other than burgers for grilling lunch and dinners! I can also take a Breville Grill (like a giant George Forman and a Crockpot, if needed).

Thanks!

Ribs, steak, chicken, basically any meat can be grilled.

If you are tenting and bringing a coleman type of propane stove you can cook big pot dishes of speghetti. We have a two pot dish of cowboy speghetti that has a base flavor of diced bacon and garlic. The minimum amout of meat is not missed. Very few ingredients. WE've also used a crockpot to make some other pasta dishes and stews and soups.

We find that when we camp, even with a full kitchen in our Travel trailer, its alot easier just to cook outside and not make a mess inside.

From my Boy Scout days; Hobo Stew... Take a decent size piece of reynolds wrap, cut up single size portion of potato, carrots, and any other vegetable you like, add in some chunks of meat, and season to your liking. Take each one you've made, sticke them in the fire or on top of the coals in this case and let cook till done. If you season it well, it is really really good and comes out juicy and soft.

Bring a couple of dutch ovens and find some recipes. It allows you to do something that most people don't get to do at home. My FIL is planning on doing a turkey in one this year while we are at FW. But I'm still bringing my fryer.

I'm with you. We've had our camper for 3yrs and have yet to cook inside.

I used to have some excellent recipes for peacock, but alas, I have hunted them to extinction at FW. :sad2:

I do a lot of precooking before we camp. These are some of the old standbys that are always on the camping menu (and I'll omit the ones I actually use the oven in the motorhome for).

Pulled pork BBQ (made ahead in the crock pot)
Spaghetti w/ meat sauce
Tacos (seasoned meat made ahead)
Burgers and dogs
Grilled chicken breast over hearty salad
Chili (cooler weather)
Pot roast or Stew in the crock pot (cooler weather)
Meatballs and sauce in the crock pot for meatball subs

If we camp longer than 5 or so days, we usually have at least one steak night and two "burger and dog" nights.

I also have a great recipe for "easy cheesey potatoes"... a great make ahead side dish that we eat with more than one meal.

mmmm I love planning the meals, making the lists, grocery shopping for the trip and doing the actual camp cooking. :stir:

Have fun!

I'm glad someone asked this question because I was wondering about it myself. The recipes sound good!

A couple more questions I wanted to ask though. Do you use coolers & just get ice from the comfort stations to refill them?

And I know this is going to be a really dumb question but DH wanted me to ask it: what exactly do you all do to wash everything afterwards? I told him I'm sure most people would get a plastic tub & handwash it all but he's concerned about throwing soapy water out onto the trees. I don't know why he's so concerned about it. :confused3 :rotfl:

We wanted to get a couple camping trips of just sleeping under our belts before we started getting into the cooking thing. I think we're ready now though!

I am actually looking for some meals that can make from canned food. Our trip is going to be 2 weeks long from the time we leave until we get home, and I don't think I can fit 2 weeks worth of meat in my freezer. :stir:

I have never prepared ahead but it might be a good idea this time to cook up some hamburger and keep it in the frig. :hourglass

I have a nice big pantry that can hold a couple of weeks worth of food. I hate the thoughts of wasting my Disney time at a grocery store! :rolleyes1

I thought I could bring canned chicken to use in a Enchilada kit. I don't want prepared things for every meal but we plan on eating all but one meal at the camper. :lovestruc

Anybody have any suggestions? :listen:

Thank You!

OK, you talked me into sharing it. Here's the best recipe I ever got from my MIL! We call it "Chunky Beef & Rice," and you wouldn't believe the number of compliments I've gotten on this...it's almost embarrasing!

Buy one can of Chunky Soup "Beef with Country Vegetables" for each 2-3 people you plan to feed. Make a bunch of Minute rice. (Maybe a cup or so of dry rice per 2-3 people). Heat Soup. Serve over rice. You're Done!

You can adjust quantities based on who you're feeding and if they've eaten lately (i.e. some kids will only eat the rice, sometimes my dh will eat a whole batch by himself!).

I don't even feel guilty about serving this! It includes meat and vegetables, is filling and is a snap to clean up. I've made this camping a zillion times. If you want to be more gourmet about it, tear open a bag of baby carrots to serve with it or slice up an English cucumber and serve some brownies from home for dessert. If it's really hot out, just serve it sort of luke-warm. Works for us!

...a few other "easy" ideas: chili cheese hot dogs with canned chili, hot dogs & beans (with canned beans, of course), Chef Boy-R-Dee type mini-ravioli's, Pasta Roni Fettucini Alfredo with canned chicken...I love my pup's kitchen, and use it all the time! My kids love those cereals in little boxes for breakfast, and I love bagels and cream cheese. Mmmm, easy camping meals! But, my ultra-favorite is still "Honey, could you cook these steaks!"

Brianne, I am not the expert on this, but if your husband is right about dumping the soapy water! What do others do when tent camping in a partial hookup site?

We saw some tent campers with a screen tent that they used to store coolers and such.

Beware of the squirrels!!! Keep all of your food safe and secure!!! We tent camp at FW - big tent and a screen tent - this past June I left a jar of peanut butter on the picnic table under the screen tent. We came back after spending all day in the parks and I saw the jar of PB under the table. I picked it up only to notice that the lid was missing and half the jar was eaten! I found the lid under a tree, the top had been chewed through and they must have figured out how to unscrew it in the process!!! I have a picture of the lid, but I can't figure out how to post it! Darn squirrels!

We usually do the anything you can throw on the grill route. One night we do the take out pizza from Trails End, and I found a Publix food store out on Sand Lake Drive - you can get some really good prepared food, and it's less expensive than the trading posts!

One tip I've learned that might help is precook ground beef and then use it in recipes, etc. Just pull a package out of the freezer...

Ft. Wilderness advises you to find the closest empty full hookup site and dump your wash water in the sewer there. That is usually possible in Loop 1500, but difficult in loop 2000. There is a large sink in the laundry room in each loop, also perhaps just dump it in a toilet in the comfort station??

I'm not really sure, as I don't cook at Ft. Wilderness.

We've done quite a bit of tent camping, but never at Fort Wilderness. I just bought a coleman folding double wash basin. It looks great, as opposed to washing dishes in my largest pot. We usually just take the water to the nearest comfort station and dispose of it there. We don't do alot of major cooking though. We usually do instant oatmeal for breakfast, or a cereal bar, then sandwiches for lunch, and maybe grill something for dinner. On our trip this time, we can just take enough in the cooler for 3 days, then we have to make a trip into Plant City Fl, so we'll pick up the next 4 days cooler items. Hope you have a great trip.

By the way, anyone know when are we going to get a sticky at the top of our forum for camping trip reports?
