If my car sounds funny when I accelerate, what could be wrong?

My 98 Honda Civic in the last month or so has been making a really wierd noise when I press down on the gas, almost like a low moaning sound! What could be wrong? I hate to call the mechanic without knowing what even to tell them is wrong!

turn up the radio, it will be fine

Gosh...I know what you mean! Serously I hate going to the repair place and try to start making the smae noise. Plus then you can seriously get taken!

Good luck!

when was the last time you had a oil change? Mine was the same way until my engine blew up. I was on 40,000 miles without an oil change. Hey I'm a girl. How am I suppose to know these things.

YIKES! I WILL HAVE TO DOUBLE CHECK. IT COULD NEED AN OIL CHANGE TOO. I CAN'T BE WORRYING ABOUT THESE TYPES OF THINGS :-)

Please don't give the rest of us girls a bad reputation like that! Some of us know how to care for our cars!

Take a basic auto shop class or read a book about how to care for your auto. Better yet, read your owner's manual (why does no one read those things???) You'll be much better off for it.

Hey... have you checked your tire pressure lately? Take an interest in your vehicle - it will pay off in the end. ::yes::

Ooops... almost forgot the OP's question! Mechanics are good at figuring things out based on the sounds they make. They'll be able to figure your problem out. It could be something like a bad valve, but could be something in the drive train. I honestly don't know what a moaning sound would be from, but your mechanic will be able to figure it out. I'm sure even if they can't recreate the sound, they'll have some good ideas about where to start looking for the problem.

Best of luck. Hope it's not an expensive repair. ::yes::

I have owned a few really old cars in my short lifetime. The problem was ALWAYS exhaust when I heard noises on acceleration!

You may have a tiny hole somewhere in your exhaust system. One time, I got lucky, two pipes were simply coming apart where they joined. That was a quick fix. Other times were not so easy....

That's my guess. Let me know if I'm right!:D

Good luck!

Is the sound even louder when you make a turn? I had a similar problem last summer and it turned out I was extremely low on power steering fluid!

thank you for posting this, you beat me to it. Gender is no excuse for not caring for your car.
Yes, I do read the owner's manual and I do know how to do stuff on the car, like tune ups, air in the tires, oil replacement, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid, etc.
comments like this send the woman's movement back WAY too far.

I am better at taking car of my car then my husband is of his... My car goes in every 3 months for an oil change and once a year for a tune up (unless I sense something is wrong before hand), twice a year for the tires to be checked, rotated and aligned.

Good luck on finding the problem!

I was gonna say exhaust too, but I think we need more info. Is the noise ONLY when pushing harder on the gas? Is it a rumbling sound? You saind it's a moaning sound, is it constant or does it get worse/better depending on what you do? I'm certainly no automobile expert, but I've had my fair share of problems (no,not because I'm a girl, rather because I had an old car that was on it's last legs) so I tend to know about funny car noises.

tricia.
