my gym is having a biggest loser contest. The first place team wins $5000. unless they get more then 20 teams then the amount goes up. 2nd and 3rd place get gym memberships. DH and I have been going to the gym for several months. We have a good deal of weight to lose. We are trying to workout in ways to only lose body fat.
The contest winners are decided on the team who loses the greatest percentage of body fat. It lasts six weeks. We are considering adding our son. He is normally a weight lifter and very active. When he slacks off he puts on fat in his stomach area. He has around 35lbs to lose and because he lifts weights and still has a decent amount of muscle under the gained weight once he gets serious he loses weight pretty quickly and it's pretty much all fat. He's serious about his diet and does things to increase this happening. DH and I are good candidates simply because we have a good deal of fat to lose, I think.
My question is, who would be the ideal two other candidates? What should we be looking for. We really would like to win this. My son's gf would like to join us but I would guess that the most she could lose is 20lbs and it would be very difficult for her to drop much body fat. I don't think she needs to lose any weight but she says her body fat is higher then it usually is. I don't want to hurt her feelings and say no but I'd think that somebody like that on the team will hurt us.

It is dependent on the amount of weight you need to drop and it will be someone who will count calories and eat healthy. If you know that Joe Schmoo is going to flip-flop on his "egg mcmuffins", not a good pick.

You have to take in enough healthy calories to burn off fat while exercising.

I think that is the biggest failure with weight drop. Research the amount of protein you need for your weight. :thumbsup2 There is a reason weight lifters drink protein shakes.

You need the calories to exercise and burn fat. So you need someone disciplined.

The GF will probably lose 10lbs and then gain muscle thru exercising. She would be not the best choice to pick for a "biggest loser" game. Find out her body fat % before you include her. Guessing your body fat is not something you should bank on.

Also if she is out of shape it is probably alot of muscle toning she needs. It may appear to her that she has alot of body fat and it may just be low muscle tone.

What about the son who has 35lbs to lose and will probably lose mostly fat but gain muscle? I don't think muscle gain will matter as it is based on percentage of fat lost.

Guys drop fat in a New York minute and your son is conditioned.

Does the GF exercise?

no the gf doesn't exercise. She used to but now she's just kind of active. She's a nanny and a waitress plus bikes.

It's funny that you mention the eat enough thing. I don't do this and it's really hampering my weight loss. It's hard to comprehend that I have a good deal of weight to lose and don't eat enough but I don't. I had several meetings with a nutritionist where I worked hard to add things I ate but I just don't. Especially now that I go to the gym or jog six days a week it's more important.

I wish I could just get really lazy right now for the next five weeks until this begins. You know, put on fat, etc... But we've been working very hard and won't do that at this point. DS however will not even make an effort until this starts and he will be doing week long visits with each of his aunts in other states where they will spoil their college nephew taking him out for food and drinks.

That is pretty active. I would suspect she has alot of toning to do with 20lbs.
Her body fat will drop however it would be slow. If 6 weeks is your target date, I hate to say it but guys drop weight faster.

If you take in the proper amount of healthy calories you should see a difference. I would spend my time setting yourself up to do that.
Get calorie amounts, a scale, make up recipes and test them. So when you are ready to start you have a plan.

If it is only for 6 weeks you could plan out the entire menu. That would certainly make a huge difference.

This is from the "Biggest Loser" site and it explains it much better.;)

Never skip a cheese stick. After six seasons with the show, nutritionist Cheryl Forberg, R.D., says the two most common mistakes made by nearly all the contestants who've passed through the ranch are skipping meals, particularly breakfast, and not consuming enough calcium. "They feel they don't have time to plan ahead, but skipping meals can lead to grabbing fast food and overeating because you're starving," she says. To keep their metabolism revving high, Biggest Loser contestants are trained to eat five or six times a day -- breakfast, lunch, and dinner, small meals made up of high-water-volume vegetables and fruits, whole grains and lean protein, plus two or three snacks. "Most people don't get enough dairy products in their diet," Forberg says. "Men need 1,000 milligrams of calcium. You can achieve that through three servings of milk, yogurt, and/or cheese a day. We encourage a low-fat cheese stick with a piece of fruit for between-meal snacks."

I just wanted to add that you could invite your son's GF as part of a family bonding deal.

If you all get healthy together that could be something great long term!!!

Good Luck!:yay:

I'm sure that is why she wants to join. We would like to win too though.
