We were blessed to be given a gallon of milk from the local market that had a "sell by" date of February 12. It hasn't been opened yet. (We got it on Saturday but still had some milk to use up on hand first.) I don't want it to go to waste. I'm told it is still good at least 5-7 days past the "sell by" date. Unfortunately, DH and I aren't drinking milk right now (diets) and 2 of our kids are sick and not eating or drinking much of anything... normally it wouldn't be hard to get rid of a gallon of milk in this house! Any ideas on how to use it up??? I was thinking maybe I could do up some casseroles for the freezer or ???? I have no idea what to do to use up this milk quickly! :confused3

You said you were on a diet but my vote would be for Homemade Ice Cream!!
Or maybe some cream based sauce or soup I would just google and see what comes up

Don't freeze it.

Do you guys eat oatmeal, or any other hot cereal (cream of wheat, cream of rice, grits?) I'd make a huge batch and freeze THAT in individual portions, or just keep in the fridge. Might be a good thing for the sick kids to eat.

Pudding.

Hot chocolate.

Macaroni and cheese (can freeze that).

You absolutely can freeze it. I do it all the time. I just freeze it right in the container. It is recommended that you empty out about 1/2 - 1 cup to allow for expansion(I don't even bother with that). When it is time to defrost, I just put it in the fridge. Or I will fill the sink with cold water and allow the milk to sit in that for a little while. Seems to defrost quicker this way.

I'd freeze it until you can think of something to do with it.

I love rice pudding and tapioca pudding...uses several cups of milk. Also, au gratin or scalloped potatoes. yum

Make an icebox cake! They are so delicious!

You need 4 family size boxes of Cook & Serve Jello Pudding - Chocolate
2 boxes of graham crackers.
Cook the pudding according to package. Once done, take a 9x13 tray (or any kind) and put a layer of graham crackers in bottom. Then put a layer of the pudding (don't be skimpy on it!) and then a layer of graham crackers and pudding until the last layer of pudding is on top (I normally do 4-5 layers)
Then put in the fridge overnight and eat the next day with cool whip! It makes the graham crackers soft like cake and sooooo delicious (and will use atleast half or more of your gallon of milk!)

Soups
Custards
Ice Cream
Sauces: Alfredo, simple White Sauce

Casseroles dont use that much milk, but they freeze.

I freeze shredded Cheese, but have never tried to freeze milk. Time to google!

Freeze it! I freeze mine in the original container. I have heard that you should empty some out because it expands, but honestly I've never done it. I pull it out of the freezer when we get down to a half a gallon of milk and let it thaw. Just put it in the fridge to thaw a few days before you'll need it. We do this all the time. I love knowing that I always have an extra gallon of milk.

You could try freezing it in ice cube trays, too, and pop the cubes out and put them in a freezer bag to use as you need a little milk here....a little milk there.

I was about to suggest this, good thing I read all the way through first ;)
It's so nice that someone else has heard of icebox cake, when I bring it up, people usually look at me like I'm nuts.

OP, by the time you've let the cake set, hopefully your kids will feel better enough to have it as a treat or dessert. :thumbsup2

This sounds super yummy and cheap too!! :thumbsup2

Such great and YUMMY ideas, everyone!! I knew I could count on you guys! :thumbsup2 I'll let you know exactly what I decide to do... gotta hit the store at some point this evening. I knew about the possibility of freezing the milk but wasn't sure and have never tried it myself. I have heard to freeze it and use it in recipes, not to drink, cereal, etc... I like the idea of freezing it in ice cubes! :thumbsup2 And I've never heard of icebox cake... sounds yummy!! :goodvibes

Icebox cake sounds TOO good!! I am imagining all different possibilities, chocolate and vanilla layers, butterscotch and vanilla, lemon pie filling and vanilla. This sounds SO good!!!

I never have enough room in my freezer to put a gallon of milk. If we had a gallon of milk to use I would use some to make mac and cheese, or pudding, or a batch of paneer (indian cottage cheese).
