Somehow I have been able to keep our trip to Iceland a surprise to DS, who is 13. We have had a rough year as a family (my father has been ill and recently passed away - very hard on DS) so we really want to make this trip a big surprise. I was thinking about telling him through somewhat of a scavenger hunt on Easter (maybe putting clues in eggs or something) but I am struggling with ideas for clues/ small items. I don’t want them to be revealing as I want him to think, but also not too hard either. Thought I would see if anyone might have some good ideas and thoughts?

We did this several times when my twin girls were little. With each piece of the puzzle solved there would also be a small prize, getting a little better each time. They had good fun with it and we made each clue progressively harder -took about 4-5 hours to solve. We had about 12 different clues, and it took weeks to plan and plant it. They liked this so much they asked that we do it every year. Unfortunately, it was more time consuming than I had...

For example, one of the first clues, an easy one, was a reference back to something that happened in a Harry Potter book. It made references, but not too specific, and instructed them to read the line following the occurrence in the book. For example, a reference to where Kretcher sleeps. So the next clue would be in the cabinet in the kitchen where the old boiler was....

These ran throughout the house, the yards, and finally they had to dig up a can that had the final piece of the puzzle.

Have fun!

What a great idea. How about a word jumble via scavenger hunt? Set up a scavenger hunt in your house where he has to go find his eggs, and each Easter Egg has a letter in it (out of order) and at the end he has to unscramble the letters? Then his Easter "basket" could be a new dopp kit or something travel related.
