If I rent points, can we pool hop?

Or is that for members only?

No. Pool hopping is for members only, staying on points. Your room key will not have DVC member printed on it, hence it can not be used for pool hopping.

The official answer to your question is no. However, since you are staying on points, you will most likely get a resort ID that says "member" on it. If so, that may be enough to pool hop. Some posters have reported that the CMs are asking to see both a resort ID and a DVC member's card before allowing you to enter. This is especially true at SAB.

I just rented points two weeks ago for our stay and our cards said DVC member. So the day we went to mini golf when I paid using the room card, they said "Oh you are DVC you get a discount." I didn't ask for it, but I didn't refuse it :) They also get me the discount on the park pases I bought on checkin.

To elaborate further, when you check in they will ask you for both a driver's liscence and a credit card. Hence, your room key will not have 'DVC Member' printed on it, as you rented the points and you will not match the name in which the points are registered. Now, if you are a DVC member, and rented the points from another member, you will get DVC Member status, and you will be able to pool hop.

So why did Mike's cards say DVC member? I'm corn-fused :D

I don't have on in front of me, but I'm pretty sure that when you make reservations for another, renting or not, THEIR name appears on the confirmation and the reservation, even though the confirmation form is mailed to the owner.

Thus, the ID check at check in would work.

Somewhere in the documents is says that members are supposed to tell MS if they are making a "rental" reservation, but I don't know if that information is passed along to the resorts, or if they pay attention to it.

From the Member Guidelines:

"When a Member uses his or her Vacation Points to reserve a Vacation Home on behalf of a non-Member, and the Member does not charge any rental or other fees to the non-Member for the Vacation Home, the non-Member may be eligible for Member Priviledges and benefits that a Member would normally receive during his or her stay in a Vacation Home. Member priviledges and benefits cannot be extended to Non-Members who rent Vacation Homes from Members."

But DVC has no way of knowing if you paid the member or not, so they may assume that you are a non-paying guest of the member and give you the card with "DVC Member" on it. From what I've heard, this is usually the case.

hmmm...thanks for the info, Dis-friends :)

Debbie,

Yes thanks for that info. so that means if I were to make a reservation for my mom or brother as a gift (they DON'T pay me) they should get all the member benefits? it is ONLY people RENTING who "should" not get the member benefits. Am i reading that right?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, that's my take on it. We have given trips to relatives several times, and they have taken advantage of the benefits.

I always tell MS when making the ressie that it is NOT a rental so there is no confusion.

sorry, I didn't understand that the original question pertained to gifted points, (ie: non-rented).

It didn't, the original qustion was about rented points. The discussion just morphed into talking about the differences with rented and gifted points.

No problems here,

Mike

And no matter what, unless you specifically call MS and tell them that you are renting, and even then they may not be able to do it correctly, the room key WILL SAY MEMBER.

I have made reservations in a non-member's name. The key that they get says "member"

So I just want to be sure I'm clear on this. We are going with my parents (gifted, not rental) who are DVC members and staying in 2 separate studios. They are coming home on a Wednesday and we are staying through till Sunday. Will it say "member" on our cards as well? And will we still be able to pool hop after they are gone?

Sorry, they're new members and not sure how everything works.

DVCDAVE reports what is the strict interpretation of the rules and frankly, has not been followed by DVC. I've rented points to non members, told them it was a rental and the renter's cards still said member and they got member benefits. The reality is that anyone who stays on points will likely get the member benefits other than those that specifically require the member themself to be present. SAB cannot require a DVC card and a room key that says member too because there are non members who will be staying on points that have legitimate options for pool hopping. I also suspect that most people don't take their DVC card and room card with them to the pool.

have rented points and had them put into our account to make eservation we needed. So I can pool hop on the days the I use my points but not days I used the rentals. On days whe we used a little of both only half the family can go.

LOL - Just kidding around.

Just wanted to add that they do put "member" on keys for rooms booked with a rental. When I rented this summer I specifically told guest services that we were not members and had rented points. My room key said DVC Member.

Oh, Zurg, you're such a comedian :D Thanks again for replying everyone...my curiosity is satisfied. Dean your point re: non-members staying on points who have a legitimate opportunity to pool hop was appreciated~
Thanks again,
Wendy
