If someone gives you a $50 gift card that can be used anywhere (a visa gift card, for instance) with the expectation that you will use it on yourself, to buy something "fun" that you normally would not splurge on, but your natural instinct is to use the $50 for sensible things, what would you do?
Would you use it for something fun that you normally would not spend $$ on, such as clothing or a trinket of some sort that you like but simply can not justify spending the $$ on?
Or would you just hang onto it and use it for groceries and gas and paying your cel phone bill?
My mom & dad randomly gave Chris and I (and they did the same for my brother & his DW) about $400 worth of household cleaning supplies, paper goods, light bulbs, personal care stuff like tylenol, (and other basic medications) and toothpaste and brushes etc. yesterday. My dad's idea. He filled a HUGE outdoor trash barrel full of stuff. Then they literally filled up another room of their house w/ stuff that did not fit in the barrel (fold up lawn chairs, computer paper and ink cartridges etc.)
Words can't even express how grateful we are. (They have never
done anything like this and I have no idea what brought it on. To thank them, I am going to have my moms favorite photo of mine done up HUGE and have it nicely framed as a thank you gift.)
But in the middle of it all, was a gift card for $50. One for me and one for my sister in law , Kate.
My mom told us those were for us girls to use for OURSELVES. She really stressed the "use it for something for YOU" part. And I don't think she meant, use it for a weeks worth of groceries or gas.
Chris thinks I should use it to buy myself something nice that I would never buy, like a few of the $15 fairy figurines I had been eyeing at Noah's Collectibles, or some nice fall clothes.
But the responsible adult in me keeps saying, use it to pay off your cel phone bill next month or use it for the next few gas fill ups.
I think my mom would be sad if she knew I used it for boring stuff though.
