I would like to purchase a Garmin, but I am clueless as to which model I would need. I would like one that calculates my pace and lets me know if I need to go faster or slower. Which model would do that?

Most of the Garmin's will do what you want to do.

I have the Garmin 305 and love it. I bought mine a year and a half ago. If you watch you can get it for about $125.

A friend of mine has the 405, and he likes his as well. He just bought his and I think he paid about $130.

Right now, those 2 are probably the best "budget" choices. They are relatively inexpensive and full featured. They each have their Disadvantages. Some people complain about the size of the 305. It is significantly larger than a standard watch. The up side of that is it has a large screen. With the 405 the touch bezel is a love/hate sort of thing.

Most of the other Garmin are newer and smaller but have a higher price.

There is a real good review of all of the models Here

The one's I would look at are the Garmin 305, 210, and 610. Depending on what you want to spend and the features.

I have the Garmin 305, and it has served me well for a couple years now. A little big, but it is light. I really do not notice it that much. It is accurate (based on races). I have worn it in pouring rain, and it still functioned perfectly.

I think the 210 is kind of like the 305 in functionality. It is based on pushing buttons. More like a sports watch, as opposed to the 305, which will really only be worn when running. The 210 has a nice price. This forum gets 15% off at runningwarehouse.com, and I know they have the 210 and 610.

The 610 has more features. It is also a touch screen, instead of relying on buttons. It has a much steeper price. So the question is whether or not it is worth it for you. Alot of the features may not be necessary, but are probably fun. I am thinking about getting it myself.

Stay away from the 400's. They have that bezzel screen, which is known for being buggy. It often doesn't work when wet (this is a problem if you sweat). I also heard it was not as accurate as the 305.

Stay away from the new Nike GPS watch. I had it and returned it. Did a terrible job with the pace. One second I am under 7:00/mile, the next second I am over 9:00/mile. My pace does not change that dramatically that fast. I heard Nike just upgraded the software to help fix this. I have not heard if they were successful though.

Just my thoughts...

LOVE Garmin. I think if you want to train with HR monitoring then the 305 would be a great one to have. I wore out my 205 over the years and totally loved it. Just got a 310XT and am still learning how to "drive" it. Love the ones with the bigger screens for my old eyes so I don't need glasses to read the pace. Good luck with your choice.

My hubby bought me the 210 for my birthday back in August and I haven't been on an outdoor run without it since! I adore it and am so glad to have it! I was like you in that I mainly wanted something to help me track my pace. I love that it tracks your averge pace for each mile and then alerts you once you've hit the mile mark. I also like that you can program intervals in as well, so that's a really cool feature!!! Lastly, I think the 210 probably has the best price.

Good luck deciding--I don't think you can really go wrong with whatever you choose!:)

I agree with the 210! It is my first garmin and I love it. Very easy, but does what I want including pace and intervals. Not a bad price either!

I have decided I would like the 210. How do I get the discount?

Go to runningwarehouse.com. Add the item to your cart. Then under coupon code type wishraced and hit submit. It will show the 15% off after you do that.

This comes in handy for shoes to. I buy all my shoes there and use the code.

Hope you enjoy the watch.
