What a beautiful/meaningful/emotional story - thanks for sharing!
In my opinion you would be best off thinking about other doors in your life - Who walked through that door that you remember?
What did that door shield you from growing up?
Were you an 'open door' kind of kid - or were you the type of kid that escaped from the world behind that door?
Who knocked on that door?
Did you ever slam the door?
Did you have a lock on your bedroom door?
Fast forward to to day....
What other 'doors' have you walked through in your life?
What experiences have served as 'doors' in your life?
Where are your doors today?
What doors have you knocked on?
What accomplishments came from stepping out of the 'door' of your comfort zone?
While you don't want to change the appearance of the door, you can always leave one side of the door unchanged, and completely customize the other side!
Have you heard that song "The House that Built Me"?
If you haven't - spend $1 and buy it on iTunes, and while its downloading - go grab a box of tissues. You'll need more than one - I know I did the first time I heard it!
When my parents sold our family home (I totally supported them in doing so -.... it has since been razed) I bought my Mom a ceramic vase with the saying "Home Is Where Your Mom Is" printed on it. When Mom passed away this past May, seeing that vase in her window sill in the kitchen brought back a flood of memories of why I bought it for her, and made me think about what 'home' really meant. That definition changes a lot as life progresses.
That door must have a lot of meaning to you, but don't be afraid to change what it means to you by making it not only a door from your past, but also a door to your future.
I could go on with a lot more metaphors, but I'll spare you - I become unhinged easily in regard to word/situational humor! HAHA
