My nephew is almost 12, in the sixth grade. I'm at a loss for a good gift idea. He is not into sports. Loves to read, plays his DS3 nearly nonstop. Other than that? I don't want to give him video games. If all else fails, I'll get a Barnes & Noble gift card, but I would really like to give him something off the radar.

Anyone have boys this age and a fabulous idea?

I have two boys, 10 and 13. My youngest just started playing Lacrosse last spring, but doesn't want sporty gifts. They both love the 3DS and XBOX. Both of my kids love to read too. I have a lot of video games for them. They love them, so why not?
Boys that age also tend to love LEGOS and Nerf guns. How about a sled?

Thanks! I'm steering clear of video games because I think he'll be getting quite a few from Mom. Not much snow here, otherwise a sled would have been a great idea! I like the Nerf gun - that's a definite possibility!

My son is turning 12 next month. He wanted a camera or camcorder that records video. He loves to make movies.

If he really loves to read, how about a Kindle? Either the paperwhite, if you want to strictly stick to an e-reader, or the Fire (which that might turn more into another game machine, but would be great for reading too).

Exactly what I was thinking....Kindle.

like to build? My 11yr old is obsessed with duct tape. He is also asking for a backrest to read in bed.

Yes-Duct tape wallets/duct tape pencil holders... Anything he can think of to make ....

20Q handheld game-my son is fascinated by this

outside the box- how about hermit crabs? 10 gallon fish tank, a bit of sand, bowl for water, at least 2 hermit crabs (they like to live in groups)-super easy to take care of! We have had them for years

None of my kids are into sports (they are however Boy Scouts). Nerf Guns are always a hit with them. Middle DS(12) has 3 on his list. He also has an airsoft gun and all the accessories as well as a pocket knife, multi-tool, flashlight, duck tape on his list. Other things he wants include an iphone, ipad, comic books, deck of cards, fleece blanket, hoodies (from Hollister or AE Outfitters), gift cards to Gamestop or Target and iTunes.

My favorite "original" gift for DS13 this year is a root beer making kit. I got it on Amazon.

How about Lego's. Lego has a fairly new section called "architecture". They are all famous buildings from the US and around the world. DS loves building them and we display them prominently as they look great. A side benefit is that he goes on line and researches them as well so is getting some educational value in there as well.

The other thing we are getting is the Ipod Nano. A little expensive, but it is pretty much a music player and not video games.

My son is 11 also in 6th grade. He is getting a Google Nexus tablet, minecraft gift card, minecraft legos, karate lessons/uniform , a rocket kit , a really nice drawing kit and skylanders giants.

My ds11 is getting video games, Legos, a pitching net and baseballs, some mini sports balls, a radio control helicoptor and an iPod touch and iTunes card.

Here is what I'm giving my ds12
Ipod touch & Itunes card
a couple Lego sets
binoculars
Yankee hat
a couple video games
nerf gun and lots of ammo
remote control helicopter
Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction books and all the little things needed to make the stuff.

What can you buy with a minecraft giftcard?

My DS10 and DS13 really liked those remote control helicopters. Other things that come to mind are cameras, camping/fishing stuff, or something really different like a rented guitar and lessons. My boys tend to be very in to other hobbies so that makes it easier to shop for them.

I guess I shouldn't have said gift card..as it really isn't. It's basically an activation card to get full access to the game online. I bought it at Target for $27. He plays the free version but wants the full version, hence the card. I realize I can go online and set up an account for him, but this will give him something to unwrap. I also found him a Minecraft tshirt at JCPennys to go with it.

Sorry for the confusion!

I found James Patterson books about middle school for my 6th grader (like diary of a wimpy kid) I ordered them through barnes & noble. I also got a crystal growing kit.

My 2 younger ones got a kick out of the remote controlled helicopter for sure.
