleship to tour

Our favorite day is a hike at Grayton followed a drive through Seaside followed by a couple hours at Pier Park and then a drive home, stopping at Fresh Market for great food to bring home.

I think our area is a great place to visit but an even better place to live.

I live in Albuquerque, NM I will have people take the tram up to the mountains, maybe check out the petroglyphs, depending on time of year have them go to balloon Fiesta Park.
I would probably have them go to Carlsbad, NM and check out the caverns. maybe have them visit Roswell, NM to check out UFO museum.

Mote Aquarium
The Red Barn (huge flea market)
The Manatee Viewing Center (only in the winter)
Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary
Tampa Zoo

Well, my first would be Siesta Key Beach.... Which has been voted #1 in the top 10 beaches in the country, and the world for its sand.

Going to the Holy Trinity Church would one thing

Holy Trinity Church

Although the south chancel wall, with its corbel table, complete with three round headed windows date from the 11th century and the west tower dates from the 1170’s, most of the church is 13th century. The tower at one point had a spire, but in 1660 this collapsed, doing severe damage to the nave.

The church is an incredible 173 feet long, making it the longest nave in the UK

[edit] Misericords

Holy Trinity has seven, late 15th century misericords, along with on from the 1980, which is a floral decoration in memory of Doris Willcox who died in 1974.

Not to mention the Bone Crypt

http://www.rothwellholytrinity.co.uk/The Bone Crypt.htm

Then there is the United Reform church built in 1725 and newly the Rothwell and Desborugh Heritage centre which is always worth a visit. Andd last but not least the Market Hall built by Sir Thomas Tresham in 1578.

Could you name more fun places? I'm still new to the area. I posted above. Thanks!

If you really must come here, then I guess you should probably visit Fairhaven. It's got lots of little shops and stuff. There's some parks and Mt. Baker if you ski. Honestly though, just keep going right up I-5, go to the Peace Arch, show your passport and visit Vancouver, there's wayyyyyy more to do up there. It's only 45 more minutes and you'll be wayyyyyyyyyyyy happier.

Yes, dolphinrescuegirl, you had me confused with dolphingirl47, who works at Mote Marine in Sarasota.

I have lived in the area for a while myself. You named some very good places in your post (other than the Red Barn....personally, I wouldn't send anyone there as there are definitely better flea markets in other parts of the state and even in the St. Pete area.) I would suggest Ringling Museum, the Antique Car Museum, Selby Gardens, and MOSI (Science Museum in Tampa.) When it's in town (March and April), Tampa also has a great Renaissance Festival. I also have some suggestions for restaurants...let me know if you'd like those.

I also volunteer at Mote in their dolphin and whale hospital. I LOVE it!! I think we've talked about Mote a bit on here as well.

Any ideas are appreciated including restaurants! We went to MOSI on $5 day and are glad we didn't pay full price. We were both very suprised at how BAD it was!! We've seen lots better at other musuems. I would like to go to Ringling eventually.

I've only ever seen the IMAX films at MOSI and that was always a fun evening. I haven't seen the rest of the museum at all.
If you like seafood, I would suggest Barnacle Bill's and Anna Maria Oyster Bar. If you like steak, Cody's has wonderful steaks plus they have a happy hour until 7 (or all night at the bar.) The happy hour until 7 includes everything but bottled beer at 2 for 1. At the bar after 7, it's well drinks, wine, and draft beer for 2 for 1. They also have a great bar menu with a "bar burger" that is a quarter pound steak burger for only $1.99...cheese is only 15 cents and fries are only 50 cents. Pizza, I would suggest Siciliano's or a bar called the Banana Factory actually has great pizza with a crispy crust and their 16 inch pizza is only $8. Mexicali is good for Mexican food. Caragiulo's is probably the best for Italian, although Demetrio's is also excellent and less expensive than Caragiulo's.

Hmmmm Long Island, NY

-An hour by train into downtown Manhattan and everything to do there
-15 minutes from the beach (with REAL waves)
-An hour drive to the vinyards (wine tasting) and farm country (apple picking, berry picking etc.)
-Cradle of Aviation Museum
-Shopping (many malls with higher end department stores)
-Splish Splash Water Park in summer (seedy and gross now but up there on the lists of best water parks)
-Adventureland if you have kids with you

I'm sure there is more... we just get really bored here :rotfl2:

Great thread:thumbsup2 We find things to love about everywhere we have lived (I MUST second Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield VIllage if ever in teh Detroit area--we miss that so much)--and we are always surprised by how many long time locals either do not know about the places or "have'nt been since the 6th grade school trip" and are missing the great things in their own backyard.

I live in Heidelberg, Germany where EVERYONE knows to visit the castle, cathedral, old city bridge and philosopher's walk. I would add that lesser known but fabulous things are:
*The Pallatinate museum in old town
*Old Student jail
*Gardens of nearby Schwetzing Palace (180 acres of lovliness)
*Hang out on the pedestrian bridge to Nuenheim and watch the barges go through the locks
*Bike through the fields to the lovely old walled city of Ladenburg
*Have coffee in the square in Speyer and play mini golf in the shade of the cathedral

oh gosh--I guess I should stop there is just too much to list:rotfl2:

My family lives in Ladenburg! I am dying to take a trip over there. I hear its beautiful from my Grandma & Mom.

:rotfl: It always seems like theres so much to do, isn't there? Somehow we constantly find ourselves asking...ok...what should be do? Although Manhattan is so close, you can't really ever be too bored.

We do have Teddy Roosevelts house. That is pretty cool. We went there on field trips in elementary school. He sure did like to hunt!
