Okay this is a REALLY dumb question but - if you buy a cheaper MP3 player (instead of an IPOD) how do you buy music for it? Am I to understand that itunes only works for IPODS??
we bought DD13 a philips MP3 player last year for her birthday, and she LOVES it. we buy music from walmart.com and amazon.com. honestly, i don't know if you can buy music from iTunes for a non-iPod, we've never tried.
As far as I know, i tunes is for apple related products, like i pods. You can buy CDs and transfer them to your computer, then to your mp3 player. There are also other sites to purchase music from like amazon, rhapsody, etc. Usually, whatever mp3 player you have will come with a flyer of some sort of place that sells music, if you want to by it online. I just buy CDs and transfer to the computer then to my ipod.
It's simple....you download from Itunes. Then once it is in your library, right click the song & click "Create MP3 Version". Once it is an MP3, it can be placed on any MP3 player. But as others have posted, amazon, walmart & many others have sites where you can buy songs that are already in mp3 format. Merry Christmas & enjoy your new toy!
Amazon is often cheaper and when you buy you can select it either to be saved in iTunes or Windows Media Player.
I have an Ipod so I do use Itunes but got a REALLY good deal on some mp3 players for my kids ($4.99). Windows Media Player will let you create playlists just like Itunes and will recognize your device and sync (again like Itunes). I have 2 separate big music libraries on my computer but it's not a hassle at all.

I have a sansa MP3 player and we just bought dd an ipod. If I buy from itunes songs for dd's ipod then can i convert it to mp3 version or is it one or the other only? I'd hate to buy the same music in two different versions.

We mostly buy from Amazon because I don't like Apple's business practices. But dd13 does have an iPod, while the rest of us have Sansa Fuzes. As a pp said, you can buy from iTunes and make an mp3 copy, and if you buy from Amazon, it will work on an iPod as well as the Fuzes.
How about downloading videos? Can those be used on non-Apple players too? We gave our son the 8 gb Sansa Fuze for Christmas (loving the $50 BF sale!) and he'd like to put videos on it. I haven't been able to devote time to figuring it out as my daughter has an iPod and does it on iTunes.
I have a Creative Zen V Plus mp3 player and I love, love, love my Rhapsody To Go subscription. It's $9.99 a month for unlimited downloads to one device (so maybe not the best choice for a big family with several players)...but I also keep all my playlists on my computer so I can play right from there, too -- it's in the kitchen so very convenient to where I'm usually working. I've just been quite satisfied and in looking around, I've not found anything else that would work as well for me.
Before DD14 and DBF had the iTouches they have now, DD14 and DD11 both had Sansa music players. DD14 got her Touch has an 8th grade graduation gift and because her Sansa was broken beyond repair. But DD11 still uses her Sansa with no problems and we get music from iTunes all the time. iTunes, Amazon, Wal-Mart....we've used them all and have no problems putting music on anything, from the Touch, to the Sansa, to our phones, they convert with no problems.
