IEP accommodations--anyone know? UPDATE

You are trying to compare students with a disability to her son who the OP stated has uncontrolled ADD. Keeping up with something like a laptop can be very difficult for people with ADD.

sorry but if he can attend regular HS classes he can be taught to take care of a lap top ADD or not.

I can NOT believe there are people out there jealous of special ed students... the world has gone mad this week I tell you... Are you jealous of cancer patients on your insurance as well? I mean they use up more money than you (a general you for the healthy folks) do and cause your rates to go up...

It really is sad. My daughter had ADHD and sensory problems and does not have an IEP. However, I certainly understand the need for these resources much more than I did before I gave birth to a child who struggles daily with things that many of us assume are easy tasks.

Were are you getting that a meeting costs thousands and thousands of dollars?

How much an hour do think Psychologists, therapists, administrators, teachers make? multiply all those by the meeting time, throw in travel time, add the time for writing reports and it will easily reach into the thousands.


If there is a computer in the room then yes he should be able to use it. But I think some rooms don't have them in high school. In fact most of ours don't other than the teachers.

I'm sure you do it is what every parent wants for their child but I don't understand what this has to do with this. If you thought I meant you personally I was actually referring to the OP. There is a very simple solution to the problem that could end the problem tomorrow but the OP is more concerned with being right and getting everything she should than with simply solving the problem.

Send in the lap top, problem solved.

They have a very simple solution to the problem but they don't want to solve the problem they want to make a point and that is what I find crazy. are you more worried about your child or proving you were right?

I am doing what is best for my son- so he can become a high functioning, well rounded, educated adult member of society. I dont' think the OP is trying to make a point either- she just wants the school to do what it is legally bound to do for her son's education.

uh contracted means paid it comes out of somewhere and if they weren't at meetings they could be doing something else or not be being paid so many hours.


Using the teachers computer could be a violation of privacy laws that everyone on here are so quick to spout. It would be very easy for him to access things he shouldn't.

And you don't seem to understand that reasonable does not have the same meaning for kids with a disability. As I said, maybe keeping up with a laptop sounds reasonable to you because it is easy for you. For a student with ADD, it is not easy and not necessarioy reasonable.

I'm sorry but I do not believe this for a minute. At 16, if this kid's ADD is that out of control that he can not keep his backpack with him, he needs more help than the school simply giving him a laptop. Come on! This kid is 2 years away from adulthood and he can't keep track of his backpack and it is all due to ADD? If that is truly the case, he needs some serious medication adjustments or he is going to be living at home the rest of his life. A 6 year old with ADD losing his backpack? That I would buy. A 16 year old? Nope, sorry. This seems like a big 'ole excuse to me.

most of these things are not "offered" to us because the school is nice its because of the law and we fight for them.. if you dont like what your school is offereing YOUR child fight.. why would it be any different for you than us? if you think you need more teachers and funding.. fight for it.. I said I did for my general ed son this year.. I did more fighting for him than my sped daughter..

Unfortunately, I have a great deal of personal experience with ADD. I know it is a very real problem but I firmly believe too many people use it as an excuse.

So I should have allowed my DD to remain in a school district that refused to provide what she needed that resulted in her having surgery?

Or should I have allowed them to pull all of the services because one of staff members decided to google the name of the disease and determined that DD had outlived her life expectancy?

I would think that the IT dept at the school district should be able to do a pretty good job. If someone wanted to hack in, they wouldn't need a school computer to do it so it's not a valid argument.

DD teaches middle school, mostly 8th grade. Why?

That's the problem, generalizing. IEP stands for Individual Education Plan. If it were general, it would have to be changed to GEP.
