Forgive me if this has recently been asked and answered! I'm wondering what ID, if any, is currently required for children to have to get onto a flight. I thought about looking it up with our airline carrier, but it seems more of a TSA issue rather than a carrier issue. I know they didn't need anything last time we flew, but I wanted to make sure nothing has changed. Does anyone know?

Thanks so much!! :goodvibes

the only time ID may be required is if the child is under 2 and is flying as a lap child or discounted infant fare and that's really airline policy and only if they feel you're not trying to cheat them by passing a 2 1/2 year old as under 2 or whatnot.

the TSA only requires your children's names are not on the no-fly list.

I flew last Sept. for the first time (in 10 yrs) I had their birth certificates but noone asked for them, AND I ended up loosing them :sad2: so now I have to get new ones If I were you I would call your airline and check(or try their website?)

Agree...as long as your flight is strictly in the U.S. you do not need id/passports for children unless they are either getting a child rate or if they are a lap child.

NWA terminal in Detroit security asked to see my 10 yr olds BC and asked him his name and age from it last summer.

I had to show my 3 childrens birth certificates at the security check points at both Detroit and Orlando airports. They asked them each one question, their last name or their first and last name and also who is their mother/father and to piont to them.

Unless it is proving a lap child is under 2 to the airline, the TSA is the governing authority for all other ID issues.

In the past year with our DD 8 and DS 17 we have been thru the following airports: Reno, Portland, Tampa, Las Vegas, Orlando, Atlanta, Albequerque, Manchester & Seattle.

My DD's has been asked her name and that is it. My DS is 6'4" and usually has his ID in hand. Leaving Orlando in January it was buried in his pocket, the TSA asked me how old he was, I stated 17 and he was sent thru without any issues or producing ID.

I think for the older kids 12/14 or so it is a good idea but I have never heard or read of it being required except as listed above.

Being asked how old a child is at an entry gate or restaurant is different than being hassled about your response.
