Ideas to make Value Resort beds more comfy?

Last year, while at the POP Century, I found myself waking up with the worst back pain....which has never been a problem for me. You would think that as late as we get back to the resorts and as tired as we were, we'd sleep straight through on any mattress.

Anyhow....at home we have a Serta memory foam topper. I realize I can't really travel with something that bulky....but does anyone take anything that helps with the mattress? Maybe we should start sleeping on the floor a month or two before our travel dates so we can build up a tolerance LOL

If you're bed is uncomfortable ask to be moved to a different room. They aren't all that way :confused3 tylenol helps too.

They replaced all the mattresses a year or two ago.....so wouldn't they all be the same? I don't think Tylenol would help....I'm talking, waking up and not being able to move for a minute or two because your back is in this paralyzing pain. My husband has always had back issues....and he says the resort beds have always been uncomfortable but that last years was much worse. You would think the new mattresses would be an upgrade.....and not make things worse :(

My suggestion, which may not be helpful, is to upgrade to CSR. ;) CSR has the most comfortable beds of any resort we have tried at WDW - better than Poly, Beach Club, OKW and AKL. (Our Boardwalk bed was very comfy, though.)

I have read posts where people have requested mattress toppers, but that might have been at the DVC resorts (for the pullouts), and I did read that they are in short supply. Is it worth shipping the foam topper to the resort, then shipping it home? Could you squish it into a box for shipping?

I can't think of anything but the memory foam. You might want to take an air mattress.

As much as I love pop I hate the new beds. They are super super firm. We are going with CSR this year. I know I will miss pop but I know I won't miss the beds. That is my only negative I have about pop. I'm glad I didn't imagine the beds were hard. At first I thought I hurt my back I'm 37 but pretty fit and have never had back issues. I got home and my bed felt so nice and my back felt better in a couple of days. At home my bed is nothing special just a regular pillow top.

You might want to try bringing your own pillow. I use memory foam pillow at home and I find the value resort pillows flimsy and difficult for side-sleeping. If I don't use a firm enough pillow or my memory foam one, I get back/neck aches. It's easier than bringing something big enough to cover the whole mattress!

There is a memory foam topper that is packaged very small when you first get it . It is heavey though. I would have it sent to the resort. I think cost could be 60-100 dollars but for a good night sleep it would so be worth it. Maybe give to another family coming in -- or even half the cost. I used one at home for the longest time on top of our NEW matress pillow top even. I have to say I have one in our condo in Hawaii, our motor home, and on every bed at home. I never sleep any where with out it.

Its terrible to have that kind of pain. Seriously, the mattresses are not all exactly the same. And tylenol pm or aleve will help with the pain. My DH and I both have back problems. When we cabin camp we bring an air mattress to put on top of the bed sometimes, but I wouldn't expect to have to do that at any Disney hotel, including Pop. The mattresses we've had at Pop have been fine in the past. Sorry you're dreading it.

Thanks everyone :) Our memory foam was really small when it arrived too.....and then it explodes when you open the box LOL I thought about buying those space bags and shoving a memory foam in them then sucking the air out of it....but doing it to get it back home wouldn't work.

I may try taking a memory foam pillow, that may make the difference. I usually sleep with a firmer feather pillow at home....although my husband uses the memory foam ones. Maybe even if we stopped by the Target on the way in to Disney and grabbed one of those cheap egg crate foam toppers it would help.

I would upgrade to CSR but with 4 kids it's just not in our budget....or we'd have to shorten our trip to make the budget work and really that would make me feel worse than the back pain LOL

Thanks again for the ideas.....:)

I have had multi back surgeries. I LOVE Pop's beds. I have both lumbar & cervical issues. Maybe I have been lucky each time.

Yea, we've never had an issue until last year. I usually sleep like a BRICK on them :) Last year was the first year I'd ever woke up with the spasm type pain...it was horrible. We're thinking of taking a thin foam topper with us, or picking one up at the Target after the first day or two if our back gives us trouble. :)

I can totally see what you mean. I love a firm mattress  and I don't sleep well on pillow top/memory foam, but I can imagine if you don't that the Pop beds might be uncomfortable. Then again it may have been just a fluke. I'd ask to move if I couldn't bear it and if that still didn't work, maybe try to get offsite and buy even an "egg crate" topper.

Ok, not sure if this would work :confused3 ask Front Desk if you can have a few spare bedspreads &/or blankets. Fold those and layer them on top of the mattress (under the sheet) and it will act as extra padding. I did this at home whilst I was waiting for my topper to be delivered, worked well :)

I always vote for more time. :thumbsup2. Next year we may be back to pop since we are thinking of going for 14 days.

It could be more than just the mattress. It could be the size of the mattress, very few of us sleep on full size.

Also it could be muscle strain from walking and standing, the rides, heat depending on when you go and stress. As much as we all love going, it can be stressful, for one thing sharing a room and bathroom can be stressful.

Yea.....it could be any number of things I suppose. It was just strange that we've never had that happen before the mattress changes. We sleep on a queen size, but we've slept on full at other hotels. I'm in good shape, I exercise every day and I'm on my feet a lot during the day as well....so I don't think that's it.

Sadly the bathroom sharing isn't a stressful thing for us either. With 5 kids and 2 bathrooms at home, we share a LOT.....bathrooms, personal space.....LOL Who knows though, maybe it was just the relaxation of being on a vacation....at home it's go go go and I spend so long planning the vacation that when we get there and drive thru the Pop gates it's a huge SIGH of relief. So maybe I'm tense the other 51 weeks of the year and vacation brought out the worst in my back.

Hopefully it was just one episode....but we'll be prepared just in case it happens again. Nothing worse than being paralyzed in pain when you're needing to get up and get to an early morning ADR LOL

Thanks again for your replies....no matter what pain I endure, I'm so ready to get on the road and get to Disney. I hope the next few months fly by!

We have a memory foam mattress we travel with that fits well into one suit case with our pillows. I also take my own blanket. Just for these situations. Yes, it means we have a couple extra suit cases, but I have to be comfortable at night. ;) Sometimes we need it, sometimes we don't. We are staying at SoG in September and I can't remember if the beds are too firm or not, so it's going with us. lol

We stayed at Pop back in 09 while I was pregnant with my youngest, and I had the same issue, even though we had the old mattresses. I'd hope they had gotten better we the refurb, but it sounds like they are even worse now. Hard to believe!

If I were going to stay there again, I'd pick up some type of topper for sure. Last time, I lined up a bunch of pillows and slept on those. It wasn't great, but better than the mattress!

We're planning to stay at ASMo this time, and I'm wondering if they are just as bad there.
