If Milk Is Sealed, How Does It Leak

..and would you still drink it?

I had a new container (plastic 1/2 gallon jug) of milk laying on its side in my company refrigerator. It was laying on its side for 2 days and had not been opened yet. I picked it up this morning and there was a little "puddle" under it. Hmmmm....I thought, it hasn't even been opened. So, I ripped off the plastic strip and lifted the cap. You could see the vacuum release, so I guess it was sealed. But how did it leak out? And if it's not airtight, is it okay to drink? I did use it, by the way.

I would have used it, also. Must not have been a good seal.

Reminds me of a story that I heard years ago about a nursing mother who was at the grocery store without her baby. She was walking along and another shopper told her that her milk was leaking. Of course she quickly put her arms over what she thought were her leaking breasts, only to realize that it was the carton of milk in her cart that had a leak and was dripping on the floor. :rotfl:

Too funny!!!

Yes, the milk did not smell or taste bad but it just kind of freaks me out that it can leak like that when I'm led to believe it has an airtight seal.

It doesn't help that I've got an upset stomach now either...

i'm not sure what kind of top you have on the milk you bought, but if it's the screw kind it's not airtight and it can leak.

I don't think milk has an airtight seal, that why it has such a short shelf life. The caps are just plastic, there is no vacuum sealing on them. I would drink it...no problems, as long as it didn't smell bad.

I have also had the gallon jugs of water leak when on the side.

It's the kind you get at Giant. Not really a screw top but you just kind of push down on the top and it locks on. When you remove the strip, it sort of peels off versus the kind that snaps off.

I have always wondered about that too. I bought a half gallon of milk last week that had a sell by date of yesterday on it. I didn't open it until yesterday, and it was sour! :confused3

i guess giant in va has a different distributor than in md - cause ours are screw on's. :teeth: i'm not sure about that kind of top, but i know for sure the screw on type is not airtight.

That's really not airtight, per se. It might seem like there's a seal there, but it's just a regular plastic lid snapped in place.

I've seen some that leak out of the seams. Usually I try to look for a dry jug on a dry shelf in the dairy case. Occasionally, I've brought one home that leaked, by accident. I usually immediately tranfer the milk to another gallon rubbermaid container (that I purchased several years ago just for this purpose).

I actually bought this milk this past Sunday. It stayed in my home refrigerator for 2 days with no leaks (it was upright). I then took it to work and had to lay it on its side because there was no room. So I guess it was leaking from the lid. I have it upright now and it is fine. I just had some odd notion that milk was airtight and was concerned that this container wasn't. I guess it's okay.

I have some Giant choco milk, which is not screw on. When I purchase screw-on lids I make sure the lid is on tight before putting it in my cart since I've had them tip in my van lots of times. I usually buy my milk at Sam's and Costco.
