have reservations for a flight in late november. just wondering if the decide to cancel...will continental notify me? or do i have to keep calling? also if they cancel will they try to fit me on another plane for the same day? i would think this would effect my hotel reservations? thanks

I expect it depends on the airlines; this hasn't happened to me often, but when it did, the airlines usually did call; not always in as timely a fashion as I would have liked though. I would probably use something like expedia or the airline web site to check on the flight from time to time, and then 2 or 3 weeks before, call (if you haven't heard anything).

Frontier just cancelled both the flights that we had in December: Denver to Orlando and then return. I noticed it before they had a chance to call (expedia notified me that there was a change in our itinerary), so I called Frontier. They had rebooked us on a different outbound flight earlier in the day (no problem); the return flight they booked us on returning a day earlier, since all flights on the day we had were cancelled - I asked to be booked on a return flight a day later, rather than come back a day early - no problem.

I think the key things are, if this happens to you, try to be calm and if possible, try to be flexible.

I know the person I talked to at Frontier was very happy that I wasn't angry and was willing to be flexible.

yes you should be notified. make sure they have the correct nbr to contact you and give an alternate if possible.

I called my airline the other day to clear up some misconceptions I've been reading online. They told me they would call me if our flight was cancelled or changed. I'm sure I'll still call and check a few weeks before to verify and find out any special "rules".

We've also been looking into driving in case our flight is cancelled. I know driving isn't for everyone, but we decided to try it just in case. We feel like you almost have to have some sort of back up plan with airlines talking about cancelling a certain percentage of flights.

I would call your airlines now and just confirm their policy on cancelled flights AND check into alternate transportation in case the flight is cancelled.

Good luck with your trip!

This may be a silly question but if the airlines cancel your flight do you have the option of a refund or just taking the flight they offer? I would rather fly, I do not like long car trips at all, but would like to know my options. We are to travel the same week American takes over TWA and I wonder if that will affect which flights American cancels if they must cancel some. Thanks!:D

seashoreCM, thanks for the link to the great tips! I'll definitely be reading through all of them.

Disneycrazymom, I wasn't aware that American was taking over TWA flights in November. That really worries me since we're flying that week also.

B3LM, I think they officially take over on Dec. 1. I hope it will have no effect on us. The American flights that I have found are not non-stop. I really do not want to change planes, I really want to fly direct. Guess we will see what happens. (BTW did you get Cindy's?)
