Ideal Number of Points

How many DVC points are the perfect amount to own?

  • Less than 160 points

  • Exactly 160 points (minimum buy-in)

  • 161 - 200 points

  • 201 - 300 points

  • 301 - 400 points

  • 401 - 500 points

  • 501 - 1000 points

  • More than 1000 points (I have LOTS of friends & family)

I voted for between 200 and 300 and only because that is all I need for the time being so it is "ideal" for me.

But, as my children grow and have their own families, I would like to get to a point where I have between 400 and 500 points available, either by adding on to my own contracts, or purchasing contracts for them (if they want their own).

My "ideal" would be to travel to Disney once a year with enough points to stay at any Grand Villa for at least 7 night almost any time of year.
(except for premium holiday dates)

I figure that let us have several trips a year and anywhere we would want
like a 1br or 2br.
or one huge comfort trip with friends or family.

I put over 1000 because that would be ideal for me! I would love to go down for a 2 bd for 3 weeks every year!

However, what we have currently is 300 AKV points, and 150 VWL points. We are finding that we prefer the 1bds at the very least for VWL, so we will probably try to add on another 75 pts there at some point.

The 300 were originally purchased to take the whole family (11 of us total right now) 1 week every other year, in 2 2bd during magic season. We went with a grand villa for the first time on a splurge. I am not so certain that the family trip is going to work, so we may have 300 pts for ourselves to use and splurge on our friends every year! :)

I don't see how you can get any meaningful answers.

I may vacation at WDW 4 times a year for a total of 25 days and feel that 1000 points would be ideal.

You might only vacation every other year for 5 days total and feel that 100 points would be ideal.

It all depends on many factors. :goodvibes

That's why it says how many points "you" feel is best. I wasn't after any epiphany answers to help make any decisions for myself. Just posed the question.

Sorry... I misunderstood your question. I thought that you were looking for input on how many points you should buy based upon others.

I didn't want you to get the wrong info. :goodvibes

I chose more than 1000 so that we could visit and stay in a 2 bedroom for a week at least once a year and then go on at least a 7 day cruise (4 of us) staying in a balcony room at least once a year. I know that a cruise isn't your best use of points, but I took this questions as if money and time were no object.

I will say that the longer we have DVC the less we need and find ourselves banking more often than when the children were younger in our family group.

As more in the family get jobs, school conflicts etc, it becomes harder and harder to get away at the same time.

We will soon be selling off some of ours and traveling to other destinations that offer great deals and better customer service.

Disney has been great fun but lately there have been so many cutbacks and yet prices continue to rise that we are interested in vacations in other areas.

I stayed in a Hampton Inn in New Orleans recently in a suite with breakfast and free valet parking that put some of the Disney deluxe resorts to shame and it cost me $150 a night.

We will keep just enough to go about every other year or every third year.

I answered 500-1000.

Currently we're in the 660 range and about 50-75 points short on our BWV contract.

My goal is to afford 10 days in the Spring, 10 days in the Fall and 7 days in the winter (December/January) mixing up the use of studios, 1beds and 2beds.

It gets expensive when you want to bump up your room size to take guests or go on weekends.

The plan is to get between 600-700. Started at 210 we are now at 310 and climbing :thumbsup2

I would love to have 1000pts but 800pts would be sufficient. We tend to go twice a year (total of 28 nights/yr) with 14 nights per trip. I am in constant borrowing mode. If I have at least 800pts, I would not need to borrow all the time. Just 300pts to go!:goodvibes

We started out with 230 at OKW and added on 2 more times (125 pts) in 7 months at AKV. Thus, bringing our total to 355. As a result we have be going 3 - 4 times a year sometimes more (10/08 - 10/09 5 trips). Our future plans are to go either Feb or April vacation, sometime in late June/early July and either Oct or Dec. We of course prefer to stay in a 1 bdr, because the seperation from the kids at night is nice. However, with the number of trips and points coupled with the time of year we go this is not always possible. Our plan is to add on in the future most likely at a third resort with an additional 125 to 150 points. These numbers will probably adjust based on point requirements in the future to try and make every trip a 1 bdr.

I would say our goal is to get between 500 and 600 points.

I answered 501-1000. My idea of a perfect year is 6 different weeks at Disney (sort of like DVCMike;)). I get 6 weeks of paid vacation from work every year and can only spend one at Disney currently (I own 150 points). My contract is paid for but I need to pay off other bills before I can give into that monster of addonitis:banana: So for now I spend 5 weeks around the house, dreaming of Disney and 1 week actually LIVING the dream:dance3:

Is this supposed to be how many we HAVE or how many we WISH we had?:rotfl:

The more the better... I mean, who wouldn't want enough points to book a room for the day before arrival just so your room was ready when you arrive at 11 am? Or enough points to book the day after you are leaving so you didn't need to check out by 11 for an evening flight?? Don't worry about weekends, larger accommodations, season, or even booking a studio at BCV solely for the purpose of using SAB... although you never actually use the studio?
Want to book a beach cottage for a romantic getaway for the two of you??

Ideal number of points.... The sky's the limit!!

I posted 501-1000 which is more than we have. That's because I'd really like to be able to take guests. Also, our family (grandchildren) is growing and a 2 bedroom is even going to be too small for us. Ideally, I'd LOVE to have more than 1000, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford it. I hope so, I really, really hope so. I really want to take those grandbabies to Disney World at least once a year. We have teenage sons, too, and we already enjoy going one to two times a year with them. In order to do that, we have to borrow points. Yes, we could use more points with NO problem.

we have 400 points, mostly BWVs, with some BCV & SSR.

we love SSR , but find ourselves yearning for the BWVs while there. and the only thing we really enjoy about the BCVs is their proximity to the BW.

so a minimum of 500 points, all at the BWVs would be perfect for us :cloud9:

We have the 150 that was the minimum when we bought. Its actually a few too many for us now. We only go every other year and are starting to feel like that is too often. We have limited vacation time and the desire to travel places other than Disney.

I voted 201-300; my 210 are perfect for me at the moment as it gives me enough studio time to fit nicely with my current # of vacation days @ work. Would I like more? Of course! But the dues would be hard to cover and still be able to have the $$ for airfare and such to actually use them.

I think the best answer is: As many as you can afford to buy & pay dues on and still use, yourself or to treat others. and that will of course vary for each owner.

I voted 201-300 but then realized that after my VGC add on we have 325. Oops! I now revise my answer...301-400. Any more than that I'd have to retire to have the time to plan and go on that many vacations!

We have 210 now, but we are completely out of points so we're paying cash next month. OBVIOUSLY 210 is not enough.

There are only 3 of us so we fit fine in a studio. I HATE group travel - HATE IT - so I will never have the desire to foot the bill for someone else's villa. But still, 210 is definitely not enough.

Chances are, no matter how many points we had, we wouldn't have "enough". For next year we booked a 1 bedroom, just to see how we like it. I bet we will like it a lot. And I bet after that we will feel smooshed in a studio. But we'll see. DS is almost 14. How much longer can he realistically horn in on all of our trips? ;)
