If I buy magic bands online, how does that work?

I know standard solid colored bands come with my resort stay. But if I want a character magic band, how does that work? Can I link it in MDE, or will I have to wait until arrival?

You can link it in MDE

It has a code on the underside. Go into MDE, select magic bands/cards, enter the code on the magic band, select the person you want to link it to, you're set

It's super easy and takes about 30 seconds
