I posted this question on the community board but thought it might do better here. I am in need of a new computer, but not a desktop. But I need a good processor. I was thinking about a good dell or Toshiba. I need to download Microsoft window for excel for our bus. So I will take any suggestions. I would appreciate it.

Toshiba and Dell do not make processors and their computers are built with a variety of different brands/types. If you're concerned about processor speed, you may find this link helpful:

You mentioned you use Excel, are you also a gamer? Unless you are crunching some serious numbers and formulas, average excel use will not require a high-end processor.

Dell is always good. We have been bery pleased with our HP & Gateway laptops.
The key is 3G+ RAM plus a 500GB+ hard drive.
Staples had a great deal right an HP w/ 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive for only $399.

We're in the process of looking for a new laptop right now, and it's a fascinating thing. My brother whose job is computers said to buy anything except a Dell, which I have heard from many other people. However, some people are happy with Dell. I've heard too much negative, so we're avoiding them.

Also it's interesting to note that the actual manufacturers of motherboards are not the names that most people are familiar with, such as HP, Dell, etc. Those are companies that assemble pretty computers.

I'm looking at Asus, because they are one of the few primary manufacturers of most of the computer parts, so my instinct tells me they will work better - they can't blame a third company for a failed product, as it's their own product. The thing is they're not necessarily as pretty or well known as an HP etc. Because of that (and the fact they're cutting out a middle man who is building the computer) their prices tend to be better than a more well known brand. You get more bang for the buck.

JMO, of course. Everyone has different experiences!

ASUS is a fine brand. I also like HP and Lenovo. If you want to splurge a bit Lenovo has there best sale ever today. Today can pick up a T410 for the 750.00 range.

For the others you should be able to get a HP for 600-700 range.

websites gotapex and laptopmag (Look in the deals section)

If you are going to spend this much you should ebable to get an i3 or i5 processor which will insure you are getting a current computer.

The lenove Idea pad is nice and I have seen it in the 500's with an i3 processor.

It's funny you mentioned lenovo - that's what my brother had recommended. I think I have our purchase narrowed down to:

Eenie, meenie, miney, moe....

right now is the best time to get PC's too. They are very very cheap around this time of the year.

We had a Toshiba laptop for a couple of years and absolutely hated it! It crashed all the time, it was SO slow (despite the fact that it was top of the line everything!) and I had to take it in for warranty work twice, and neither time the problem was fixed. When our warranty ran out, we continued having even more problems. I took it to the geek squad to fix it and they weren't even able to do anything with it. I reformated the stupid thing like 10 times. I ended up getting so frustrated with it that one morning, when I went to go turn it on after spending 3 hours the day before reformating it once again, and dealing with setting up the computer again, the computer started to act up again. I calmly picked it up, went to my second floor balcony, and threw it into my rock garden. I then had to call my husband and explain why I needed to go to the Apple store to buy a Mac.

Lets just say, we've now had our Mac for 2 years and I have YET to have a problem, and I haven't done anything different. I will never go back to a PC.

I wish we could go Mac, but it's not even remotely in the same neighborhood as our budget.... not even the same voting district..... same geographical, well, you get the idea :)

If you want less crashes, viruses, and hassles: GO MAC! :thumbsup2

YMMV. My Mac has crashed more times in the past 2 years than any PC I ever owned. More crashes = more hassles.

Thank you everyone for your input. We are also going to see what ads look like tomorrow.
