If assigned an exit row seat, why need to check in with agent?

I know they need to go over what you would need to do, but I figured they just did that after you were seated. Why is the reason you have to check in with an agent if you picked the exit row seat?
 
To make sure that:

You are not too young.
You are not disabled.
You are not traveling with someone who is too young.
You speak enough English to help with an emergency evacuation.
 
I speak English and am not disabled, but I am 55!! Hope that's young enough! LOL
 
What airline was it? I've sat in exit seats many times and never had to check in with the agent. The flight attendent asked the questions on the plane.

Yeah, you'll be fine :teeth: "Too young" means at least fifteen or sixteen. By the way, in addition to the conditions posted by NotUrsula, passengers seated in the exit row must be able and willing to assist in an emergency. Also, passengers using a seat belt extender can't sit in the exit rows because the extra belt length might get in the way of panicky, exiting passengers.
