I wonder if this would work...

So I was wondering something and I thought I'd throw it out here to see if others thought it was feasible.

DVC members get a nice discount for APs. You can purchase said passes at the Guest Services Windows and still get the AP discount, according to the FAQ on the MS site.

You can also convert a MYW ticket to an annual pass by paying the difference between the two within the 14 day expiration date of the MYW ticket.

Many different brokers sell discounted MYW tickets... UT for example sells one about $30 cheaper for a 5 day pass if you have the right codes vs buying through Disney.

So my question is... if Disney sees these MYW tickets at their face value, since they come from an authorized ticket center and you can upgrade to an AP...

Couldn't you save an additional $30 per person by buying a MYW ticket from a place like UT and then converting it to an AP?

Thoughts on if this would work?

Also, just as an FYI. If anyone is doing the 1 day of service, 1 ticket promotion, according to the FAQ you can convert that to a multiday or AP... so doing that one day of service helps other people and gives you an $85 discount on a MYW or AP.

Yes, people do this.

Cheshire Figment is a CM who works in ticket sales and answers these types of questions on the DIS all the time.

He says when upgrading a discounted ticket (like the MYW you cite), to use it for one day then upgrade it.

Apparently if you upgrade a discounted ticket before using it, WDW will give you credit based on what you paid for the ticket, but if you have used it... it gives you credit for the full retail value.

He has not addressed the day of service tickets yet, but I am sure he will shortly. His thread is here:

Cool. I will have to remember this for the future... plus lets me break up the AP payment. I'm assuming the one day doesn't apply to Single day tickets :-D

Thanks!

I'm also assuming we still get our DVC discount too if we did this.

I could be wrong about this, but...

I am fairly sure that if you have an unused one day ticket last year (lets say to get the buy 4 get 7 promotion) that was worth $75 at the time...

You would have to use that ticket to get the full $80 that its worth today..

You would have to use the ticket and upgrade it within 14 days of each other.

And yes, you should still be able to preserve the DVC discount on top of it all.

You don't have to use it one day then go back the next to upgrade. You can use it to get into a park, walk right up to wherever it is you upgrade, and do it right there, and have the difference "bridged", getting the savings.

And yes I've read him say that you get the DVC discount, bc it's more like it's just THE price for a DVC member; it's not really a discount, at least not with their system of upgrading tickets.

I hope that this is the case. We are planning on traveling from December 18-January 1, but, since the promotion ends on December 15th, we are planning on making a special trip to WDW in July to convert our service tickets to APs with the DVC discount. I'll eagerly be awaiting reports on whether Disney is allowing it. Here's hoping... :goodvibes

This is exactly what we did back in August. Last spring I bought 7 day base passes with my mousesavers discount through undercovertourist.com. When we arrived at WDW in August we went to the Magic Kingdom, used our base passes in the turnstile then headed right to guest services. We were able to pay the difference between disney's going rate for the base passes and our dvc discounted APs!!! It worked out perfectly!!!!

Its in the Day of Service FAQ that the ticket can be upgraded... I don't know the VALUE of it, but I am assuming its face.

If I have mine verified by time I go on my trip, I will let you know.

from the program FAQs:
May I upgrade my free one day ticket to an Annual Pass or multi-day ticket?

Yes, the value of the free ticket may be used toward the renewal of your Annual Pass or Passport as long as you completed your service and received and present your voucher within your applicable renewal period . You are responsible for any additional costs owed and no credits or refunds will be given.

btw, we bought discounted multi-day tix last year, and after using them one day, went to WS EPCOT GS to upgrade to DVC APs.
the CM took the value of the discounted pass and only applied that to our APs. it took quite a bit of convincing (over half an hour) to get her to turn the original, discounted pass to a non-discounted pass without any additional charge, and then to apply the monies.
she said she would do it as a "one time exception" as we were previously informed that it was possible, albeit "incorrectly" :confused3
i do believe cheshirefigment has the correct info, but i wasn't happy to be treated as if we were trying to scam someone at GS....it appears some CMs .(especially WS EPCOT GS, where we've had other probs over the years) are not as well informed as he is.

Sorry you had so much trouble. It appears to be an individual CM issue, though.

This past November, we had no trouble at all upgrading our multi-day, undercover tourist MYW tickets to DVC APs at the International Gateway ticket booth. We entered EPCOT through the main entrance (first use of the tickets) and then immediately walked to the IG entrance to do the upgrade. (We were on our way to pick up a car at the Dolphin). Anyway, it took no time at all and the CM even commented on how little the upgrade was going to cost. I reminded her that the MYW tickets were not free, LOL.

So how does this affect us if we want to buy DDP? Do we have to buy our ticket through Disney, or can we buy discounted tickets, get the DDP, and upgrade the tickets to APs?

We have had APs before, and paid for DDP, but always bought our tickets right from Disney. We are going next July and were planning to buy our APs then. We're also wanting to do DDP.

For DVC points stays, the DDP is seperate from park tickets (DVC'ers can add DDP with out ever buying any park tickets). In your case, I'd imagine you would want MYW tickets not attached to your room key (because you'd be getting a seperate AP card anyway). Now if you are talking TIW discount card, you buy the TIW where/when you get the AP.

which ticket from UT would be the one to get??

we're trying to decide upon UT tickets or AP's.

If we purchase the UT 10day ph +more it's more expensive than the DVC PAP?

Just be very careful to do all your calculations ahead of time. I bought my family 6-day, no expire PH passes right before the price increase last summer. They were about $35 off the gate price before the price increase. I had to calculate their new gate value the day we used them (at the new, higher price) and then apply that to the cost of a DVC AP. My math showed we owed just under $52 total for the upgrade for all three of us.

I used the passes the first day (you have to use them to get them to "convert" to the current gate value) then went to upgrade them. The CM did all his stuff and then said "That will be $218."

Um...no. Not happening. He was so confident about it that I am sure people who hadn't done the math would think "Gee, I thought I was going to save more money than this." But I calmly explained that no, the tickets were X value each, blah blah blah and he redid the transaction, found his error and came up with the correct total. I had my paper with the figures and everything - he was pretty impressed that I'd worked it out to the penny.

Do NOT get one that is more expensive than the AP. You will not receive any overage back - there's no cash back in this transaction. The best strategy is to get whatever pass has the biggest savings off gate price without the gate price going over the cost of an AP.

For instance, if you are getting the DVC PAP, it is $494 before tax or $526 after tax. The UT prices include tax, so the closest with the biggest discount looks like the 7-day PH, with no expiration and with water parks. but check the prices carefully against the current ticket prices before you purchase.

Are you staying at a DVC resort on points? If so, there is no connection between your admission and the DDP, so you can do whatever you want about buying tickets.

do you think you can apply the GAD AND the UT tickets?

We are only going to be at WDW for 3 days before our GAD tickets expire. DH just wants to upgrade the GAD tickets at the park.

I'm wondering if we can purchase the UT tickets and then apply the GAD discount to the upgrade price also??
