IEP accommodations--anyone know? UPDATE

I know of a child with vision problems that needs individual music and an individual stand in orchestra that gets both without an IEP. the teacher works with her. she also has to sit in certain spots in rooms to be able to see, again the school works with her. Using her own stand and music is no different than using his own laptop just to write with.

I also know another child with a medical problem that can either go to his first morning class or do the work on the computer from home or go to the class at another time if he needs to and he does not have an IEP. He was also given another set of books to keep at home so he doesn't have to carry them. the school has worked with the family.

Actually I find it hard to believe that the high school teachers don't want things typed anyway.

Well then your state should not be requiring the use of the calculators. If it is part of their curriculum then they should be providing it just as they provide textbooks. In NYS school districts are now required to buy the calculators for exactly that reason.

In my town, if the school bought calculators then some other area would be cut. Local aid from the state is down and no overrides are being passed so cuts have already been made.

I chuckle when people talk about it being Federal or State aid. Federal and State aid is still money that we all pay into. There isn't some magical money tree; it is just a different pocket that the money is coming out of.

No common sense says to use his own laptop and not get it on an IEP.

that would be the smart and money saving method,no it is easier right to pay thousands of dollars to have specialists sit in a meeting to come to the same conclusion a 5 minute conversation with the principal could handle. Yeah that makes a lot of sense and a good use of money.......

Just curious. How do you know that these students don't have an IEP or 504?

The student with vision problems only has them in orchestra or are all of her teachers making accommodations?

What happens if he gets a new 1st hour teacher that will not allow this?

Actually, common sense says to allow him to use one of the computers that is already in his classrooms.

Again, I don't think that the OP is asking for a laptop. She just doesn't want her son to have to bring his own to school every day.

What is so wrong with allowing him to use a computer that is already there?

You are assuming that everyone is reasonable- WRONG. My son's math teacher got quite an awakening in my son's 504 meeting last week. The school psychologist laid it right out on the line and the teacher is NOW making the accomodations that were already in place. Sometimes it takes somebody with a lot of initials after their name to make things happen.

This is BY FAR the most disgusting thing I have ever read on these boards. I can't imagine sitting there and hearing that come out of the mouth of someone who was supposed to be helping my child. :headache: HOW did you control yourself????:worship:

Believe me, it was all that I could do. This was shortly after DD being diagnosed. It was also the main reason that when we got the diagnosis, we did not want to share the name of the disease with the district. Knowing the name of the disease would not change the needs that DD has. It was also a very newly named disease in humans and at the time, if you entered it into google, you got a grand total of 6 links. Since then, there has been considerable research and the life expectancy is into adulthood.

Our experience with SpEd is one of the main reasons that my two older DD chose to enter the field. DD#1 graduated in Dec with a degree in SpEd and started her first permanent teaching job in Aug and DD#2 is a junior in college also majoring in SpEd.

but isn't common sense to try first? before spending thousands and thousands of dollars on a meeting?

They have a very simple solution to the problem but they don't want to solve the problem they want to make a point and that is what I find crazy. are you more worried about your child or proving you were right?

You really don't have a clue do you? There is NOTHING I wouldn't give for my son to be "normal" and have friends, and play sports or a musical instrument and do his school work without accomodations. NOTHING.

I know them personally. And all of her teachers and have for years.

Exactly what happened this year. First they worked with the guidance office to schedule something in the morning that would be easy to do this with and then they just talked to the teacher and since the principal was already aware it was no problem

You don't understand the IEP process. Once a meeting is requested, it can take months before it's put in place. First, the district has X number of days to schedule the eval. Then the person doing the eval has Y number of days to do the eval. Then that person has Z number of days to get the report. Then the district has A number of days to schedule the meeting...

If teacher A wants to allow the accommodation without an IEP, but teacher A is absent on a test day so the sub won't allow it, what happens to the student?

Like I said in a previous post, if it's not in the IEP, no accommodations can be made to any standardized testing.

let me tell ya its isn't the parents who dont want the simple solutions... do you really think we like these meetings for stupid crap? when my dd first went to school they called me becuase of her speech.. now she's been in therepy for it for awhile.. I told them yes she was in it outside of school well that wasn't good enough for them.. their dr's had to do their own report before they'd do anything with her inside of school... why? why isn't my dr's report good enough...

I would hope that the teachers would not share this type of personal information with you because if they did, they would be breaking the law unless of course, they are your own children.

I'm sure you do it is what every parent wants for their child but I don't understand what this has to do with this. If you thought I meant you personally I was actually referring to the OP. There is a very simple solution to the problem that could end the problem tomorrow but the OP is more concerned with being right and getting everything she should than with simply solving the problem.

Send in the lap top, problem solved.

I guess you chose not to see I know them personally. Who said anything about teachers.

I would say send in the laptop until the school provides one for him... yes..

:confused3

Were are you getting that a meeting costs thousands and thousands of dollars?

I'm said this before but I'll say it again because you haven't addressed it, why can't the school allow him to use a computer that is already there?

Maybe they don't have IEP's I have no idea but from my experience most students that do, don't openly share that information.

I told how all those examples could be handled. Getting it stolen is not a legitimate excuse for not taking it to school. College kids take them regularly to much less controlled environments than high school.

You are trying to compare students with a disability to her son who the OP stated has uncontrolled ADD. Keeping up with something like a laptop can be very difficult for people with ADD.

agree with that also.

Accommodation is being allowed to use the laptop, being allowed to carry and keep a back pack with them during the day if it normally isn't allowed.

Somewhere the word REASONABLE has been lost in the reasonable accommodation part in all this entitlement mentality.

And you don't seem to understand that reasonable does not have the same meaning for kids with a disability. As I said, maybe keeping up with a laptop sounds reasonable to you because it is easy for you. For a student with ADD, it is not easy and not necessarioy reasonable.
