I am wanting to get a couple of things in our room before the kids get there, but dh and I are having trouble trying to figure out how to get that done with them around. Would the hotel do it for us?

Also wondering the same. My parents are going with us and celebrating their 45 the anniversary. So we would like to sneak something in their room.

Kids are easy....Hey guys, lets go check out the pool while mom (or dad) finds our room. Of course you will either need to be driving and have your luggage with you, or have things in your carry-on from the plane as luggage from DME can take a while. Another way is to wait till you are returning from the park or dinner for the first time and have mom or dad stop by the gift shop with the kids to check something out or pick up something and mom or dad head on to the room and lay out items you had hid in your luggage. Another idea is for it to appear that first night and they can find it when they wake up that first morning!

The first surprise needs to be in the room for the first time they walk in. I thought about one of us running ahead to the room, but I'm wondering if my 8yr old will notice and say something.

You/DH could run ahead while everyone else stops for a drink/snack at the food court (not sure where you are staying?). Excuse yourself to the bathroom and sprint to the room. Could also do the same with a look around the gift shop, pool, long-way around walk to the room, etc. Are you driving - pretend to have left something in the car.

We are staying at all star music. I believe the food court will be closed at the time we're going.
We are driving.
How far is the gift shop and arcade from where we check in?

It's very close, all the in building. The check-in counters are first, then a bathroom, then the store/arcade - but you can see straight through one end to the other (if that makes sense?), not a long walking distance at all. I think the arcade space will be used for to-go food and drinks, too.

Hmm, we could possibly stretch our legs while dad checks in and check some things out and he can run to the rooms and then come back and pick is up like he never left.

Definitely! There's is also a little area with Disney movies/cartoons playing in the lobby that might distract for a few minutes. The pool is also right outside, behind the building, so you could walk around and check that out, too - while DH is "in line."

My DS loves watching those cartoons in the lobby! Seems like they are the same ones every time but they are the first thing he looks for when we walk in... Or any time we pass through. Nevermind the African artwork or the chandeliers!

Disney will do it for you, I think it's pretty expensive, especially knowing you could do it yourself for a lot less, but value is relative depending on what you want for your family. ;)

Just to add- check-in usually takes a little while (at least it always has for us) and by the time we get to the resort after traveling DD is ready to stretch her legs and doesn't want to wait in the line. There's lots to explore in the lobby and nearby areas. So I think your plan of letting your husband check-in then run to the room quick will work fine.
