You don't need ID for a minor child. My kids (15, 12) have flown about 60 times and have never needed ID.

Kids may be asked their names, or they may point at you and ask who you are.... I think it was a random check to see if the child ID'd us and mom and dad.

None on a domestic flight. Int'l requires a passport, of course.
